  1. I heard rumours they were banned on H&S grounds. Could be wrong though. Not seen one using anything other than low powered air rifles in the last 40 yrs. I used to love the bb caps. I kind of feel that about .22rf. ? Great calibre if you want near total silence in urban environments. Cannot be beaten in that application. Beyond that, I can't really think of a reason I'd reach for one. Very limited range especially on fox sized targets and not very flat ballistics. Overpowered for use in sheds and pens where an air rifle becomes more appropriate, and very high risk of rico
  2. With RF's it's all about placement and distance on quarry such as fox. The official recommendation for .22rf is no more than 50yds although some will use it a little further. The guidance does say a little further is acceptable to expert shots. The onus is on you to remain humane. On .17hmr, I can't comment as don't haven't shot one. Remember though even a head shot can miss vitals if badly taken or affected by wind and can leave an animal badly injured. Care, skill and the ability to take a fast followup should unforseen circumstances intervene are vital. If that doesn't sound like your
  3. Could be they hear the LR hit the ground / target near them which acuses them to spook whereas the noise of the hmr disguises the sound of the bullet impact and just sounds like a far off bang, especially as it's not too noisy comparitevly to start with. Be interesting to see if an unsupressed lr has the same effect in which case there might be some bullet weight influence as well.
  4. I wouldn't know tbh. Any new calibre is a guessing game. The Western has the advantage of being based on the next generation military cartridge and traditionally these have endured much more than other cartridges because of the military association. Early indictaions are it's accurate and delivers considerally more energy and range. It also kicks though. Maybe not the most technical of YT channels, but very impressive groupings right out of the box @ 100yds sighting in: If you want a round almost guaranteed to be around for a long time, then pick one the established
  5. You'll never get a rifle granted on good reason where your good reason is to save having to buy more than 1 rifle. It's specifically not a good reason. The only way to justify a rifle via good reason is to show a specific need for it that cannot be fullfilled by any other rifle you hold. As you hold a .243, thats probably going to be long range large deer beyond what might be humane ith a .243, and if you're claiming that, your land will also need to be large enough and open enough to support the claim. If that's not your intention, then heed the advice above. 6.5 is overkill for anything
  6. You may be right. Guess it depends at what level they are at. Tybosaurus Rex on youtube did quite a few tests on scopes for long range some time ago.
  7. BT call screening / blocking phone (level 3) I highly recommend one anyway. I've not answered a single marketing call in 4 years of having mine, plus CCTV (Hikvision or Dahua) and anti snap locks and handles eg Ultion.
  8. Yeah we don't have that power but you would have thought we could put in a request to their police with evidence and their police would take it down. Most countries co-operate on law and security. Maybe Iceland is more hostile to the UK than I'm aware.
  9. Could shop at Diddly Squat Farm shop and visit Clarkson, assuming the yokels haven't driven him out yet! Jeremy Clarkson attempts to calm angry locals about Diddly Squat farm METRO.CO.UK Clarkson's Farm has already earned quite the reputation. As for Iceland,I'm sure the police must be able to ask the Icelandic Police to take it down and provide the details of the owner / renter / administrator.
  10. PM Deker. He shoots regularly at Bisley. In fact I think he may even be something like range manager or something similar. Needless to say, the range goes out over 1,000yds and maybe a mile I think, so very good chance he knows what the big boys are using.
  11. As Stav says it's not as simple as filling out a form and getting a gun. In the US maybe, in the UK, there is a long list of requirements and severe restrictions. You cannot hold a firearm certificate if you have certain convictions. Some others may restrict your ability to get one. Violence inculding domestic and road rage may also prevent you holding a certificate even if it doesn't involve a conviction. You will have security requirements to jump through which will include installing a gun safe to BS standards in an approved location and possibly an alarm or high security locks o
  12. .223 wouldn't be my 1st thought for long range, probably .22-250 or .204 = flatter and faster with more energy. Also, it depends on what your FEO will allow. You can pick a calibre, any calibre, but whether your FEO will allow it is another matter. Also, note the Firearms Guidelines which generally draw the line @ .243 although they're not rigid and some forces may allow larger calibres for extreme range whilst others won't grant over .223. Best decide which suits you best then talk to your FEO if he will allow it. I have some friends with a Remmington 700 and once they replaced the
  13. They're concerned abut it going into the environment. Not as if the ground has lead in though. ? Also there's studies showing toxicity from lead for cancer as well as brain injury. I've heard copper matrix bullets work better than lead through rifles. Better terminal effect. I too would go .17 H. Very little to choose between the .17 and .22 but the .17 is flatter and faster. Don't know about relaoding the .17 but can't see why it's not possible. Something to loook into if you're looking at keeping ammo cost down. Otherwise, .22 is a good choice as plenty of reloading optio
  14. Looks to be about right judging from just cartridges. Cartridges have become expensive. About 10 yrs ago I was paying £196 for 1,000 12g and that was from a dealer not direct. Cost today between £350-400 for the big brands so doubled.
  15. Blackpowder is not technically an explosive although firearms regard it as such because you can get an explosion if confined. There's a lot of controversy over this on the internet. A true explosive explodes if triggered. eg. Hit nitro glycerine with a hammer (not recommended if you have any!) It explodes on contact and depending on the amount may cause injury. TNT explodes when a smaller explosion causes a similar reaction in the TNT (kind of like a BIG hammer). If you light black power (trigger it) outside of any containment it simply burns. Black powder therefore is not technically an
  16. Same with black powder then. That's exactly the same. It's not an explosive. It just produces large volumes of gas very quickly when it burns and if confined can cause containtors to burst explosively. Not sure what all the fuss is about. As you say it's better in the open in a container with low pressure resitance such as a tin with a press on lid. That way if the worst happens, it simply pops the lid off. I'm guessing most won't choose a tin as it's not airtight, but a thin flexible walled plastic bottle should offer the least resistance and be the safest if it bursts.
  17. Who'd have thought they'd have come with Ostritch legs: Wonder if they're extra like the camo?
  18. Yeah but when you dribble on your shoes at your age it all goes through the holes. Now wonder hospitals banned them. Who wants their doctor smelling like the old lady on the next ward. ..and no wonder pigeons are keeping away.
  19. I like the bottom rifle. Reminds me of an AI.
  20. Stick to your gun as they Say Stav. If you like it, you like it.
  21. Spent and misfired shotgun cartridge disposal - The British Association for Shooting and Conservation BASC.ORG.UK Spent and Misfired Cartridge Disposal What sort of waste are spent shotgun cartridges? According to guidance from the Environment Agency (EA), spent... Should have called the FLO to arrange collection for live ones. I'm not sure any licensing offence has been committed as there's no safekeeping for shotgun shells. However the FEO might be able to use careless disposal of cartridges as a reason for denying a renewal as showing an overall disreg
  22. Yeah I don't knoew the cirucmstances, like I said no news apart from headlines in papers.
  23. Yeah that's pretty bad, I don't have news so don't have access to the details.
