  1. get rid of the crap ones (waits for the fallout)
  2. a drop net is a longnet, that is set out raised on poles, normally left set in the "up" position for a few nights, once the rabbits leave the warrens and go out to feed, a string/rope etc is pulled and the nets drop to the floor, now its the same as a longnet, you'd still need to be present
  3. I was'ent going to reply to this, as it seems to me, if I said it was black, you'd say it was white, but, yes gas is a way of controlling rabbits, but if you have ever worked for london underground, you'd know that you cant just take anything onto their land/lines unless it has been passed with COSHH assesments, plus loads more paperwork to boot, health and safety tests longer than a bit of string, we can't even use a mouse trap, as they havent been passed, yes it gets infuriating, as sometimes we know the best way to deal with a particular pest, but if it ain't on their list, it aint getting
  4. would that be a wise move when there are still kits? i know it works normally but is there not a possibility she would eat more kits? have you ever thought that she's eating the kitts because they are "flesh" as all that is available is dry food, nursing jills need fresh meat, your going to get those that say they have reared young on dry alone, if the kitts are still young, then they are suckling milk, and once older, even with eyes still shut they will "sniff out" meat
  5. I would'ent worry too much this year, its next year that you may need to seperate them, at the moment I have two snipped hobs that share one court, get on fine together throughout the year, although they do rag each other, but another four hobs all in seperate cages, as they will draw blood fighting another male
  6. I have both the killgerm, and the cheaper e bay alternative, and you can see the difference not only in quaility, but also size the e bay ones cost me around £17
  7. as for sawdust sticking to the bare rabbit, I use a very large dog bowl in the court, rabbit gets skinned and chopped into chunks, and yes, when they dive in and grab a piece it gets covered in woodchip, but watching them, they shake the meat, simular to a dog with a rat, to shake of the woodchip as they eat each piece, however, a few have learnt that if they eat from the bowl, thats not a problem maybe once a week the will get a whole rabbit, gutted but with jacket on,
  8. Is it not if you caught enough during the season? TC the clue is in my signiture "pest control officer", so next time we get asked to clear rabbits from the railway tracks, as the digging is causing subsidence of the embankments, I should tell my bosses, sorry its the wrong time of year, as for not being able to talk about "other people" I was referring to huntinglife members that come out with me on most trips, have never heard them complain but thats leading off the point, I was just trying to say, you'll always have those that do, and those that dont, you'll get those
  9. Im getting fed up viewing posts that look like they have been writtern on a mobile phone, and need to be read a few times, to try figuring out what they say, yes I know some people will say its just bad english, or that their schools were crap, but if thats the case, surely its a good reason to download a spell checker, and yes before members start posting quotes of my odd post with a mistyped word, one or two wrongly spelt words are understandable, compared to whole sentances so, as the rules state, no text talk, I will start deleating posts without warning, that I deem to hard to read
  10. yes, otherwise you would have to say the same about any "pest species", should we stop killing rats/mice because they have young, do shooters stop shooting woodies, as they may have young in the nest, what about drey poking, you'll always get the for and against argument, I can understand that those that ferret only for sport, and have small areas of permission, always use the explanation, that it will spoil it for the winter months, but for those of us, that are lucky to either have larger permissions, or do it as part of our job will ferret all year if need be, the same goes for the other pe
  11. mate, there is nothing wrong with ferreting all year round, same as me, your landowner has expressed his concerns and wants them cleared, definatly carry on ferreting, it'll keep you your permission, I would however start in the morning, rather than evening, try and pair up with another ferreter and get some jills down there, Ive always found hobs to be a bit slow in the summer, also having a partner means more eye's looking for appearing ferrets, as you say, you can hear thumping, but no blood or fur on the hobs, they may not be venturing far enough into the warren, get the jills in
  12. rather than mince, just buy chicken legs multi pack, chop into chunks with an axe and feed,
  13. if you was to remove all dry food, and only leave rabbit, I could gurantee she'd start eating meat,
  14. think you'll find the laws changed now, true they still need to control, but if the damage is to other land, they cannot be held responsable any more
  15. neck pulling/dragging is normal ferret behaviour
  16. the hole/slit is made by it getting punched, then its pulled apart, so each hole/slit is potentially very sharp, also as ferts love to climb, having the mesh that way around, means the thinnest point of the "diamond shape" is at the bottom, if you imagine a claw/toe in a hole, with a fert hanging on, the toe will get drawn down into the mesh, a bit like a gullotine, I would advise taking it off and turning it 45 degrees, so the diamond shape runs left to right, thus wider on the bottom... failing that replace it, Ive got spare mesh here if you need some
  17. reckon you want a Eco friendly BioHaven forum then, this is a HUNTING FORUM
  18. don't want to put a downer on a really nice cage, but is that EML (expanded metal lathe) on the bottom two sections, reason I ask, used to work with the stuff, as its punched out on a die machine, the inside edges of each hole/split in unfinished, used to cut my hands to buggery, could slice a ferts toe straight off
  19. where's that come from, never had a prob with silvers
  20. if you use a digital camera, go into its menu, and stick it on the lowest resolution setting, makes them computer friendly,
  21. meat and more meat exactly, fresh meat has all the supplements in already, no need for shop bought stuff, as for cat biscuit , its a ferret, buy ferret biscuit
  22. neck pulling is just the hormones, they drag anything back to the nest, even each other, had it loads of times with jills having litters in the court, as long as theres no other ferrets in with them, Id just keep a eye on them for now, sometimes what we see as fighting, is normal ferret behaviour
  23. never had a problem with anymore than rabbit and dry, would'ent go with the cat food
