  7. as i have said before i have seen quite a few beddie/greys work a good friend of mine had a cracker.the ones i have seen dogs 23 bitches 22-23 generally speaking. have seen a few beddie/whippet/greys work size varied 21-23 the ones i seen.cant say why the beddie/greys are not more popular these days.i am sure there are beddies about who would produce a good lurcher when put to a greyhound. i own a beddie he is only used for ferreting rillington bloodlines going back generations on the sires side gutchcommon on the dams side.the reason i have a beddie for ferreting is because i cant use a lurch

    electrician 31 years.
  9. back when i started early eighties plenty of lurcher to lurcher dogs about worker to worker saw some very good dogs too. the beddie crosses were very popular. for the hares in my area a few of the older blokes[i was young then] had deerhound crosses and they could do the job.it was so much easier to get a run back then. peoples attitudes have changed to hunting with dogs and it certainly isnt for the better.
  10. well done to your son. its great to see youngsters getting involved.
  11. the more handling you do the better. put some pipes out on the grass let them go thro them.well handled ferrets are what you want. good luck with them.
  12. apart from the hybrids. there are breeders of pure breds which have very good laying ratesie rhode island reds light sussex leghorns plymouth rocks white wyandottes etc.they are in the utility register in practical poultry. i crossed a welsummer cockeral with some warren hens last year and kept back 3 hens.they are proving to be a very good laying bird more than happy with them.
  13. lovely dog must admit have a soft spot for this cross.
  14. train the pup to retreive in a narrow passageway where it has nowhere to go but back to you. good luck with the pup.
  15. seen a few beddie/greys work over the years.the bitches usually level about 22-23 generally.the ones ive seen i was impressed with.made good lamp dogs. good daytime mooching dogs. seen them take hares from time to time preban.dont know why there not more popular these days. used to see plenty about in the 80s.

  18. a friend of mine who is now 70 was a beddie/whippet fanatic.i have watched a number of his dogs work over a 25 year period. i have also seen a number of beddie/whippets work owned by others.all these dogs could find/catch/mark rabbits.they had enough speed to catch healthy rabbits on the run.made very good ferreting dogs 1st class noses.very strong prey drive.in their elemement hunting up.very determined little dogs.prone to be a little headstrong.just plenty of patience and common sense needed on the obedience side of training as with most dogs.good vermin dogs seen them catch feather on occa

    marans

thanks to everyone for the info and replys
  21. you dont say what you are going to use the dog for lamping? ferreting? general daytime mooching letting the dog hunt up? collie x whippet/greyhound. beddie x whippet/greyhound. beddie whippets can do the job. cant comment on whippets have no real experience of them. im sure plenty people can give you advice on these. are there any people in your area who hunt similar land.see what dogs they use ask if you can tag along.dont rush into anything. hopefully you can get out with some people and view there dogs in action and make your mind up from there.
