    Yesterday morning I decided to call a halt to a small after the pub party involving my brother his wife my wife and a bottle of vodka, it was around 5am when I carried the missus to bed, so when the door was being knocked down at around 8-30 my whole body screamed "no!" Gav and Bruce had travelled down from North Devon it was to be a nice social day on the farm up the road, I had lamped it last week and had decided to ferret a large hedge dividing 2 sheep fields where I saw a good number of rabbits run.     The coneys certainly ain't dull pal! I almost cry reading some reports on here with pictures of nice clean buries in the middle of short grass fields. Terrier gets pretty much wherever a rabbit can get. She looks a hell of a state after a good mooch in the brambles though, covered in blood from where her ears get nicked. She's pushed countless rabbits out when we're mooching but my lurcher's too thick to learn to work with her effectively. The 50% terrier in him gets too much and he's always trying to get in after her. Even if I hold him on a slip away from the hedge he's that wound u

    Bit of all sorts really mate, some woodland ground buries, large arable with big hedge rows and some hilly land too, 1 farm we do has a bit of all of it had a few rabbits off there this season

    You sound a decent lad mate and decency and manners count for a lot. As said you'll get knockbacks but at some point a door will open that will open another and you'll find it easier to get permission once you've got a bit under your belt. Keep knocking on the doors, being polite and once you get your bit do a decent job, let the farmer know what you've done after each trip, word will spread and the snowball will start.     A lot of the sets we do mate are in big old hedgerows 100's of yrds long with hundreds of holes, like I said already only get the box out when really nessacary, but wouldn't put a ferret in without a collar on in these big hedges.

    As vin said, never used a locator in my youth, we used to poach around the edge of the local golf course, one place that always held a few rabbits was a little bury under an old oak right in the middle of the fairway, we'd get there early, nets on, ferret in quick as poss one lad on constant look out for the golfers, rabbits out ferret out and back over the hedge a couple of times had to run for it whilst the ferret was still in, watching for her/him through the hedge and the golfers were swinging away down the fairway Use a locator now but rarely get the box out, I'm not a big fan of digg

    My old mates bitch susie, the first lurcher I ever saw run I grew up withe her and she gave me the bug, Collie greyhound, I would have her in a heart beat and I would have my mate back too, miss the pair of them, but I've got some great memories

    Nice one mate good wite ups and for me the dog looks well, had a walk out last night with mine and brothers pup we had good conditions down here last night gale force and rain managed 7 altogether 2 to the pup and 5 to mine some good runs on some nice ground

    Some good posts on here lads, A couple of things I've noticed in marking, is dogs mark in different ways, I've seen terriers mark very obviously ( my jack russel is very obvious when she marks) and others can be subtle ( a friends terrier will stop at a hole and stand, he will not always stay there for a long time as he moves on) you need to know your dog and the way they mark. I agree with Kittlerox in that I've got a Beddy whip and a Jrt, also ferret with others with different lurchers and terriers, if I was only going to have 1 of my 2 for ferreting ( it seems like this lad may have to

    3/4 whip 1/4 beddy 19tts Bitch on left first x beddy whip, bitch on right 3/4 whip 1/4 beddy, the 3/4 is quicker and turns on a sixpence , recall is good but retrieve has to be worked on, the first x hits any cover not as quick but is really driven.     Very well said, catching has never been the be all and end all for me, I've always loved the countryside and what it holds, I love the rivers and sea too and your right it does make you feel instantly relaxed and happier once your out and walking some nice land, catching is then a bonus

    Go out alone, with a mate with dogs and another ferreting or ratting, will take friends who want to see what it's about who are genuinely interested (on permission), as a kid was the same. I love to be out just on my own with the dog or a couple of ferrets, don't see any problem either way. I know what you mean about the competition thing though seems there aren't many bad dogs around , wish mine was better in some areas, retrieve mainly, would never pretend she's anything better than she is, she put's a few rabbits in the bag most times we go out and thats ok for me, your always gonna get b

    My hands are red raw from yesterday mate, the bit we ferreted yesterday we were waiting till the frost had killed it off a bit as it's a bit of a jungle, the frost hasn't came yet so we just got on with it, at this rate we may get a frost in april

    In Exeter mate, heard there was a sprinkling on the moors but I've not even woken to ice on the car yet...... Ideation: I didn't ferret much after end of feb last year as we started to find young in them, never been a summer hunter, just don't expect to find 3 with young in them at the end of December.

    Mines nervy too mate sounds very similar, she's a lovely dog around people and kids but really nervous of other dogs. Good luck mate I'm hoping mine will come through as she gets older with more careful socialising.

    I can't remeber ever the winter being this warm, we're yet to have a frost down here in Devon, and yesterday we had 3 rabbits carrying young. Do you think the seasons matter anymore as by the looks of it we've now got year round breeding............

    Cheers mate, I agree, this farm has alot of sheep on it, you'd look a right dick if the farmer turns up and your dogs chasing his flock around the field

    good write up mate and a new friendship formed......... I have similar trouble with my little bitch she run up to dogs ( never people) and bark then run off straight away, it does my head in, she's fine working with other dogs, but I keep her on the lead in public places.
