  1. i would be going up there now ! why wait ? especially when you think you know your ferret could be there.
  2. leave a live trap or a couple around your garden & maybe one in the front garden, depending on your set-up. personally i wouldnt leave any meat or food in there as it will only attract other unwanted creatures to set it off. place some of your ferrets bedding inside & cross your fingers. but i would get on it straight away as time is short.
  3. olliedakennard... pm me your address & ill send you 10 6oz purse nets with pegs. that will get you started. richie
  4. £300 / £350 in decent condition. i have the same gun.
  5. i take it you have your work cut out aswell ? whats the situation ?
  6. i had a phone call from a bloke on the phone saying he was having major problems with moles, the garden that im working is approx 2 acres that is surrounded by 12 acres of paddocks / rough land. i was taught to trap a while back but never had any reason to put it into practice, this was the perfect opportunity. i arranged a visit to see for myself, i must of counted over 120 mole hills in the gardens & the paddocks. he explained that he had been using a local company to visit regulary & they had been gassing them & said he saw no real difference in the damage been caused.
  7. part and parcel of what richie??? global warming?? weve been ferreting for over 30 years and used to reckon on never seeing a milky doe from september to april. part & parcel of ferreting... reading your first post, by saying "you were mortified to find several litters of babies " the impression i got that you were upset ? thats why i replied by saying part & parcel. a lot of ferreters decide to stop when they see young. i personally dont see any difference in dispatching a youngen or an adult. all the farmers i do rabbit control for expect me to remove as many rabbits
  8. i saw a youngen running back into cover this sunday. also when i was gutting a few rabbits a couple of weeks back, 3 of them were carrying, its part & parcel.
  9. spoke to the farmer that evening. he says its a well known badger set that gets occupied every now & again. on 3 of the entrances there was fresh bedding that had been dragged down.. ive got one of those game cameras on order from the states so ill be plotting that up soon.
  10. yep, 5 amongst a rabbit warren with over 70 holes.
  11. two of my main working ferrets, a hob & jill will always stay down untill either everything has bolted or they have killed whats under. i know if i enter them & they keep appearing & showing no signs of interest there is nothing down there & move onto the next set.. they may be other reasons why there not boltng, people making noise above ground, your scent blowing down their warrens or not entering enough ferrets down to get at them so they just end up giving the ferrets the run around. most times if a rabbit hears movement above ground they will rather face the f
  12. did Ghandi wear flip flops ? i went to an area this weekend to ferret & came across an active badger set right next to a warren & stayed well clear ! a job for the rimmy.
  13. all year round for me, it doesnt bother me when i get youngens, a rabbit is a rabbit !.. just have to work the areas that aint too covered, plus ill be taking the rimmy out more often in the coming months. ill have to get the snares out aswell.
  14. i take it you dont know the shooting seasons start & end dates for different quarry ? pheasant: Oct 1st - Feb 1st
  15. like said earlier, albinos are easier to see, especially in heavy cover.
  16. cheers pat, she done well. well chuffed with her ! they all worked well together.. ive decided to cut my 25 yarder down to make 4 equal size nets so they can be placed between hedges & going to try to getting round too putting them poles on my other 100yrd`er.
  17. where can you buy them ? my ferrets can disguise themselves to sneak amongst the rabbits !
  18. had an invite out today to help out with a few hedge rows. started off with netting up the first hedge row in two sections. within the first 5 minutes we had a couple in the bag with one of them bouncing off my longnet & getting tangled on the 3rd bounce, my fault not having enough bag in the section! worked our way down the line & ended up with 8 in total from that hedge row. moved on to the next section, a hedge row & a few open sets. threw the longnets round & entered all 7 ferrets. once again within the first few minutes they were bolting & one lucky one slipp
  19. well done. cant beat seeing a rabbit bolting straight into a longnet... good shots aswell.
  20. nice going andy... good to get out.
  21. the ground, is it covered im brambles or is the ground clear with fallen leaves covering the entrances ? depending how much you want to work at clearing the warrens & is it for a bit of sport or to keep the land owner satisfied will depend on how much preperation you will have to do. quite often i visit a section the week before i ferret it to clear all the under growth. i sometimes take the petrol hedge cutters there & spend a few hours or more cutting brambles away & other times i just need to spend time raking away fallen leaves out the way so i can see the entrances, b
  22. having fresh droppings at all entrances doesnt always mean the warrens are heavily occupied. depending on what equipment you have, you could always make a few visits at night & quickly scan the area with a lamp or nv unit. not that i make a habit of it each time but when i want to monitor a set after ferreting it i back fill every hole & to keep regular checks to see just how active the set is, then when i return i send the ferrets down the open holes, then when finished i back fill again.. you say it took 6 hours to do a few sets, did you place nets at every hole ?
  23. a couple of us made an offer that had permission under an hour away from you... i take it that is too far for you to travel ? are you looking for someone more local to you ? you should put on your post how far youre willing to travel as it will help more.... richie
  24. i work mine all year round. if i come across a section that is overgrown i get the petrol hedge cutter out the week before & clear as much as possible. the majority of farmers who i control for wouldnt be too happy if they didnt see me there all year round.. when it comes to burrows that are impossible to get to i get the rimmy out with the nv & make a night of it..
