  1. I think I will be getting one of this type in the future, hopefully nice and steady fairly easy to train and none of the bloody retrieving issues I sometimes get with mine at the moment.
  2. Just seems to make sense on paper, but in real life could be a lot different.
  3. Is anyone bringing on a lab based lurcher at the moment? I'm interested in this type of lurcher for lamping/ ferreting think it would be a useful cross for the rabbiting game. Any info on the cross would be helpful.
  4. As far as I'm aware there are no smithfields being bred in the UK. But I think there are supposedly a few strains of lurchers with Smithfield in their make up still being bred but not really sure if this is true or not. I'm sure more knowledgable people will comment with a lot more info than me.
  5. My dog isnt possessive with anything except rabbits and then it's only sometimes. When I walk through the door at home he's straight to a toy and basically shoving it in my hand he's recal is good when out and about but sometimes when ferreting or lamping he buggers off with the rabbit and tries to bury it. Some nights no issues and retrieves perfect He is not possessive over food but won't touch it unless told to if I don't tell him to eat it he just follows me around.
  6. Going back to what J Darcey posted I changed recal whistle.I started using my fox call the black plastic type that u can bite down on to change the pitch this helped and when the dog comes back I ignored the catch he had and just made fuss of the dog for a while then when the dogs ready take it from him. I hope this helps I totally understand how frustrating this problem is.
  7. If there wasn't a need for full time professional rabbit catchers I guess there wouldn't be any full time professional rabbit catchers.
  8. I live in the South West of England and rabbits breed virtually all year so with your ethical stance no rabbits would be hunted ever. It's a nice idea Kevin but most people live in the real world.
  9. Casso can you explain what you mean. I find what you say interesting but don't really understand how it relates or would stop the dog burying it's catch. Sorry to high jack the thread a bit Ideation but I had/have the same problem. If I don't keep on top of it with Skycats tug training it all goes pear shaped again especially working away for up to 28 days at a time. I get the dog retrieving fine then leave for work again come home and have to start from scratch again.
  10. I think it's a much under used option for training for the lamp good for everything trenchfoot says and can also help with retrieving.
  11. Does anyone use a flirt pole for training purposes?
  12. Try using a Flirt pole but take it easy. Not many people tend to use this equipment but can be very useful.
  13. Something like that Truther I'm not a very good shot with catapult. What I meant was use the good advice given so that rules yours out Truther and be calm and patient. Most lurchers I know and the 2 I have owned both with beddy blood have Hunted on thrown a deaf un as pups and been hard-work. But stick with it and all will come good eventually. Or blind it with an aniseed ball its your call jesscal. Sorry forgot the patronising LOL at the end. Lol.
  14. Be patient and try to keep calm my beddy bull grey was a nightmare up until a month or so ago now he doesn't hunt up and retrieves. He was that bad he used to feck off with any rabbit he caught and went and hid it. Quite often I thought about giving up on him but he is doing fine now. He is 2 1/2 years old. As mad as it seems he basically changed over night .
  15. I never walk the dog up to squatters just slip him. Yes he walked over some and didn't even see some at all. But now he will stalk up to them and picks them up before they run for it or waits until they move. He knows now if the beam is on there's something at the end of it but be prepared to get seriously pissed off.
  16. So you def need Saluki in the mix for stamina.
  17. Can you train/exercise a dog to have good stamina or is bred?
  18. Maybe give the dog this season see how it goes. It might surprise u.
  19. You get after it then Millet I can't fault you. To be honest I'm quite happy being out 2,3 hours lamping but if out for longer not a problem. I have no targets but just enjoy it.
  20. 40/50 squatters I'd be lucky to see that many rabbits a feckin season never mind a night.
  21. It doesn't really matter if they stalk or not just boils down to getting out there and giving the dog a go, and sometimes it brings a smile to your face.
  22. Tiny 7 how many squatters do you see when your out?
  23. Only stalk up to squatting rabbits not ones that run, even I can see that would be a massive fault lol.
  24. He's 2 bird it was a bit tongue in cheek comment. I've gone back to basics with him and hopefully this next season we'll come good.
