  1. Dry cat food is a decent 'short-term' (days or a couple weeks is fine) substitute for proper ferret food but don't go thinking it is ideal for ferrets. The protein is high but decent ferret food is that bit higher and what they require is a high protein food because their intestinal tracts are quite short so they don't have sufficient time to extract/break down the protein in lower grade food. If you are going to feed rabbit don't make the mistake of gutting and skinning it, the ferret needs every piece of the rabbit to balance its diet... their is very little fat on rabbit flesh, it ne
  2. Sorry if it's messed anyone about but I'll just close this thread and let it run on ebay as there are bids on it now. If anyone on here does win it on eBay I'll give you free delivery if you mention your Hunting Life user-name when you win! Sorry!
  3. Oh yes! You despise them at the time but you'd not have them any other way!
  4. Fairly sure that's what he said, my mate isn't local to the NE and I rarely see him these days. As I say it was a one-off night's lamping so I can't vouch for it day-in day-out but it was keen and struck well (rabbits only).
  5. No I run lurchers but I've been out lamping with a friend who had one and it matched my lurchers in open fields.
  6. TBH it really depends as much as anything on what ground you are running them on! They can catch as good as a lurcher and have loads of bottle but run them on rough ground and you have to ask yourself how much hammer they can take!
  7. Stuck this on eBay but if anyone makes a sensible offer it's yours. It really is in mint condition and hardly used! Don't be put off because it's on the German eBay, I am defo in the UK (NE) but it's the only way you can sell multi-tools and/or knives due to the UK laws. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200577673979&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT
  8. Had a bit of interest but no-one putting their hand in the pocket. I've got a bunch of Leatherman stuff on eBay, hopefully you can access it but seeing as how I've got to advertise it through the German site (laws governing knives not as strict) it may not show on a search! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200576620267&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200577678062&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT
  9. I've had them on and off and given the choice they are better 'off'! They are a nonessential claw and serve no earthly good to a dog. To take them off at a day or two old is a very minor thing and it's one less thing to worry about on a working dog... saying that I had a dog that almost tore them off every season and it didn't stop him working, in fact when he caught them it didn't seem to bother him; not saying it's the same for every dog!
  10. I've been using Sneyds Wonderdog for years and even with one dog being a picky eater they've never wanted for anything else. I could be wrong but it may be packaged under other names because I used to get it as a 'Working Dog' feed years ago and a friend who works in a pet shop had a look at it and said he could get the same stuff but cheaper. When it came it was Sneyds; different bag, same stuff! Never bothered mixing anything in unless one dog was getting more graft then I just added a bit of mince and/or cheap pasta (remember when everyone was price matching/slashing 'Nice Price' and it

  12. Couple of tips; go slowly and reward the positive! Go slowly - it's never too early to start but just remember you're dealing with a young animal and it'll be a puppy from now till anything up to 18mths (though many mature way before then). Reward the positive - A dog taught by punishing what you don't want is a lot harder work than a one taught by rewarding what you do want. I'm sure many good books and DVD's will expand on this but try and manufacture situations where the dog does what you want then you can praise it; retrieves down a corridor or narrow alley mean the dog has to com
  13. £1300 WOW! I can only assume that as the pups LL was talking about were 'dumped' they must have had 3 legs... between them. Oh and my private Lear jet uses a bit more than £1300 worth of diesel! mate they were 5 months old and kept in a flat, they had not been out on a lead, socialised or feck all, thats why they WERE free, now there free to who ever may find em, where ever they maybe, poor little fuckers Maybe you can slyly enquire at the dog warden in the morning? See if they have been handed in. Say some guy in the pub was trying to sell them and you went home

  15. Completely wrong type for me as it happens. I'm not up on Mastiffs or their crosses so the name meant absolutely nothing to me!
  16. Sorry if these seems dim... but what is 'boerbel'? I'm not far from Ashington and if there was a spare bitch going and it was a good-un I might be able to help you out. That isn't meant to sound mercenary, not sure how else to phrase it! God, you charge a fair whack for just a journey up the road Sorry, I thought the dogs were free! Offering to pick up and take one door to door (70 mile round trip) for a complete stranger didn't seem unreasonable, especially if LL was just taking them in because they were to be dumped. Maybe I got the wrong end of the stick and these d

  18. Handy little tool that is great for fishing, shooting or hunting! Used but cleaned and oiled; £7.50 +90p postage
  19. Use musician's microphone XLR male to female connectors; cheap to buy, wire/solder and connect/disconnect!
  20. Here's a basic trial; 1 Marking rabbit in set. Dog must mark which pipe the rabbit skin is up. 2 Retrieve. The dog must retrieve a dummy (fur covered or normal). 3 Hold bolted rabbit. The handler is to place a net on a pipe, as the rabbit bolts the dog must hold the rabbit in the net. 4 Stop. The dog is to be stopped as it returns to the handler. 5 Catch bolted rabbit. A dummy rabbit will bolt from a pipe while the owner is behind a cammo screen for 30 seconds(the dog can see the owner but the owner can not speak to the dog), the dog must chase without verbal command.
  21. I got the In-Laws a 3/4 Beddie Whippet about 9-10 years ago (looks 'almost' 100% Beddie) and it can be a little bugger as a pet but when it comes to kennel with us for holidays twice a year, it makes a cracking moocher though I need to spend the first day or two sorting out who's boss; after that it falls in line with my dogs and quickly susses out what I expect
  22. Never nice to hear of animals getting hurt when they are grafting for us. I regularly just walk the land in the daytime where I have permission and sort out stuff that could harm my dogs; I shift old posts (or worse new posts left with pointed ends sticking up just about the height to impale a dog on the lamp), big rocks turned up in plough (keen dogs with bloody noses or dislodged teeth from striking a rock rabbit). During the Summer I mooch around and take a pair of snips so that I can tidy old/snapped wire. Pays dividends for me and the farmer is always pleased to see me especially
  23. IMHO even the most basic of obedience is better than none and I love to hear of people putting in the effort. I wouldn't normally have even considered looking at someone else's 'cast-offs' but this seems to be a different case and I've got a gut feeling it could work out. I need to see just how headstrong this young bitch is... mind sometimes when you click with a headstrong dog and you are both in tune they can give you the best back. Will be interesting to see who is boss when I meet with the owner and dog.
  24. My old dog died during the Summer and seeing as how my 'young' dog is coming up to 12 (still keen to ferret and do some lamping so long as it is just the odd few), I've been looking at getting a pup. I've spent 6mths looking for an Aussie Cattle dog (Blue Heeler/Kelpie) x Greyhound as I recall a couple of these being put through some Lurcher Trials that I used to run and they were very biddable animals that looked to be tidy for working and for me obedience in the field is paramount. I know that obedience isn't everyone's top priority and I've no arguments that a lamping dog that; slips, run
