  1. PLEASE! Why do people get hung up on raw? I'm not knocking it but it isn't the be all and end all of diets.
  2. With regards to giving your pup milk - many dogs are lactose intolerant as the enzyme required to digest milk decreases as a pup moves off the the bitch's teat. Some dogs can digest milk with no ill effect but it affects to some degree approx % of adult dogs, of that % it will vary between a dog getting slightly loose stools, to a dog literally having the trots for days afterwards (which in a pup is dangerous as they can become dehydrated through water lost in their bowel movements) and it is dependent upon the amount of milk consumed and obviously full fat milk is the worst. Not a lot of pe
  3. This isn't meant to sound patronising but any increase in intake will have more faeces. There'll be a lot less in the stools from just chicken and rice than there will from 'dried' food but that's normal if you think how much water there'd be in the rice and chicken; imagine how much you'd look at feeding if you dehydrated the chicken and rice! Does that make sense?
  4. Different dogs react differently to different foods so it could be a case of just finding the right one for your dog. The other thing is that constantly changing foods will affect your dogs digestion and it sometimes takes a while for dogs to settle on a food, which means that buying a kilo or two of whatever people suggest then swapping to the next suggestion a week later, might upset the dog and you'd not find the one that it settled on the best. I'd suggest trying BETA Puppy as it is (as far as any decent complete puppy feed can be) a good quality product BUT I'm sure there'll be someone
  5. Always an interesting one that! How about all those folks with 1st crosses... Greyhounds making up a fair chunk of any lurcher's make up but aside from track/flappers etc. you'll not find many coursing/working Greyhounds around. As for genuine working Collies, Beddies and Deerhounds; I accept that there are a few of each around but stacked against the quantity of non-workers the number is abysmally small. Would many people question someone breeding first cross Collies if both dam and sire were from genuine working stock? With the exception of a few breeders, who still works their pure
  6. Is that another Blonde moment... WhippetxDeerhound?
  7. I'd have suggested a D'hound/H'hound or possibly a Beddie/G'hound. You could of course find a good working line-bred/lurcher to lurcher dog that is broken/rough coated and likely as not it'll have all of the crosses mentioned before mixed in there somewhere! Is your bitch a 1st x or a 3/4 G'hound? Personal preference but If it's a 1st X I'd be looking to ensure the stud dog is lighter framed so that the pups don't throw too heavy... but then again some folks like a dog with a bit of weight as it's reckoned to have a bit more stay for a day/nights work. Actually thinking about it, tho
  8. My old dog that passed away last Summer was a Dave Pike dog (14 yrs old) and yes he lived above the Wolsingham Show site, kept his own free range/organically reared pigs. Went back to his place after he judged a show once so that I could see his line of dogs (the dog came to me 2nd hand) and he seemed a decent sort, certainly the dog that I had was a good un!
  9. Which way is the sire bred?
  10. Thems ugly rabbits you've got round your way!
  11. I had a white/light fawn dog and still have a black one and I can assure you that when I had the pair out without the lamp switched on, I could see the black dog in the dark as easily if not more so than the light dog and I can put hand on heart that the light coloured dog caught more than the black... I have a feeling that numbers caught had fcuk all to do with the colour though! As an aside; I can remember going on a club lamping comp and the other guy turned up in a white trackie (no reference to any other current thread ) and we had plenty of runs (had the comp finished in 30 mins
  12. I might be reading this wrong but are you trying to bump up the protein content of the feed? If so, the protein content of two foods isn't cumulative; the present protein content (if you are feeding equal amounts of biscuit and dried food) as you describe is 19.5%! To increase protein content you need to either feed a bit more of the 27% feed or buy a food with a higher protein content, failing that add a bit more meat to the diet. Sorry if I've misread the intent of your post.
  13. What do you know of the Lurcher that sired them and how confident that they are defo LurcherxWhippet?
  14. he nearly two hes done two seasons now and proved his self big time this season im proud of him nearly 2 and done 2 seasons what age did you start him 3 and a half months what lamping yes on the lamp
  15. Cheers! However are the pups in Ireland? I don't mind a bit of travelling but over to Ireland is a bit of a hike and the only alternative is puppy courier and I'd want to see the animal first.
  16. I've no problem with travelling for the right dog but even following your good advice there are major pitfalls! You arrive to view the pups, the seller trots out an impressive sire that is his mates dog and maybe even takes you out to see the dog work (though not really feasible from now till Sept/Oct), however there is absolutely no guarantee that the dog you've seen is genuinely the sire! A dozen years ago I went with a mate to collect a pup for him, the parents were both viewed and were just the right type yet when the pup got up to 6mths it was obvious either the pairing had thrown
  17. Sometimes that is easier said than done! I'm on the lookout for a decent pup and if I'm honest I'd 'like' it to come from working stock but so long as the dog is a cross of whatever makes up a lurcher (my preference would be any combo of D'hound/Collie/Beddie/Kelpie/G'hound/Whippet but with all due respect to the lads that run them, preferably very little if any, Bull or Saluki) then I'll take my chance and put the hours in with whatever pup I get, working stock or not. However... there in lies the problem, there are pups that do appear for sale on here and as I don't personally kn
  18. I'm looking for a good all-round grafter, so any bitch pups would be of interest!
  19. I think calling them in or stopping them before they get their blood up is one thing but to stop a dog on it's prey when it is in full flight is virtually impossible. I couldn't even stop mine by diving on him as he launched past me heading for the road after putting a hare up in the sand-dunes... and yes I was 'calling him off' as he ripped out of my grip!
  20. Did you breed the dog yourself, if not do you know if the breeder is doing any repeats? I had a guy enter a Kelpie X in a lurcher obedience that I ran at a Lurcher show and it was a cracking animal and by all accounts it was a phenomenal ferreting dog.
  21. My In-Laws have a 'pet' 3/4 Bed 1/4 whippet and we look after it regularly so it comes out mooching with mine. It has fantastic prey drive... maybe a touch too much for my liking as the little tw4t won't take heed when it spots ANY form of prey no matter how far off and I know that is an admirable quality but it honestly does my head in that it won't even leave the rabbit that is 100yds away but sitting 5yds from set... no matter how many times it belts up the dyke back! I'm not sure that you gain much from the 3/4 reverse as this one essentially looks and acts just like a Beddy, so much so
  22. Other end of the country otherwise I'd have been interested! Best of luck as its nice to hear folk who are happier they go to working homes than be sold at any cost.
  23. You need to get out more... or considering time on here; read more threads!
  24. Pics of pups and Dam/Sire would be good.
