Laughing my nads off at this reply walshie! Lol . I don't know much at all about ridgebacks, but they don't look like your typical african type of dog. Were they developed by european settlers from the dogs they took with them?

Far too many people take working dogs too seriously. Apart from pest control, in certain situations, no-one these days needs a dog, or two or three or more, to provide food for the table. Everything now seems to be catch as much as you can, whatever the weather, ground conditions etc, to outdo everyone else. For me, to go out for a few hours watching a dog or two pushing a rabbit around a small wood for half an hour or so before catching it, is far more enjoyable than walking for miles at night with the lamp and catching 10,15 or so rabbits. Lads, I had dogs off nimrodel lines about 25-30 years ago, brilliant animals. Keep on getting em out there, and shove it up to the guys that keep on about the 'whippets are too fragile etc etc etc brigade'

Not even if Brian Plummer did it ? I think him and his writings are responsible for the majority of people trying to start their dogs far too early,... and, like I said, anyone that starts their pups on rats deliberately at 16 weeks is a clown, simple

Probably a bit contentious here, but I think anyone that deliberately sets out to hunt rats with a 16 week old pup is a f***ing clown, simple. Don't care what reason/excuse they come out with

No, no pup is going to lose speed by getting them out and about at a young age. All pups, bred for working or otherwise, need to get out and about, but he was RUNNING IT AT 5, 6 AND SEVEN etc on the lamp, at 5 months, that WILL run the speed off a pup. That's it, I'm away to walk the camel

I get what you're saying, and you've sort of agreed with me, running a pup too young WILL take away some of it's adult potential speed. And running a 12 month old pup on two rabbits is a completely different ball game to running a heavy 5 month old pup on 5, 6 or seven rabbits a few times well brfore it's ready

speeds not every thing, knowing you id say it was heart. the pup will get stronger and faster,id say once again you have not learnt by your mistakes,why don't you be honest and say what you really want, alsatian x or are you scared you might lose a few fans,knowing what to do and putting it into practice is two different things.. Mistakes I feel come in different views I think choosing wrongly mistake to much to soon mistakes ,but trigg here states the dog lacks a gear ,it will gain speed has you say right up till around three yrs old ,but will this be enough I believe a mans take and belief

I'm with jukel123 on this one. I know there are all different crosses/types which have 'bossed' their owners, but you hear of this sort of thing very frequently with salukis and saluki crosses. And as jukel123 suggests, breeding from more trainable/obedient dogs is surely going to be beneficial

Good point there about camping. I was thinking of everyday use, and plinking etc, and hunting 2-3 days a week. Gonna go through ALOT of pellets AND air if that's what he intends. @ Sharback, you might want to consider the HW110, I've had one since last november in .177. Incredible accuracy, ultra reliable and consistent, and I'm getting over 120 shots per charge with h+n ftt and jsb exacts 4.52, and 130 with AA fields 4.52. Hope that might be a little help for you

Most whippet pups will lose a bit of weight over the first week or so of going to a new home, unless they're very greedy. Well that's what I've found over the years. Her appetite should start getting better from now on, and she'll start filling out a bit more. I don't think daniel cain was being flippant, just the way most things come across on the web, especially THL! Lol

There is always a young fella out there who doesn't have the advice he or she needs to continue in the sport and not only learn by his mistakes but can learn how to avoid and correct them .A book on any subject can help in many ways .I learned a lot in the beginning which was so long ago that I don't care to remember by reading up on the type of hunting I wanted to do and not just listen to a lot of old wives tales and bullshit info by word of mouth. .
