  1. I don't see why you've used hounds and a staffie to compare. What you have mentioned are 2 breeds which i would say need less training than a working gundog. Yes there will be certain aspects of a hound that needs to be trained but when it's working it's on it's own with the pack and thinking for itself. Majority of staffies nowadays are pets and only training they need is to stop licking you and keep of the couch. Of the three breeds you have mentioned the gundog is the one mostly suited to working alongside there owner. They must listen to commands, watch and do as they are trained too do.
  2. agreed socks but he loves it, trouble is he has bigger teeth than me and goes for me nose!! I will start therapy soon
  3. Everyone has their own form of training what works for me won't work for some, I love training my dog and he loves learning, we spend a lot of time rolling on the floor playing with me trying to bite him all in play and when he brings that retrieve back to me his tail is going because he wants to please and when I make a fuss of him he loves it, so when I'm annoyed because training isn't quite right he knows it. But there is no ear pulling or hitting needed, it's understanding his abilities

  5. ok as a spaniel owner I will give my view, its like the electric collars, they and the owner who uses them for gun dogs should be banned but that's another story. there is absolutely no need for pain when training a spaniel, that dog in the video was a great dog was showing attention to the owner/trainer and looked keen and alert, you put it in the sit position and it moves go back to it take it by the collar and put it back where it was, and repeat the command if you do the training right and praise the dog when its good and growl when its bad they soon learn and you will have a happy dog, t
  6. It's not just the grabbing by the ears he hits it on the weakest part of it's back as well, totally out of order. If you google his name this video has done the rounds as it's a yr old
  7. I know Sussex has put a day on the deer, I can offer either a day on the deer or an evening rabbiting. The rabbiting will be a 3 hr session where you can bring a .22 or similar and will get the chance to shoot many rabbits. Or you can just come with me and help out. Most days I get between 10 & 20rabbits The deer will be a day in nov where you can choose either woodland or high seat and you will see deer. You can either accompany me or subject to experience be on your own. Both are here in West Sussex
  8. one of my boy earlier this week, watch the bottom left corner of the bush and he is close as the rabbit only just makes the hole. http://youtu.be/fp_vmzqVEkM
  9. One of the issues is the owner, you get concerned by the fact the dog is going to be scared, so you put the lead on get someone to fire a gun so the highlighted factor as you tighten the lead as the gun going off, this instantly transfers concern to the dog. Try getting the dog used to the result rather than cause, the end result is a retrieve and that is what they want, try going rabbit shooting with a rifle let him see a few rabbits have some fun and shoot some to let him retrieve then he connects the gun with fun, ( do I sound like a poet) Try to be more relaxed, if you see someo
  10. I think in all our outside work and lets take Dan above, he has been using a chainsaw for many years, but does he use it safe or has he got away with it, in my trade after leaving hunting, I joined the fire service and started as a firefighter and became an instructor I had to keep going on courses to be able to teach my trade. but what makes me better than someone who has been doing it for years and the biggest question is who assess the assessors, Sussex like me has been doing it for years, this game is different but have we been doing it right, the end result is the biggest goal, do I/we g
  11. I'm one of many ex terrier men who were digging before these things were invented, and the amount of time I spent with my ear to the ground, digging just to see if I could hear, using sticks to follow holes, sitting waiting, spending a whole day just to find the dog. Then the grey boxes came out and what a god send, I wouldn't have put a dog to ground without one. 2. Yrs ago I gave up terriers after digging foxes for 34 yrs mud got to hard to dig the spade didn't work as good as it used to. Good luck to those who still do it it's bloody fantastic and great to do it.
  12. I've just been reading about deer stalking available on the other site, and how you can pay £75 for a days out, can I ask those who have paid how many days have they paid for and how many deer have they shot on those days? I was reading how the offer is on 3000 acres and last yr 23 roe bucks were shot looking at that ratio there must be hundreds of roe in that wood.
  13. Hi Stu Can I ask and I don't want to change the post but it has been mentioned here, the DSC being compulsory in Scotland but in all I've seen on BASC and BdS and DI I've not seen anything about this coming into England. Do you have access to things we don't do you know any other info, i do feel to spend a lump of money and 4 days to learn about something many of us have done for many years is unfair. Also the course covers Scottish legislation something I'm not interested in, my shooting is wide but wide local to me, we don't have CWD sika or mJ, so deer recognision is not important to
  14. having checked the books and deciding I need to catch up in a certain area as the rain had put me back, the location is good but they have horses and expensive ones and want rid of the deer but aware of the horses, so I have to arrange days in advance, 7 days were lost where I said I would be there and due to rain I couldn't go so I took advantage of the lovely weather we have had this week and set of at 4.30, I was driving down the lane and in the lights of my jeep could see about 25 deer in the field to my left, thinking this should be a good result I parked up and walked to the seat. in po
  15. For so many good post on here and fantastic replies to posts to read such comments as - use training collar, kick it, hit it with a dead chicken- is so disappointing . Dogs are what we make them kick the owner not the dog
  16. Yep me the same but last yr one of my dogs had a sore patch and he lost the hair around it so I took him in and all was treated and ok. When I had my renewal they said re occurring illness is not covered so any future sores on his front leg are not covered. I rang them and asked about it and they said that is their policy. But said if it's not connected or the same as the original illness then it's ok. That would be a hard one to prove either way. But my other spaniel has just just had stitches out following an argument with barbed wire so I'm glad I have the policy
  17. Agreed but the wrong one could prove bad development, toys without stuffin no squeaks, burst them if they have one, no balls and nothing hard.
  18. I wouldn't feed anything else but good quality puppy food, the stomach can only take so much food and if you fill it with crap like pigs ears which is high salt, the pup won't be eating the proper things it needs to develop. This is an important time and a strange time, it's important to you to make sure he is happy not scared shut away puppy. And strange because one min he was in a nice warm safe pack and the next min I'm taken away and left alone, what have I done to deserve this. It's not rocket science there is no complicated out thinking just time, loads of it on a one to one basis.
