  1. why take a month off at the start though why not just give us an extra month or an allowance to catch up? Oh id be quite happy at a months extension mate if that was on offer........i was kind off just replying to the debate on here... no having a go mate I for 1 would be all for extending the season till end of feb whether to shoot or just catch up I just don't beleive we need to stop shooting pheasant in october cause some shoots can't manage to produce mature birds

  3. A, been at this game a long time and yes I know the average height of the birds. B, what you call unsporting I may consider challenging but I would suggest that the type of cartridge used would be an indicator. C'     yes you made a statment and just like most other folk who claim the season should be set back when faced with the fact that it is the shoot/keepers fault the birds aren.t ready and that the age of the birds is the main factor as to their maturity rather than what month they are shot in then their argument falls faster
  4. thank you for the guide I'll be sure to bear that in mind come monday So back to your first statment why should reared bird shoots have to fall in line because in your opinion wild birds wont be ready or is it the case that after making your statment you realised that the only thing reared bird shoots need to do to have mature birds is put them to wood at a time that will ensure they will be properly mature come october?
  5. First yes we have a minimum cartridge size and on the highest drives recomend a minimum of 32g 4's though the cartridge most favour is jk6 in a 36g 4 and rc40's in a 4,those that bring unsuitable cartridges are supplied cartridges by the estate. Yes birds are pricked though we have an excellent team of picker ups that go far enough back to ensure the birds are picked and the drive is thoroughly swept though I do accept some will be missed as would be on many shoots The avarage height of the birds I wont' speculate on there high enough If your reasoning for the season to be changed is becaus
  6. my remit is to produce birds as challenging as possible the bag being irrelevant it gives my boss great pleasure to see his guests struggle with the height and yes cookie the birds here are beyond what most would consider reasonable but then for any shoot with big hills and valleys that isnt' hard. p's cookie I never said the guns couldn,t shoot what I did say was that the guns couldnt' hit my early october birds which is contary to your opinion and for someone as shoots so much and loads for hollands top 10 I am suprised you get to such poor shoots as cant' show a good early season bird
  7. I'm sorry but thats bollocks we start the 5th of oct and the birds have full tails and best even some of the top shots in the uk (first drive of the season went 350 shots for 19 birds)all that needs to happen is for keepers to do their job and get the birds in early enough to be mature before the start of the season I bet I could take more than 19 birds out of 350 shots top shots my arse . You got coco the clown as one the guns ATB Cookie course you could shame you'll no find out aint it
  8. I'm lucky there mate it's all private so we can concentrate on the sport and no worry too much about the bag, though we still have a bag expectation for the day Oh.....a walk in the park then........ LOL yeah I know mate can,t understand why I get so worried about it all

LOL I won't name names but there was some well known gents in the line, we ended on 340 for 2250 shots thank god for the partridge they brought the shot count back a bit but I thought I would have to show them every bird

  14. mostly Ive spent the morning regretting the vindaloo I had last night other than that I have followed my dream since a kid never lost sight of what I wanted and loved every minuite acheiving it, could I have done more well the answer would be yes but you cant' regret not having something you couldnt' have anyway.
  15. I had considered paying folks with dogs more than others but it would be dependant on me choosing as to whether the dog was worth paying for pretty soon you could find folks will bring any old pot licker and expect to be paid not so sure it is any different for shoots in the south re beaters all I know is my book is full till the end of the season guess it must be something other than the £25 that brings them back to me
  16. I know all that mate as i get it in the neck when the poults have to go up, i'm in the same boat with the big guys pumping out cheap shit and theres no way of competeing. But as you say everything has to go up but for some reason its the people who put the graft in for you that feel the pinch. I dont want to harp on a the youngsters but it seems nowadays you struggle to get them out there bed to do a hard days graft for decent money never mind out in the pissing rain all day for £25 quid. Facts are you've just got to love it for the joy of working your dog and look at the money as a bonus....i
  17. we averaged 10000 brace shot but on commercial it is all about the price per bird to be competitive you have to keep it close to the bone or folks buy else where as you know there are fixed costs that must be returned first like the birds, feed, fuel,keepers,machinery/vehicles,PLI,contractor costs for cover, rental (even though the estate is owned not tenanted the land has to be rented from the estate since I take agri land out of production) the list goes on and on try telling the boss you want to increase the bird cost when days are tough enough to sell at the moment especially after many sh
  18. I know what you mean lab but imagine if I gave all my beaters and pickers a rise of a £10 making them £35 and £40 respectively on 60 days we had 20 beaters 1 game cart man and 8 picker ups that would mean an increase in my budget of £290 per day or £17400 per season or put it another way I could have another underkeeper and keep the beaters costs as they are.
  19. 30 inch barrels will soon piss you off rough shooting mate (i'm 6'2" and it pisses me off after a day in the field you'll want to take a hacksaw to it ) and personally I wouldn't have a 20 if you already have a 12 since the possibility of an accident is too great, I wouldnt' go for a sbs if you can shoot an ou well so it would either have to be a ou 12 with 26 inch barrels or a miroku mk70 28bore
  20. Aye your right I am on another planet cause I'm the one who gets to say who does and who doesn't pick up here and fact is when we shot 60 days a year I never had call to look for picker ups they came to me and even with 480 places a year to fill (8 picker ups per day for 60 days) I still turned folks away Aye your right I am on another planet cause I'm the one who gets to say who does and who doesn't pick up here and fact is when we shot 60 days a year I never had call to look for picker ups they came to me and even with 480 places a year to fill (8 picker ups per day for 60 days)
