  1. Most of the 'greyhound' foods are just full of crap mate, you only have to read the ingredients to see that. At any rate, high protein, high fat and low (or even zero) carbohydrate is proven to provide for more endurance and stamina, AND faster running times. You might find my post in THIS thread relevant.

Kinky bugger On the topic of poisons, has anyone seen/used Eradibait? It's lethal to rats and mice, impossible for them to become immune to, and harmless to all other species (including people). Basically mice and rats can't vomit, and Eradibait is like super-concentrated cat litter... They eat it, and it starts to draw moisture out of them, and swell... Since they can't vomit it back up, it ends up drying them inside out. Not nice I suppose, but no worse than slowly bleeding to death internally. Also handy in that it's targeted and resistance-proof.
  3. Sorry mate I should have been clearer. I meant that the paper itself seemed to be based on the Cline paper (almost word for word in places) which was taken out of context in some ways.
  4. An interesting read, though a little one-sided paddybarr From what I can gather, the information you quoted was initially taken from Canine Athletes and Carbohydrate Management During Exercise (Reynolds, A and Cline, J). The research both sources are taken from was (admitted by the authors) based on human studies. Dogs and humans, as you know, have very different metabolisms. What of dogs who are running on fat, which is after all their natural energy source? In the scenario above (>60% of calories from fat) the dog is well into fat adaptation - certainly if it has been on the diet for
  5. Nice to see this thread finally getting some decent answers. Tripe is great food as I said. LOL Does anyone else care to admit to using "white dog poo" as pavement chalk when they were kids? I know me and my mates used to...
  6. Before the recent scandal concerning melamine in baby food there was another involving melamine in pet food, added once again to give a false protein level. http://en.wikipedia....et_food_recalls Food companies use the nitrogen-based compound (melamine) in wheat flour and other products to make these products appear to have more protein. Normally, proteins are the only source of nitrogen in food, so by looking for that element in tests, one can figure out relative protein concentrations. I know exactly what my dogs are being fed when feeding raw, do you actually KNOW what is going into p

I agree mate. It's like the antis giving us a hard time for letting our horrid dogs "rip the poor little animals (rats) to pieces". 99.9% of them will happily lay poison and/or traps when they find one in their child's bedroom or the kitchen, though!
  8. Happy to be of use as always mate. No need to feel guilty feeding tripe, it's good tucka!
  9. tripe is 70 % water and low in protein not to good for pup which need high protein. I see this said quite a bit, but it's rather misleading. Tripe is 70% to % water, yes. Just the same as every other piece of whole raw meat, or whole animal on the planet - you and your dogs included. That's not a dig at you personally mate, I just read it a lot on here and there's no justification for it. I've yet to see someone post that you shouldn't bother feeding raw, because it's 70% to % water (and it is!)... Here's the typical analysis from a pack of Prize Choice tripe chunks (chopped pie
  10. I'll post this addendum here as it's not fair to edit my original previous post, in case anyone is already reading/quoting it. Don't forget that research also clearly shows that dogs fed on a raw diet perform better in the field - be it hunting or greyhound racing. When fed a diet high in fat, high in protein and almost zero in carbohydrates (i.e. a raw diet) sled dogs run easier for much longer, and greyhounds run faster. They have a much more concentrated albumen level, more red blood cells, more stamina, and don't receive injuries that control group dogs (fed on kibble) do. That's
  11. There is no evidence that feeding raw poses a risk of infection to a bitch, pregnant or otherwise. I've never heard of such a thing, Dr Tom Lonsdale has never heard of such a thing in decades of practice as a vet advocating raw feeding, nor has anyone else I know of. There is no 'guess work' in feeding raw, and raw fed dogs and litters (mine included) did just fine. Nonsense mate. As you well know, research shows that >% of dogs fed commercial complete food develop periodontal disease at a level warranting surgical treatment by the age of three years. That figure rises to 100% in
  12. The dogs would only shake out the contents of the intestines/guts and stomach anyway mate, you may as well remove them as it lowers the risk of tapeworm transmission. Apart from that, feed them whole (head and all) and you'll be doing the dog a big favour.
  13. I've replied to your PM mc... Sambam has it pretty much right, except I'd say never give as much as they'll eat, as some pups are greedier than others and the last thing you want is them getting fat. I'd also keep at least 70% of the diet as carcasses and/or raw meaty bones (RMBs), too much minced stuff is as bad for their teeth as biscuits/canned food - raw or not. I'd also not bother mixing in dry food, especially a muesli which is full of grains. Cheers.

Disciplinary? If I was them I'd be more worried about the fact they had a rat infestation than the quick means a member of staff chose to get rid of it before it ran through a dining hall full of paying customers. Maybe they were already looking for an excuse to sack her?
  15. This'd be better off in Working Dog Health & Training Talk mate. There's tons of similar threads in there you can have a look through. Personally I'd feed him on a raw diet. Dry is bad for them, tinned is worse. If for some reason you "must" feed commercial food make it something at least marginally suitable like Orijen or Applaws (made from 70% raw meat and bones, 30% fruit and veg, 0% grain). As for question 3, a lean pup is a healthy pup. Don't let him get fat! If you're feeding an appropriate diet (high protein, moderately high fat, low to nil carbohydrates) he won't get fat anywa
  16. I'm hoping s/he had the sense to chew it the second time around? I took the pup out not long after they'd eaten some Orijen last week, after a mate rang and we arranged to go for a walk. I wouldn't normally feed before an outing but as it wasn't planned and I wasn't about to knock back a good look out, off we went... I pulled over when we got there and noticed the pup had spewed his meal back up in his crate, so I waited... Won't be long, I said... but we're going nowhere 'til this pup's had his dinner again; that shit's £45 a bag!
  17. Feeding frozen isn't bad mate, especially in warm weather (Dr Tom Lonsdale likens it to ice cream lol). I wouldn't give it in this weather though, especially if the dog's outside. Start off by feeding bigger items that NEED to be chewed up. Chicken wings, for example, are way too small for everything except the smallest terrier puppies and ferrets. Even then they're too high in the bone:meat ratio to be of much use. Far better to feed a whole or half chicken. Try to source somewhere local to you that has whole chicken frames (basically they take the legs, wings and breasts off and you get the
  18. You've got two JR pups and you're advertising for more, in the plural?
  19. LOL! For what it's worth mate, I wasn't referring to you or anyone on here when I wrote that. Didn't even cross my mind! Been having a few run ins with idiots on another general forum this week. They set my teeth grinding, put it that way.
  20. Other drivers, period. Especially those who hog the middle lane, drive at the same speed through every limit you go through (usually 30 or 40mph), don't indicate properly or worse still indicate improperly, cut you up, and/or have a fit of road rage in your general direction because of something THEY did. All other people, especially antis and people who take you for granted and only want to know you when they want something from you or off you. Women who don't want sex because they haven't had a shower, then have a shower and don't want sex because they're clean. LOL What? People who are clos
  21. No offence fella but Bakers is one of the worst dry dog foods in the UK, and I'm not exaggerating mate. It's full of sugar, artificial colours and preservatives, and it's low in nutrition. If you don't want to spend Orijen money, try Barking Heads Bad Hair Day, or Wainwright's puppy salmon & potato. Cheers.
  22. With the greatest of respect mate, that's not a quality food at all. Please don't think I'm being a clever arse or argumentative, take a look for yourself fella: The main ingredient is wheat. The animal protein is only second on the list, and is an unspecified 'meat meal'. It's the only source of animal protein in the ingredients list. From what animal? What part of the animal? If they're trying to hide the origins, you can bet your bottom dollar it's basically floor sweepings. Any decent meat source would be proudly named and emblazoned across the packet for the world and his wi
