After a number of years without any hounds, I decided the pack could do with some pure hounds, a step up from the beagle x terriers I own & run. I've also added a pair of beagles ( Ziggy & Barney) plus the young fox hound bitch (Amber). They will help me to locate any rabbits that require action after any farmer has made contract & reported a problem. This type of work has been my bread & butter for the last 25 wonderful years. Further to this now, I have 3 adult beagles, two bitches and a dog along with 3 puppies I bred made up of two bitches and a dog. I kept all the puppies

I'm sure he will be ready for work in a couple of weeks time, so long as the wound has closed over. At the time of what ever, happened to Tiger, he was keen to carry on, but his wobbly walk told me otherwise. He has a real sense of humour and when I used to allow him to ride up front in the cab with me ,if we stopped to visit somebody, he would sneak off, go into the house unnoticed, grab a shoe and return to sit on the lawn with his prize. The shoe owner would rush forward and get his shoe back, and shut the front door, only to have tiger replete the crime again by going around to the back do

It takes but two, maybe 3 seconds to take the picture if it was bad ,those 2 or 3 seconds isn't going to save the dog.

My 3-year whippet "Tiger" hit a stick or something (unseen) sharp chasing a rabbit & returned to me on wobbly legs. The wound in the middle of his chest looked deep & I had trouble stopping the bleeding. By the time I had rushed the 20 minutes to the vets, by then my dog had gone into shock. The vet told me in the examination room that the puffed area behind one front leg wasn't a good sign, usually it meant the leaking of air into the chest cavity .That was not good news at all. I didn't stay as I had other dogs to attend to at home, it was there that I later noticed a message came i

No I didn't bother with her papers, however I know of the kennels where she was bred & her Sire & Dam.
-
Yip she's no whereas tall as those type, she came from show stock .

Amber is small for her breed, she was bred at a kennel that's the only one that breeds Foxhounds in New Zealand. At only 8 months old, She has some growing to do yet ,but fair to say, she is small for her breed. I really don't like big dogs for my type of hunting, it serves no real purpose for me. I have a friend who runs a pure GWP dog who is huge, a couple of hours in, and he's done, loudly puffing after crashing around in the heavy cover. The dog sounds like a freight train coming ....

Amazing how many rabbits under a 40 container
toolebox replied to Guss33's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
And halfway around the world it's no different, I wish I had a $ for every rabbit I've got out from under a shipping container, I'd retire and spend the rest of my days...... rabbiting ......hey wait a minute...... This lot came from under the two small hen coops in the background, last week .It does appear that rabbits are under something these days ,normally It's something big & too heavy to shift. "Bean" the dog is a great help, as now days I swear I'd trip on a bloody match stick. -
Amber is an English foxhound bitch I brought at the tender of 12 weeks old, at present she's about 8 months old .I've taken her with the rest of my pack of rabbiting /bushing dogs from day one, and she has never been a pup, apart from the odd play with another member ,when she felt like it . Amber is all about work, her cast has always had plenty of distance, even at such a young age .She is a delight to share time with.

I agree, also I'm not from your part of the world however I can confirm that rabbits can recover from RHD but as already stated, but it takes time. How long that might take depends on a lot of different factors. It makes good common sense, if you want to hunt and get healthy bags then they will need time to breed up, this will have to be managed well ,it's not the time to have greedy people take what's left after RHD has laid low the population. Getting that information and message out there, is important and the key to having some great sport for all to enjoy going forward.

The rabbits I feed out to the ferrets, I strike the head with a hammer, gutted & skin left on as this is important for roughage. All that's left of the head is the bottom jaw bone & teeth. Ferrets love the brain matter & tongue. I also feed pigeons roughly plucked. A Balanced natural diet I think is best, however it does require some management over the hot summer months. I also forgot to add fish, fed out once a week, either a trout or a fresh eel fillets. I rarely feed eggs ,when I do, so I only use the yolk or is it the white ? Furthermore, I bloody cant remember now ,losin

How do people find the time to run multiple dogs
toolebox replied to the lamping ferreter's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
That is a top action photo SC.I know only one other pig hunter that places the tracking collar around the loin, he swears that this placement gives the collars a huge amount of protection. -
The second picture along with the third & forth are all the one bitch as a pup till now .

That wee fella doesn't know or care the way his legs look ,it's humans like myself that judge those type of legs. It's also fair to say that once you saw what the dog had to offer, underground, you would think his legs were the best damn legs a dog could have, grafters do that to you and are a joy to spend time with while involved in the sport.Sadly good honest workers are becoming hard to find.
-
I hate those legs on any dog ,any breed, it would have to effect the running & speed of any dog surely ?
-
What I've found is if you start them out in the field when they at the age of about 3/4/5 months old out for a walk ,at the report of the shotgun as long as it's a single shot they won't bolt off like they will when they get older . If they are effected by the report a young pup will return to you for safety, if they begin to be effected badly I rest them at home for several months otherwise it begins to become a deep-seated problem, that may well stay with them for their whole lives . My whippet x greyhound "Carla"

Having reached the golden years, where I am now receiving some of my tax money back, I too have given thought to my retirement & what that might look like for me. My plan was letting my lot (dogs)age and fall off the perch one by one. However, of late I noticed an add-on the net about some hound puppies. I kept a keen eye on the add, noting the price dropping in stages over a couple of weeks. I looked and ponded, & decided since there is only the one breeder of that breed here in New Zealand, it was now or never. This was a twofold decision, one deciding if I wanted to pass over some

To be frank, I'd be more worried about RCD, it keeps on killing for many years. You start to notice that a few rabbits are getting about, then they just disappear overnight it would seem. The virus can wait, for up to a year, down a rabbit warren, for a host to return. It can be carried on footwear & clothing only adds to how effective its spread can be. The silent death.

That's a great story, riohog, all players were in the right place at the very right time.
