I know more than a few people that see hardly anything, when out in the countryside, even though I see plenty when I'm with them!! Lol. I think there are a few people on this site are the same.

I think it would be pretty easy for cats bigger than a lynx to remain hidden in the majority of the British countryside. How many times have most of us been surprised by deer etc breaking cover just yards away?
