  1. So glad you had her insured: was it a clean break? If it was then there's no reason why she shouldn't run again fine. Another remedy to give her on top of the arnica is Comfrey, which is sometimes known as Knitbone as it is supposed to help bones heal better and faster. Give her some of that as well: you never know! Available in tabs from health food shops etc
  2. Wheaten xDeerhound: now that's an interesting cross: how big is she?
  3. Incredible shots: just look at the one with the stoat literally flying through the air after the bunny: I wonder if it caught it.
  4. Couldn't agree more: OK so they might not have the take off speed of other types of lurcher but I've seen Reem leap into the air and pounce into the middle of a nettle bed on a rabbit he has marked: just like a fox out mousing LOL There's a lot more to the Saluki than a lot of people think and IMO their hunting instinct is second to none.
  5. Great read: I know what you mean about lessons LOL Sometimes those lessons just keep on needing to be learned:
  6. Just keep dribbling luke warm water through the eye: use a rag or anything if you haven't got a plastic syringe (minus needle of course). Dribble the water from the far corner of the eye so that it runs towards the nose, and gently hold back the eye lids one at a time: you'll get loads of muck out like that> should be done as soon as possible every time the dog has been to ground.
  7. It's far more likely that the dog is injured, but probably a torn muscle, damaged tendon or a trapped nerve: get the dog to a greyhound back man to get her checked over. A dog injured like that will still run, it just won't really try as it is in pain.
  8. Who says that Saluki types can't ferret! Reem is out of a 7/8 Saluki 1/8 Grey bitch to a dog that is probably at least half Saluki.
  9. 13 is 13: you can only catch what is there. Sir Ted is looking grand LOL
  10. Well, it could have been worse: 2 young Saluki types out ferreting together: in fact they worked very well together, both marked well and we were really lucky to get a couple of free running rabbits as well: not usual for us: guess the gales blew a couple of nets off LOL Reem did gaze wistfully over the open fields from time to time, no doubt hoping to see a big rabbit out there, but no such luck. We even took a short cut over a huge rape field in the hope of finding one, but they are off this land at the moment: wind in the wrong direction. Reem's camo colouring blended well with A's jacket
  11. Small cage at night: most dogs won't mess in their own bed. And if it does then at least there's no mess around the house!
  12. I wouldn't say mine get 20% veg with their meat, but per dog it works out at about 1/2 a medium sized carrot, a couple of small cabbage leaves, or the outers of half a dozen brussel sprouts, 1/4 apple, half a stick of celery and all summer they've been getting french and runner beans, probably about one each per meal. Cauliflower, spinach beet, green and red peppers minus the seeds, a pear sometimes and so on. Only things I don't feed are raw parsnip etc, and NEVER potato or onion raw, and not if I can help it cooked either. As I said before, I don't get all worried if they don't have ve
  13. I find it amazing that people are writing books on BARF (biologically appropriate raw food) and Raw Meaty Bones: talk about wanting to confuse the readers! To me BARF and RAw Meaty Bones are one and the same type of feeding: natural! Mine get a mixture: they will get minced rabbit bones and all plus minced veg and fruit, on top of which I'll chuck a couple of pieces of chicken carcase or a piece of breast of lamb (ribs). Sometimes they'll get some chunks of fresh tripe or some minced beef, plus the chicken carcase, or breast of lamb or whatever. It all depends on what I have availabl
  14. Condolences mate: I would think that it's happened to all who have decent dogs, whether running or earth dog. Horrible when it happens: like has already been said umpteen times: only the very good die at their job. Better to have lived one day as a tiger than a lifetime as a mouse. (Can't remember where that saying comes from but how true.)
  15. Unfit: have you actually ever seen a well reared, well educated Saluki or Saluki cross work? The only thing wrong with most dogs of this type is the owners. these dogs need a lot of freedom to learn, and understanding and patient owner who will allow the dog the time to learn, and the ground and game for the dog to learn on. Most Saluki types are ruined by owners who only take them out and slip them on game: and as for tearing everywhere at 90 miles and hour: all I can say is that you can't have seen a decent one working: like I said: most dogs of this type never get the chance to learn
  16. Tell me about it! More like months now: went out last night: grass land hard but runnable for sensible dogs, drilling: no way! Watched my dog trying to run on what must have seemed to her like rolling rubble: dog couldn't get a foothold: luckily this is her third season and she didn't put much effort in on that one: called it a night with half a dozen in the bag off grass.
  17. The thing is that a dog with Bull in it is high drive, high pain threshold so it will still run even with flat, sore feet or whatever. But sooner or later that dog will go very lame: how many dogs with flat feet are still running and doing the business at 6 or 7 years old? I've seen plenty of Saluki crosses with crap flat feet too, and they don't last the distance either in terms of years: like has already been said: good Saluki types have long, oval shaped feet with well arched toes and their running style is completely different to that of a Bull cross which hits the ground much harder
  18. Had one many years ago which had a crumbling hip: took the head off, and she didn't walk on 4 legs for a year despite swimming physio etc. Then she put it down again and was fine thereafter: I didn't keep her as she was bad news around other dogs, but I'd say that in a terrier it wouldn't be a problem.
  19. Young bitches that have not yet had a season often get something called puppy vaginitis: sometimes the discharge comes as a big gloop of stuff: unless it smells bad: I know, you have got to take a sniff LOL, then don't worry about it. AS long as the dog isn't straining to pee (cystitis), as long as there is not red flecks in the pee (bladder stones) and the dog is in good health etc, then it is probably puppy vaginitis and will clear up when she has her first season. Another good reason not to have bitches spayed before their first season as even the bladder and urinary tract need to matu
  20. Great to see them doing so well: do watch out not to feed them too much at any one time: 5 or even 6 very small meals a day is best, and little if any carbs (cereals). So no cheap puppy food: they look great but obviously still have a lot of catching up to do. Good luck with them.
  21. You don't say if the pads are sore as in worn thin through too much running on hard/bad ground, or cracked through overexposure to water or wahat exactly. If the dog is continually working in wet conditions this will soften the pads: not good. Make sure the dog's feet are dry when it is home/kenneled. Sudacream is OK for certain conditions: like cracked pads etc but I'd prefer to use something like Padsanol (get it from the greyhound megastore online). Also make sure that there is enough animal fat in the dog's diet and that the diet is of good quality. Dogs fed on cheap cereal bas
