  1. So very sorry to hear of this: like you said, your one consolation is that she didn't suffer. RIP young dog.
  2. BARF means simply: Bones and Raw Food, or if you prefer, Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. In other words: feed your dog meat and bones. If you can't find a supplier which sells meat etc for dogs, then go to your butcher and ask him for off cuts, chicken carcases etc. Tescos etc often sell chicken wings very cheap. Buy their cheapest minced meat, once a week some liver; (that's cheap too), fresh mackeral (very cheap and feed raw and whole once a week) If you can't get enough meaty items then supplement with a complete food but don't feed both raw and complete at the same meal as they nee
  3. 17": he'll never catch a rabbit on top but for diving about in the brambles and hedgebottoms he has the edge.
  4. You'll need a damn sight more than one ferret in there by the sounds of things. As Stubby said: loads of helpers, long nets down both side of the hedge and as many purse nets as possible even to the extent of haning them in the hedge like mini stop nets: I've found that the rabbits tend to hole hop in these situations so unless you can net every single hole it is a waste of time. As many ferrets as possible to panic the rabbits into bolting where they don't really want to go: good luck!!
  5. It's not often I get the chance to sit down and watch a DVD from start to finish, and to be honest not many films hold my interest for more than a few moments as so many hunting type films tend to get a bit boring after a while, so I popped this DVD into the player with a certain amount of caution! An hour and a half later I'd sat and watched A Few Ferrets More all the way through without having once wanted to get up and do something else! It starts with a detailed and excellent description of various ferret types, their housing and feeding requirements and why different types of ferre
  6. Toad in the hole: then hand LOL
  7. Rock hard here too: trying to put some pics up at the moment: keeps doing the flood control thingy! At least the top common is relatively smooth turf: the only place I dare work a dog at the moment.
  8. He missed one in the hedge bottom that scragged the net on brambles but wasn't about to let go of this one: The next day we had a couple of hours on the common: ground rock hard, couldn't even begin to get the pegs in so just laid the nets over the holes and relied on the dogs to stop the rabbits. Got us half a dozen and 4 squeakers which is a shame: not even a mouthful at that age! Dogs worked well as usual and we didn't have to dig, which would have been impossible without a JCB. Even bolted a couple of toads that were hiding to ground: they looked a bit thin and parched: if we don'
  9. Been out for some dog food a couple of times over the last 2 days: myxie's hit us bad all year but now we are seeing healthy rabbits again thank God! Took little Cricket (Border/Whippet 8 months old) to see what he made of the job: I'd have to say you'd have thought he was purpose bred LOL Dead steady, biddable and once that first rabbit had bolted he was marking like a pro. I always knew he was very intelligent, but this proved it. From simply bushing with the other dogs up until now, a few hours ferreting has turned him into a driven and purposeful animal.
  10. Canny pics as always: where was Little Ted?
  11. They're looking good: nothing like getting them out with their parents to show them the ropes.
  12. Those are the saddest pics of pups I've seen in a long while, and I am sorry if that offends the breeder. I once rescued a litter of malnourished pups and they weren't as bad as these. What have they been wormed with? Over the counter wormer? And if they have only just been wormed for the first time then that is way too late. These pups are in pitiful condition: have they been kept warm enough, dry enough, had access to fresh clean water at all times, been fed often enough (4 times per day at least at this age). I'm so angry at seeing these pics I am shaking. Call me a soft idiot if

  14. You've obviously found the problem: I'd say she has strained her wrist: hopfully not too badly. Wrist problems are bad news and can take a long long time to heal. If there is no heat or swelling around the wrist then it is just pulled ligaments not ruptured. Stand dog's leg in cold water a couple of times a day or run cold hose on it. No exercise at all except walking on lead. If you can get some Bone Radiol then brush it into the joint and around it, no more than twice a week: its very strong and acts as an irritant (in the past they used similar stuff to blister horses with tendon probl
  15. The main problem is that you've got the pup too late for it to easily learn to be confined in a cage. At 16 weeks the pup has already got used, and the wiring in its brain is almost set: meaning that whatever you try and do different with it will be very hard for it to adjust to. If the pup had only ever been kennelled, not taken out for walks etc it will be like a badly retarded child: pups need to learn very young 4-6 weeks what they can and cannot eat: they learn by practicing on everything they can get their mouths round. At 16 weeks old you pup, if it hasn't been able to learn all t
  16. 6 to 8 weeks for a broken toe. UP to 12 weeks for a sprained joint, which obviously includes toes! Ligaments and tendons take ages to come right as their blood supply is rubbish. Massage Bone Radiol into the joint with an old toothbrush: gently and don't use more than twice a week: its powerful stuff.
  17. Tendon and or muscle damage: vet won't do any good other than to five anti-inflammatories and advice rest. Get dog to greyhound vet. Just because a dog doesn't yelp when you examine it doesn't mean it's not in pain. Deep seated dull pain doesn't make them yelp but the cause can be just as damaging if not more so than a stinging cut.
  18. Good one: better to get one and go home than ruin it with possible failure later on. I always take a first time lamping lurcher home after it has caught one rabbit when we're starting: that high note ending reaps big rewards later on.
  19. Cracking looker too takman: like her a lot.
  20. The little red bitch is lurcher to lurcher for umpteen years. Quite a bit of Saluki in there: her grandfather was Merlin/Eve lines, Del Tomlin's Luke on his dam's side etc, etc: all the usual suspects. Her dam was out of a little rough coated lurcher of unknown breeding and her sire a Saluki/Grey. Her half sister out of the same bitch was a better dog all round, but sadly died coursing a few years back. Littlish is good but not as good: Ishtar was very good on everything. This one hasn't seen hares like the other one, but she takes some beating on the lamp and rabbiting in general.
  21. Lovely pics of dogs playing Dave: mine are pretty rough looking too but there's never any malice or harm done: touch wood, so far so good LOL Little thing of 22": takes anything, like a rocket: only downside is a thin skin: rips easily. Heart of a lion though: I just wish she wouldn't try and tackle cover as hard as she does: she's beginning to look like Frankenstein's monster due to all the old scars on her legs: by the time she was 2 years old she'd had at least a dozen stapled cuts on her. Doh!
  22. If he's been eating a lot of sheep's wool that will bind him: he should have got rid of it by now though.: few bits of raw liver usually go straight through a dog: try that.
  23. I paid "20 for a second hand one (barely used) a few years ago: you need the box part of it to keep the dog in the right place: and in them there are 2 coils as opposed to one. I should know as we've just taken ours apart and fitted the coils etc into a permanent dog bed place under some shelves in the sitting room: the Porta Mag box takes up so much room otherwise. Brilliant things though.

    Favorite Cheese?

Manchego: hooked on the stuff. Also St Agur closely followed by a really good Brie.
