If You Could Go Back In Time Where Would You Go??
terryd replied to DogFox123's topic in General Talk
back to the eighties still a few mod cons about but the world hadn't gone completely mad -
I still vote for the long line option lol and get around them often and close and sooner or later one will run from under its nose and it will make a bid for it. Then you can correct it but because you have caught it in the act before its got going you can be more reasonable about it. Rather than doing half a marathon trying to catch the dog all red faced and angry and the dogs ramped up because its just had time of its life. Do that for a month or too then the familiarity kicks in hopefully and things start to turn then off lead the other side of a fence for starters then small fields etc and

Mine seems to trot along at heel on the bike and he matches his speed perfectly and doesn't zig zag about. I hold his lead loosely just in case some thing pops up then I can either let go or as I use the daughters bike with no bar I can put me feet down quickly if needs be and stop

I think thats the thing with most situations with dogs like if you know your dog fights with other dogs and you see one coming and your heart starts pumping and start to stress the dog will pick up on it and take the dominant role and act how it thinks it needs to. I had the same problem with my mums bullmastiff it would kick off as soon as it saw a dog or sheep because she would get in such a panic but if i took the dog and kept calm and quietly corrected the dog before it acted it was fine.Yeeep just all about keeping calm and keeping a eye on the dogs body language ! Soon as the pup could s

i think bird is right. I am the last person to talk as I feel I made a right pigs ear of training mine as I didn't do it the way I should have done. But I had a terrier that was a 110% you could turn your back on him following a line through sheep with out a worry. I have to admit that was due to a hiding. That was going back over 30 odd years and I can remember the exact spot even now and thinking at the time it was for his own good. Which it was because for the rest of life he had a great time and could go anywhere in safety. What gaz says make sense too because my young lurcher never put a

just don't cross the bridge wearing such attire

when you put it like that lol

just to add you don't want the dog getting stressed out every time it sees a sheep either thats what I did with mine as he couldn't even look in there direction with out getting an ear full. Now I have I eased up on him he is more relaxed around them and tends to blank them. But the real test will come this winter

You could try a long line and keep walking by the sheep and get them to run and bollock him if he shows any interest and just put the time in daily

So, Tell Us, What Are Ye All At In The Veg Garden?

The old fashion tall peas done very well and they are a good size saving the rest of that crop for seed now Telephone Pea (very tall) Now this is a well known variety that has stood the test of time. A tall vine that produces mid-season, here we recommend it as an early-maincrop pea. For us it grows to a good 6 feet tall, though others have written in to say that it gets taller (up to 9 or even 10ft!) for them. Although various sub-strains have been developed over the years, its hasn't really changed from the description of 'Carter's Telephone Pea' in Vilmorin's famous book of 1885 on v -

Can't fault that whatdog every thing looks amazing. Winter in the poly first thing that comes to mind for me is winter lettuce for starters. Its all about the taste for us. The wife has done well shelling the peas only another 2 rows left if they do ok very labour intensive and you can buy them for pennies but that's not the point lol. They are our peas -
Ha reminds me of the time time last winter walking the dog across a steep bank on a lead. A rabbit ran across in front of us and he took off after. It was wet and muddy and I couldn't get traction so had no choice but to run along as fast as I could or fall flat on my face. Finally managed to stop him at the bottom. Must looked right plum

yea there is that my local farmer told me to keep mine on a lead so i was bit stuck there and as you say long lead is handy then
-
take mine jogging we did a few 3 milers over the weekend. Seen one local runner take a jr even that little legged fella handles it fine. Just build up slow. Mines not a fan I sense I think he just finds it monotonous though and lags behind

off lead is the way to go from the pup stage once you start on the lead you just give your self another hurdle to cross. I learnt that a few decades ago then forgot it so I did my recent one wrong

Cracking beetroot tonight well pleased. They all ways looks like they are doing rubbish then come good. I would love to not net the brassicas but when I leave the odd plant uncovered it gets stripped bare. Be different if it was in the back garden I could pick them off but no chance up the plot -
