Approved 'fenn' type Spring Traps
OldTrapCollector replied to john b's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I had heard that too OJ, they have some means of testing the traps that they didn't have before apparently? OTC -
I have had some exposure to the British Military and having now met both Ray and Bear, and having some direct involvement with one of them I can say that they are simply putting the art of bushcraft/survival etc in the public eye and making money from it. Good on them! Whether Bear was or was not badged SF makes little difference to his skill set does it? It does Ray no harm to have not been a serving soldier does it? The public, mainly male, viewer wants to watch grass roots television and these guys are producing the shows for them to watch, just as 'The Bush Tucker Man' did in Australia and

Or even produce a new trap altogether - now that would be nice to see home inventors, pesters and 'keepers making up a new design OTC -
Game farm hand needed
OldTrapCollector replied to stork's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
What are all you 'game keepers job wanted' and 'how do I get into gamekeeping' crowd doing about this?? Jobs like this are few and far between, you have to take them when they are (rarely) offered. Do you expect jobs to turn up on the estate up the road from where you live or something?? Get out there and do it, make the move, and enjoy the life. You'll never look back. Otherwise don't ever say that you weren't asked OTC -
A few kania and Bodygrip photos

Hmm I will wind my neck in then - I am working with the Approval Orders and approved traps at the moment in my research - I think I have just become drowned in info . . . OTC -

OJ - I know the Victor 120's and other such traps are cheaper elsewhere but they are not strictly approved by DEFRA for use in the UK - only the BMI Magnum is OTC -
Setting TheTalpex Mole Trap
OldTrapCollector replied to Rolfe's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Interesting idea filling in around the trap after setting - I have had hardly any experience with mole trapping but that which I have done was taught to me in the 'keep it clean, and cover it over' method. I suppose it makes sense that Mr Mole will be along and think he's had a landfall in his run. Thanks OTC -
Approved 'fenn' type Spring Traps
OldTrapCollector replied to john b's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I have just examined the Solway Feeders traps I have here and have noted that the No.4 trap does not have the problem of the No.6 - the jaws fit tight together all the way round. The No.6 trap has the 'gap' at the side of the jaws, which I think could be easily eliminated by a further half inch 'bend' in the flat steel killing jaw in manufacture. I am sure Andrew is reading this thread with interest and will be getting onto the case. I also think that the 'approval experts' will have considered the 'new' trap from a point of view of the extra powered springs sitting in an already proven d -
He has been ok with me in the past, I guess that I am a little more fussy as to what I bid on and know what I am getting before I do. I doubt eBay would ban him fishfish, just a strike as they call it. If you want traps or have traps to swap then you only have to ask - I might know where to find what you're looking for OTC

I have copies from source of the 'field tests' done on the DOC series of traps and they seem to be mustard on stoats - maybe there's not much else there to trap in NZ?? OTC

British traps for mammals
OldTrapCollector replied to mole trapper's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Just about anyone could fill a book with pictures of old and unusual traps John but if the scant details and associated names are incorrect then what is the point?? Surely this would just compound the problem, leaving the 'what's this I found' finder with the wrong name ringing in his ears? There are so many fundamental errors in the book that it barely passes the 'this is a gin trap' stage. There is no substitute for proper and accurate research IMO and this book has little to offer that has not been published elsewhere before. Even Bateman's photo booklets with the Bird and Rabb -
British traps for mammals
OldTrapCollector replied to mole trapper's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Well you asked for an opinion M T and that is mine!! You see - I know a thing or two about traps, and a little about books and as a 'book on traps' it falls well short of the mark . . . and is misleading to say the least with all of its innaccuracies Ditch has his own view of this 'wise trap afficienado' too - I'm sure he'd be more than too willing to share it with us in his own inimitable style presently . . . British traps for mammals
OldTrapCollector replied to mole trapper's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
From a hardened trap collector's view the book is nothing more than a poor comic I'm afraid Bailey's line drawings are quite nice but I happen to know that the 'wealth of knowledge' of mouse and rat traps is not his own, and as for the rest of it - it is so flawed throughout with inaccuracies and untruths it is pretty worthless in my opinion. Friedrice - it is hardly incarcerated in thick obstructive rust is it?? Brush it over with a wire brush and put it to use - there are far rustier traps than that set in tunnels the length and breadth of this land as we speak! OTC

Carnegie, back in the 1800's, used to advocate the use of a dead cat or 'vermillion' as the premier fox baits or attractants . . . OTC

I don't know - as I said before, I have never used either myself, but there must be a reason. Perhaps the availability issue is the reason behind it? The fact that it is not freely available over here might be why British trappers don't use it as a matter of course. Or maybe the traditional line of not allowing any man-made scents anywhere near traps has put folks off?? OTC

A good coating of regulation 'vauxhall leaf green' paint will preserve the trap much better than no coating at all. I know a lot of trappers use that for the same purpose. OTC
