  1. I guess in theory a 30-06 has a longer effective range than a .243, but how often do loonies manage to hit people at long range? Bar a few ex marine snipers in the US, most nutjobs like to get up close and personal. As for "overkill", well, don't get me started!
  2. Was she wearing them at the time? I've heard it called a "bulldog chewing a wasp" on more than one occasion!
  3. With the tightest gun laws in the world, nutters still get hold of guns. If it weren't guns, it would be a car, or a bus, or a knife, or a baseball bat. All of these things kill more people in a week than legally held firearms do in a year in the UK. Ok, the baseball bat was hyperbole, but you get the point, although I'd bet more people are killed with baseball bats than guns, especially legally held ones, every year. Now tell me again the logic behind them controlling the number and type of guns I can own? How exactly does it make things safer? I don't think I could do more damage wit
  4. Oh, just as I was warming to the subject too! or maybe all three?
  5. Well, I'm not so sure about that. I think that all regulation and licencing achieves is to ensure that only criminals have firearms. Obviously it's not reached that stage yet with S1, but look at handguns. Does the fact that they are banned stop criminals from owning and carrying them? Of course it doesn't. All it does is punishes the massive majority of lawful shooters who lose their right to enjoy their hobby. Frankly, once the police have decided that you are safe and responsible, and can be trusted to have a firearm, why should they then seek to curtail that right? Why shou
  6. I'm assuming some of that was aimed at me too? Well, I have this strange foible, I think it's quite important for me to understand as best I can the rules that govern what I am, and am not, allowed to do with a firearm. I'm quite fond of shooting, and I'd rather not lose the right to own and use firearms because I was ignorant of the law. Ignorantia_juris_non_excusat So, if you want to go and do illegal stuff, and risk losing your certificate, which I obviously believe that you have because you know SO much about firearms and the practical application of the law as it affects the legit
  7. Paulus, as far as I can ascertain all forces still require one permission letter at renewal for an open ticket. It's to prove good reason.
  8. Does it come with charging adaptor etc.?
  9. LED will give very little red light, That's part of the reason they're so much more efficient than incandescents. The halogen should give you a good amount of IR.
  10. Why it's illegal is kind of irrelevant. I think the answer lies mainly in the fact that deer have always been considered a regal beast, and their hunting the prerogative of the rich or royal. The deer act sets out a minimum calibre, and that is that. Get caught shooting one with something smaller and you WILL lose your certificates (outside the obvious exemptions for HD) The OP raised a question which I think could only be adequately answered by looking at the legal aspects. As a point of law, shooting them with a .22LR is not defined as inhumane. The law in this case makes no value ju
  11. It's not the calibre of the gun, it's the calibre of the nut behind the butt! Any of the UK deer legal calibres will kill a deer if you put the bullet in the right place. Some calibres might cause a bit more meat damage than others, though that's mainly down to speed of the projectile. It's a trade off between velocity, trajectory and energy delivery. A flatter trajectory from a faster bullet can make hitting the right spot easier, but then a light, fast bullet might not do enough damage to kill quickly, or alternatively it might do a massive amount of damage. Everybody has their o
  12. Si, Davy, I'm so sorry but I'm going to have to pull out. I've just lost my job and can't afford the fuel to get up there, and need to spend the time job hunting. I'm totally gutted, been looking forward to it for ages!
  13. They might want to see permission letters, they might not. It's best to have them to hand anyway, just in case they do ask. Just have them on the table next to you where he can see them and he probably won't bother to ask. As for opening the cert, write a quick note to go in with your form saying something along the lines of "Having held firearms for over ten years, I believe that I am safe and capable of assessing ground, and would therefore appreciate if you would remove the restrictive territorial condition from my certificate." After ten years they should have no problem removing t
  14. Easy enough to mistake the pancreas for part of the liver under poor light conditions, they sit close together and don't always separate when removed from the beast. The description, spongy and grey, definitely sounds pancreatic to me.
  15. If you're going to splash the cash, spend a little bit more to get your mitts on a swivel/tilt version. The bipod should make it much easier to attain good levels of accuracy for a novice. As for attachment, if your S410 already has a sling on it then it probably has QD studs already. If so then just whip the front sling connection off, attach the bipod and then re-attach the sling to the bipod. It makes more sense when you've got a bipod in your hand. So yes, well worth the money, should make your 410 into a lethal tool!
  16. And the answer to "would you" is obviously "not in a million f#####g years". Forget the arguments about lethality of the .22LR. Yes, it can and will kill much bigger creatures than a Roe deer, and many will have been cleanly and humanely taken with one over the years. The only thing at issue here is legality. If you shoot a deer with a .22LR, other than for humane dispatch (or in certain circumstances in an enclosed park where the animals are classed as "farmed" then you will be committing several offences, under at least two different acts of parliament. You could certainly be
  17. Sounds like two of them were already approved then, no other way they could turn it round that quickly!
  18. Then the person designing the process had a major brain fart and missed a fairly obvious pitfall. Anyone who has worked with metallic materials, in particular with softish alloys, will well know the problem of work hardening.
  19. The Weirauch mod is sold as an air rifle mod. Whilst it "may" be ok on a .22LR, if anything goes wrong with the mod and it gets damaged, don't expect any help from the manufacturer. You can get a decent LR mod for £40 or so, why risk breaking your air rifle mod?
  20. IMHO any round that is split from the box represents a failure of the manufacturers QC procedure. Some rounds split on firing, and this will probably have no adverse effect (note... probably) but I would personally not consider chambering a round with a split neck. The case expands against the chamber wall to provide a seal during firing, any crack is likely to cause a weak spot and may mean an escape rearwards of hot gases. I don't need to point out what's directly to the rear of the bolt on firing! What I don't understand is why they can't spin the priming compound in to a fully formed c
  21. 9114 now. Out of interest mate, what illness does your cousin suffer from?
  22. My thoughts exactly, however you can of course have your .22wmr semi auto, but not the hmr. This is true. My WMR is a semi, though I am thinking of swapping it for a bolt action as the longer range round lends itself more to a nice, accurate, consistent bolt action. I have an LR semi which is great for whacking large numbers of bunnies quickly, the WMR tends to get used for more deliberate shots so the semi isn't as much of an advantage.
  23. If the .17 HMR is working for you, why bother to change it? Normally I'd advocate the WMR. It's a better round. More downrange energy and a bigger pill so less wind effect. But if you are perfectly happy with how your .17 shoots then I don't see you gaining much by changing just for the sake of changing!
  24. You can get an HW100 for £300? Even rifle only, that's the best made, most accurate PCP short of a Daystate or Logun for second hand HW95 money. Madness!
