Just trying to tie up a few loose ends for another young chap to take out on our program, hopefully in the next few weeks we should have another young chap with sufficient interest to take up stalking and Wildlife Management. Its very satisfying to me seeing new chaps coming into the sport , both Andrew and myself feel as long as the situation dosent get abused hopefully we will continue with the program and these lads will continue to help us and learn as they go along and all those who take part in our scheme will benefit both now and in the future. We are trying hard to make stalking ava

Red Stags Stories & Pics
Caprelous replied to Canadian Black Bears's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Hi Rob I have never shot a red stag but quite a few hinds. I had some stalking Nr Crook in Windermere where there is quite a large herd of lowland redeer of quite large preportions , I was out this particular day when a string of 22 hinds and calfs came through the wood off the nearby hill and in my cull program I needed to reduce the numbers down to 18, anyway i was on my own and as the string came through , I Slotted the leaing hind and the rest being confused with no leader ,shot off in all directions not knowing which hind to follow so it was a cock up on my part i thought i would -
Putting A Price On Sporting Rights
Caprelous replied to wayneinthepub's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Stuart...is this the only way to hunt there by leasing land fromm someone if you don't own yourself? That sure seems pretty pricey. I own 50 acres of prime woodland for deer (swamps, hardwood, softwood) but there is lots of government land which anyone can hunt for free and we do not need permission. As well, I had permission to hunt 75+ acres of blueberry fields for bears and did not have to pay the landowner anything other than a hello whenever he was down in the area. Of course, he wanted as many bears killed as possible as they probably destroyed 2-3 acres of blueberries. That being said, -

How longs a piece of string??????? Where abouts is it , species of deer on the ground, what are the past years cull figures for each species. is it private .is it forestry commision, so many unknown variables. Personally I think £1 acre is fair if not a lot of deer are on the ground but expect to pay in excess of £10 acre pending were it is and circumstances, i should say there is always someone somewhere who will top your offer so if you intend tendering for a piece of land the least people are aware of its exact position the more likely you will be successful if you know what o me -
Exceptional I have had them run in at me through barley just like that totally oblivious . Funny enough it was about 20 minutes after i piped him, the art is not to be to handy in the use of it or its achieves the opposite effect i have found ,and to use it with caution very infrequently. I have in the past called them with a broad blade of grass placed between my two thumbs Good footage to the film I must admit. Cheers Stu

Hi Rob Thats correct we do not have a limit as to how many you can cull , but those amongst us assess the deer on the ground and condition .taking into consideration of habitat in which they live , we then form a cull program to sustain those animals on the ground and along with possible damage control to growing new plantations etc and decide how many and which animals to remove in the cull program. Well done Billy by the way nice cull doe Cheers Stu Hey Stu, You mean the gov't lets you manage the herd with no intervention? If so, that is awesome as nobody knows better w

Gents you will have me blushing I am glad that Luke ( Bert 69 ) Enjoyed his experience with both myself and Andrew and I most certainly look forward to meeting him again. unfortunately although we did see quite a few deer whilst out circumstances didnt lead to a successful end to the stalk but hopefully next time Luke comes up he will connect, Both Andrew and myself do try help would be new comers into the sport and offer this open oppurtunity into stalking free well really its not free really as its a condition that a participant helps in our wildlife habitat program in converting an a

Are they Hypopotemooses you have up there then

First of all without seeming pendantic we refer to what you call horns as antlers over here, The six species of deer found in our small island are quite small to those compared in Canada. All the species and discription can be found in detail here on the British Deer Societies web page. http://www.bds.org.uk/ Look under information and then species every thing you need to know is there. I should say however that generally all the species of deer are uniform in size in there species but there are exceptions to the rule where certain strains in the gene pool such as roe deer show mar

When I was a lad, we often eat deer that had been hit by cars, the question in this case was weather the chemicals whizzing around its body, after the accident and before it death would have ruined it. I am guessing, that an injured deer that is then tracked by a dog and dispatched, would also experience the same chemical dump. Out of interest, are deer that have been killed in this way allowed to enter the commercial food chain? NO Without trying to sound really ignorant then, as I have only been used to open hill stalking, why do so many roe talkers take a dog with t

The carcass more than likely will be bruised and badly blooded if the internal rumen has been punctured ,the green contents will have already contaminated the inside of the carcass with bacteria.. The chemical contained within its bloodstream through the stress will more than likely have imparted a taste to it. If its for yourself and you actually witnessed the RTA then it may be fit for consumption but must not be placed into the food chain at a game establishment. You need to be certain that a vet had not attended the scene and injected it to prevent suffering as if you did eat i

Good write up mate looks like you enjoyed yourself

Correct its where the wind flows upwards taking your scent with it then flows back down behind the deer thats spooked

Some of us have experienced a situation when wind blowing in our face whilst stalking an animal and suddenly it spooks getting wind of us ,which is hard to explain ,how can a deer sense you when wind is coming towards us. even in light wind conditions, The following may go a little way in understanding what happens when faced with Katabatic Winds. and Anabatic winds Katabatic winds Katabatic wind (from the Greek: katabaino - to go down) is the generic term for downslope winds flowing from high elevations of mountains, plateaus, and hills down their slopes

gerfalcon.. Do you want to continue using this forum? Its a wonder If its full of people who you wish to rise above...why not head over to one of the upperclass stalking forums... OR maybe you could shut up being a complete pompous fuckwit and post something beneficial for everyone, instead of the drivel...excuse the French.. Ian he might but I don't ,In all honesty its not a place I want to be, having seen first hand and having to endure shite remarks from a certain individual . I bit my tongue long enough . Is always been my philosophy in life to help others , just as i was helpe

Moon phases and how it effects stalking
Caprelous replied to Caprelous's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Agreed As for roe being out on windy nights, a very experienced lad once told me that they dont like the fact that they cant hear properly in the noisy, windy wood at night and what I have observed would seem to back him up True to a certain extent WILF they dont like being in open woodland and small coppice as the trees groan and creek around them and they cant distinguish if there is danger about where the danger lies. However in regard to blanket forestry in regard to block planting once they get deep inside the wood they are protected and extreemly sheltered from the elements
