  1. At what stage of the dogs life can these gifted people spot the "good animal"One things for sure, picking good ones from pups is impossible. If you dont mind me saying so.Your attitude is the reason there are so many failed terriers around. Gambling can pay out but most of the time it doesnt.
  2. Some bitches come from proven lines. Not for racing but for producing. Some of these brood bitches will not have done much racing at all. You shouldnt apologise for bringing Greyhounds into it. We could all learn from people who have come from generations of Greyhound breeding. Producing terriers to work should in theory be easier than good greyhounds as good greyhounds have to be almost freakishly good to stand out from the crowd and they also have to beat 5 other dogs every time. Close breeding and line breeding is also practiced in greyhound breeding.
  3. Ive only had one bred by platts. It could run a Hare well but not pick it up. Only caught about one in ten.
  4. If the dog you were using as stud was the sire of both bitches and presumably he was also mustard, then you would bet on the good bitch producing the better percentage of workers. The percentages should improve with further inbreeding of the best specimens produced as the desired genes become more pure for the qualities needed.
  5. Is Dave 58 from the border forum on here? please get in touch. thanks
  6. Ive more or less give up with bsa apart from my jb super10 fac. I dont think Ive ever had a better gun than the hw100k in .177 You dont need many shots like that to make your day, well done...now back to work
  7. nice to see just bull/greyhound being bred.Good strong pups. No collie or saluki clouding the blood.
  8. they are very well made but i went back to leather myself. You cant beat leather if its good quality.jmo
  9. Think the thread is about earth dogs nothing else, but many the terrier has given its life under the sod when it could have came away, would you not call them game. yes i would.
  10. True gameness can only be shown by a dog on the loosing end, when it refuses to give way. That is the meaning of gameness. There is no other meaning ,and the only true test is death. Since it would now be illegal to test a dog that far no one can claim it on this forum.
  11. Growth plates are not set until at least 15 months. Until that time no dog should be galloping other than play. Running dogs often carry injuries that are not outwardly obvious but stop them doing there best. This can be caused by early stress on joints. Its a good idea to take a pup to a bone man for examination for injury before any serious running begins.
  12. Ive got the first one.Very good chapter on breeding that can also apply to dogs etc.Teaches you all about Mendel.
  13. I think ive got one on modern game birds. Or have you tried Read country books?
  14. I know that spraying epsom salts keeps pigeons and slugs off,but you have to re spray after every shower. Ive got net over hoops which does pigeons and pheasants and air rifle for back up.
  15. Ive had them outside but did loose one young cock, when the weather got really cold and deep snow. They have loads of Character and big hearts.
  16. Dogs for sport, gun for killing. Rifles are usually a personal test of accuracy not really sport as the quarry is usually not aware of the danger.Dogs are to be admired for doing and being what we cannot. The gun is personal achievment and dogs are a spectator sport although its not always clear when some are bragging about training dogs to retrieve or digging big holes to terriers. They want to steal the glory for themselves..Fortunatley they are few and far between.
  17. Im looking for some pure Maran pullets,if anyone could help. Thanks
  18. eggsactly what I was thinking!!
  19. Sooty Sam was a Laguna bred dog that came from the Laguna strain. He has been out crossed to so many bitches that i should think the Laguna strain qualities will have been very diluted by now. Ive seen a few of that Laguna strain and they were mostly strong and fast like S/Sam. I bred a Nimrodel bitch to him and there were some good dogs in the litter.
  20. a lot think one jab is ok but its not.You always need two jabs, thats 4 bottles.
  21. Nice litter.I like the way you fend off all the usual aggressive questions by answering them all in one go.
  22. we have just made some in marine ply.Its weather proof and less joints for the mites. I would avoid sheds with lots of planks.
