what defines a working terrier?
jeemes replied to the durham digger's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I have seen excellent digging dogs refuse to go in thick cover............ I think you would describe that has a working terrier that doesnt like cover. -
Sambo-H has it right mate. what the main thing is is containment. stop them getting out. It doesnt matter how you start it will end up with more than one dog going for a single rat and while they are busy with that another three will bolt. that wont matter if they cant get out,but you will be amazed how they do get out. Once when we did some rearing sheds on a pheasant farm we just put wire around each one then two of us got inside the fence with six terriers and lifted up the shed using fence posts as levers. has soon as the shed was 6" off the ground in they went and slaughtered. We then had

For Sale sorry didnt realise couldnt sell for a friend
jeemes replied to top-rabbiting-man's topic in Working Dogs & Livestock
Just a few months ago i bought a well bred pup off Gumtree..The seller is a member off here but has he said if it isnt the shitty comments its all the rules and regs that get you down.In short if you want to sell a dog and you dont want to be judged for selling that property which after all you have every right to do then this is the last place where you will find success... -
yes this is a hunting site not a.......................flog your shit to some poor c**t site Its the livestock for sale section isnt it? I think its designed for people to sell livestock isnt it? whats the problem?

I know its difficult with mature dogs. They dont really want to play or gallop, and a lot wont chase balls and things. A gallop with you whistling him whilst someone holds him is useful, on some grass or field margain.I do this or like you have already done a steady canter behind the vehicle for 3,4 0r 500yds or let him run round in woodland. The smells usually get them going, but they can get into trouble or taken off by roe scent etc. I use a greyhound walker aswell, especially before the season to tighten toes and things up.It also encourages steady breathing.Start with 10mins once hes used to i

Hes mature enough then, but hard ground can do a lot of harm to a dog.I would try and find a bone man in your area and have him checked now and then.It dont usually cost much, but a lot of injuries in dogs dont show but can effect performance.Every dog is diffrent. All you can do is keep him fit.Dont over work him and check for injury now and then. When you say full fitness,if you are talking about a peak of fitness. That will only last a short time before the dog needs resting. You wouldnt want the dog too fit in summer would you?
-
Ive read that a few times but i cant understand it.Can you write it again please.
-
Watch galloping in summer on hard ground. You could do more harm.Is the dog over 15months? If not is growth plates arnt set and again more harm can be done.Steady walking or genral exercise will firm ligaments etc if its regular. You dont want to over train a dog in summer for it to be stale by autumn. Stallion gates in sheffield make good lure machines.

how many times have you outcrossed since the 's?? I suppose I couldn't actually claim they are a line as such, because they've always been out crossed. The closest mating I did was cousin to cousin. So I guess I should call them a family rather than a line. After all, doesn't a line mean that a certain amount of close breeding has occurred? yes.Really to say you have a strain or line all the dogs in the kennel will have to be related.Although I suppose a lot of lurchers are probably related through the greyhound blood,as there are not many greyhounds in the country or even the world

They are not easy with a shotgun if you are shooting at sporting birds 40yds up.Thats the whole idea.Thats what people pay lots of money for.I dont blame you for potting one though. On a legal point I think you should have a game licence unless theyve been fased out.

If its just bald and not sore or unhealthy looking it may just be natural has the vet says.If you go to a Greyhound track you will see a lot of dogs with it. Some say its caused through the Greys having the friction massage but its not its just something they get,so it could be the Greyhound blood.

I would try an electric collar. That way the dog thinks the ferret has given him the jolt and no need for you to fall out with your dog.He will also still respect the ferret when you are out of sight. You would need to get the dog used to wearing the dummy collar though,so he doesnt work it out.He needs to be fooled into thinking its the ferrets,so he needs to be close when you give him the juice, and I would give him a terrier dose.
