  1. I've often heard this said, you should start training at 12 months but says who??? Some children do better than others, there is no written law. Foxhounds start hunting at 6 months but may take a year to turn out good, some never do it. I believe in let a puppy be a puppy enjoy the play but there is nothing wrong to make play fun and turn it into training, my dog is now 2 days over 8 months, and in august I was in Poole and the dog comes every where with me so a large amount of walking on lead shopping and use the heal word is easy. I waited outside a shop whilst wife went inside whilst
  2. Putting the way he has been treated aside, and yes a refund is due but you need to be coy about it as you cant prove you paid it, suggest you pay a visit in a nice way no shouting no arguements, but have a phone in a good position and record the conversation and get him to admit you paid him, then start a claim through small courts. Even the threat of it may make him pay up, if you took the amount out of the bank and there is a record of this tranaction it will help a small way. Doesn't mean you gave it to him but the courts would go with the fact you sign court papers to say you paid and hop
  3. Just to add, dogs don't know the difference between inside and out to a puppy it's all fun, a dog in the wild digs they make holes it's what they do mud has ingredients dogs like be it right or wrong. you take a dog into a grass field and sit or lay on the grass they will scratch at the grass/mud. By bringing a plant into his world(the house) your giving him something natural something to dig at and he will thank you for it. Whether it's right or wrong if your going to tell your dog it's wrong it has to be taught, whatever it is, you don't teach a dog to hunt, you don't teach a terrier to g
  4. If you leave slippers out and the dog chews them who's fault is it? The dog or yours for leaving it out to be chewed? Puppies like and need to chew buy some things to help the teeth and you can get a spray to use to stop chewing, but go back one step why is he chewing and if he is going through so many items it maybe that the dog is needing a little more time spent on him, not just shut in when you go out not saying you do but a good walk before you go out would help, spaniels are f1 cars with a tail, at 7 months the amount of excersise she needs is growing a quick walk down the block i
  5. What about other things, balls, tuggies socks etc, will she carry or fetch them?
  6. The question has been asked when and where, a .22 is ok for fox although I don't agree with it if unless you know what your doing, and as this is your first gun you won't be that experienced so I would say a .22 is not for you. a fox semi tame in someone's garden at 50 yds is not exactly hard unlike one in a wood at 100 yds, you need insurance ie something that will allow for error in the way of 222 .223 or something similar. A good way to start would be a shooting buddy who has the other gun you don't get that way you can pop the rabbits and he can pop the foxes and or swap round. I kno
  7. If your wife says your loud that is not good, voice is the most important part of training, I will stick my neck out here and say that with a gun dog there is never a reason to hit him, I've seen people kicking dogs on a drive for going to get a bird someone else shot, voice is the key. When he is good raise the tone slightly high pitch and really be silly tell her how good she is call her good girl whilst rubbing her side, that will let her know hands are good, they are throwing tools, guides, things to put retrieves in, not weapons, Don't grab her ears and shake them, likewise the word no sh
  8. That's good take it slow, the scream is a sort of "I give up" rolling on back is another. Make sure you are her rock be there for her and give her time but do not raise your voice when she does it, she will be scared and needs to for support and the more dogs she sees the better she will become
  9. If their dogs are rushing chances are they are missing birds, teach your dog to do the job properly it's not a race and when your dog brings up the rear and finds all those missed birds you then have a reason for bringing it up to the person running the drive
  10. Spaniels can be shy she lacks confidence so you need to do a bit more one to one, as she is shy you need to put on your high pitch voice and play make her reallly happy then take her on her own to many public places where there are friendly dogs, your mates dogs fighting is not helpling. Suggest a puppy class where there will be other puppies.
  11. Find an area of open space with bits of brambles, long grass etc, but nothing that you won't lose sight of him. Go to the middle on a lead and get him to work round you as you go in one direction, if he gets too far use the command you want I use steady and then you turn around and walk in opposite direction, keep doing this when he comes back to you praise him encourage him and change direction again, if you use a clock face so say walk forward at 12 come back to 6 then 3 then 9 etc, he will learn to stay close to you. Occasionally drop down in the long grass and hide again its about teachin
  12. What not compromise and get a working cocker, I've got one 7 months ago and he is fantastic so much energy very keen but my god does he learn quick
  13. I wouldn't mind give and take, if the wood was his to let me use it, but it's not
  14. Ive just been pi$$ed off by a guy who went to the land owner i shoot on and said he has shooting rights in the wood next to a big field that often has deer in it and said that he stalks the deer and they are often on his field eating his crops and could he shoot, farmer agreed. turns out he pays for the occasional day in that wood but now has rights to a field i shoot
  15. As jethro said few years ago you got shlt innit. Turns out the old girl is suffering from 20 yrs of crap, whilst I clean it, not every time but most, never goes away without a bit of oil, but that is an issue as certain parts don't like oil of the type I use they like more dry oil. Ive taken it apart and its working better, So I've dropped it in for a professional clean and strip down. I still have the variation forms so may get bolt action as well.
  16. After a visit to my gun shop I'm gonna go for a .17 HMR so advice on these now please, my research begins
  17. Some good replies there and agree whilst the sig does look a bit of fun it's a bit of a paintball gun. The only reason I wanted another semi is because I do a lot with my father who is he drives me round and I pop off bunnies, he enjoys it and I can hang out of the window sort of one armed. I'm gonna pop along to my gunshop and see what they have, may even look at another size. Les I've always found the gun accurate at 50 yds i could Put 3 holes in and inch circle, but will look at bolt action if you think they are more accurate. Cheers everyone. Phill
  18. I've got a 6 1/2 month working cocker and find the more you put in the more you get out, he is keen to learn and already whistle and hand signal trained. When I do one to one he listens and wants to learn, take him out with the terrier and he is not interested in me he just wants to play with the terrier. They also need as mentioned mental stimulation a ball in the park is not enough and just a walk is not always exciting. The problem will come in is that if you always take them out in a group he won't learn a lot as he won't be concentrating on you as he will be a pack animal and it is im
  19. I gave it a good clean today and stripped it all down it worked a little better, but have spoken to my Firearms dept and they happy for me to get another so will still do so.
  20. I've got a Bruno CZ 511 and all has been ok for many years but now it jams every or every other shot, I've tried all types of subsonic ammo and none work better than the other. So I guess we all get old I bought it new at least 20 yrs ago So, what do you lot use? Is there something that holds more than 8 shots? Cheers Phill
  21. I live and shoot in west Sussex and take all game to chantonbury game took a deer in 3 days ago but not sure of current price, ring them they will tell you. Where are you
  22. Wouldn't bother, it's a hard life with no future, it's ok when you're young, that's what I was told as a 16 yr old, 20 yrs later as a 36 yr old it's not easy trying to get a normal job. I'm ok now but it took a while
