  1. Why not buy it direct from the US online? It usually works out cheaper for such things in my experience OTC
  2. I have never used it myself Matt but I don't know why more British trappers don't use it - afterall the Americans swear by it for speeding up the reaction of the trap and protecting it from the rust that quickly takes over our traps. I have brought back a few British made traps from the USA over the years for my collection and they are in far superior condition to our own of a similar use and age OTC
  3. Sounder - is that limestone?? It looks like it from those pictures anyway. It is what they call 'Karst' or 'limestone pavement' if I remember rightly OTC
  4. That is just the reflection in the photograph Mark, the pans are silver. By the way - they are Springer traps not Fenns OTC
  5. Genuine Fenn traps will be stamped with the name A. FENN on the plate and sometimes with the patent number 763791 on the brass tongue. Springer traps will be similarly identified - having SPRINGER clearly stamped onto their plate. The Solway traps have no markings as such yet but I understand that this oversight will be corrected at the earliest opportunity to distinguish them from cheap imported Chinese copies. (Genuine Solway traps have square cornered plates, whereas most of the cheap fakes have rounded corners ) If you ask the supplier of the origin of the traps for a guarantee that
  6. Aha!! so that's how Ditch Shitter really put his back out then . . . coughing my arse . . . he's been shimmying his way through the bog land to check his mink traps . . . OTC
  7. Can anyone recommend a good Northern Soul compliation CD I can look out for now my past musical taste has been revived?? There seem to be a few on the market - which one/s are top?? OTC
  8. I said that it had been a long time!! 'My' incubators were Western ones, big things with moving paddles to circulate the air and seperate tray hatchers, hatching 30000 a week at peak times but to be honest I didn't have a lot to do with that side of things OTC
  9. On the scale you are talking lgray, I would stick with a thermostatically controlled atmosphere however best you can achieve it and keep it constant be that with fresh or recirculated air. Temperature should be 37.6 degrees C, and humidity around 50% until the final days (22-24) where it should be increased so that the chick does not dry out in the shell or he cannot chip out. 24 days setting time for pheasants and english partridges - (not sure about grouse) if my memory serves me right It is a fiddly and frustrating task but the reward when you get it right is obvious!! Good luck

I had forgotten how good they sound - that'll be me up in the loft looking out my old singles this afternoon then!! Second thoughts - I have no turntable anymore I'll have to get a CD of the classics to make up for it OTC
  11. Go to the new thread for 'King Rat 2008' and get the rules and regualtions that Ditch Shitter has posted up so you get the photo and measurement right lads OTC
  12. Nice old trap Ditch, Sam certainly knew how to make those didn't he? Mine is missing its spring but surprisingly the wood, albeit worm eaten, is still in one piece. To be honest I have not given much thought to this type of trap over the years so it is very interesting to see the variations on a common theme appearing. OTC
  13. I like the look of the homemade gas pipe mole trap - that is a really good idea! OTC
  14. Welcome to the site Andrew. I think that the seemingly minor addition of the company name on the trap plate will differenciate between the Solway genuine approved trap and the inferior Far Eastern made copies which is important for the trapping community - that way they know they are buying the right trap. There is a following of A FENN and his own branded traps as the 'original' spring trap but they are getting harder to source following the flood of these cheaper traps onto the market through eBay etc. I wish you well with the improved trap. OTC
  15. Send him my best for speedy recovery FPO OTC
  16. I see the outright ban was overturned so snaring may continue in Scotland 'with restrictions' http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7252665.stm OTC
  17. Carrions are very suspicious birds Lloyd. I have caught them in all manner of traps including the Larsen but I think that there are better ways of dealing with them rather than trapping them (as stated previously) before the bandwagon of 'I caught a carrion once in a cage trap so you are wrong OTC' starts up. The old 'hoodie' type spring net traps were very effective as a trap for carrions because they don't physically have to walk into a cage as such which is what they don't like doing. They will do it, but not willingly. They are highly territorial birds Lloyd - get a decoy owl and s
  18. Don't forget the curtains at the bottom of the funnel - just like the ladder - or the black-jacks will just fly straight back out again, they work well for these and rooks but not so good in my experience for carrions Lloyd. Get in under the nests in the pitch dark and shoot them - that is the best thing for those black marauders. OTC
  19. Aaron, Could you please let me know where in UK law it states this so I can be sure. Codes of practice issued by BASC etc are just general advisories not law. I would like to know the legality of using or not using stops on fox snares, or at least where you got this information from. OTC
  20. Me too - but only for up close shots - if it is long lens shots then I am out of the running . . . Dox and JD should have their own category . . . OTC
  21. What do you mean - 'how do you mean'?? If you mean about having a contact to get the materials for the nets - well . . . that would be telling wouldn't it?? :secret: OTC
  22. They are expensive because the heavy spun nylon is so bloody expensive - unless you can find a good contact in the MOD I have made them with 3 inch and 3 1/2 inch mesh - it is down to personal preference I have always found them better if made to 7 foot rather than 5 or 6 foot though, and double pegged helps it all purse up quickly. OTC
  23. That'll be tea all over the PC again Ditch . . . that is an understatement I should say I will also be looking into the CO detector issue myself - I have a gas powered AGA in my kitchen fireplace so that has to put me at some risk I would think. Are they just a DIY store thing?? I might pop out and get one this afternoon just to be on the safe side. OTC
