  1. Swanny mate, didn't mean to sound so snotty this morning but missing all them rabbits first time out is not good. Spend a month getting some fitness , then go out on a good night and look for some easy slips, if she kills a couple early on, call it a night , don't over do it. You want her to come home feeling confident and wanting more, then build up slowly. A month of fitness training might help her forget she can't fecking catch 'em.
  2. Didn't do well at all, caught 1, missed 17, it did shit and so did you. Missing 17 out of 18 will have worked wonders for its confidence ! I just hope it missed the first 17 and caught the last one. Get your head out your arse and think about what your doing.
  3. Had one killed in a wood, rabbit swerved at the last minute and went the other side of a post sized tree, dog was going the opposite side and took the rabbit just as they got to the tree. The dogs head went so far back it caved the back of its scull in, on its own shoulder blades, at least that's what vet reckoned. Now if you really want to do woods you should try a Harris hawk, along with the Goshawk they're made for the job .
  4. Not sure I'd shoot one, but I'd pull out all the stops to catch one. I don't think it's the end of the world environmentally, but is potentially disastrous for falconry.
  5. A 2005 audit recorded 2,271 non-native species in England , So one more is neither here or there.
  6. Why don't you double up and use a shotgun, you'll get even more !
  7. When a pup is mature enough to start, it's mature enough to run and catch on it's own. I've seen too many collisions to make doubling up worth the risk, plus all the other bad habits it causes.
  8. I've worked borders , pats ,fells, lakelands, russels, and a mate had both smooth and wire fox terriers plus crosses. All worked very well but they would never better a small springer. Anybody who has done any amount of cover bashing with terriers will know that once a terrier is head and shoulders down a hole it's blind and deaf, you've got to wade in and scruff the little bast, then you've finished with that patch and probably the next as well, because as soon as you but it down it's straight back. Anybody that says terriers are better than an average springer, have never seen an average spr
  9. the thing is dogs are judged on what they have caught and not what they have chased well and almost caught. a dog that goes out a couple of times a week will always look better than a dog that goes 6 nights a week at the begining of the night. catching large bags often, requires alot of heart in a dog. A good dog catches even if it only has half a chance, don't know if you've noticed but a good lamper seems to be very lucky, but it's making it's own luck. That's what makes it good.
  10. It's really not about numbers, if you've got a dog that makes the best of every opportunity then you've got a good un. Mike.
  11. The 47 I referred to earlier, was also notable in that the bitch only missed the 10th rabbit on it's way to the first 15. It's as much about the ground and weather conditions though, any good lamper will do well when everything falls into place on the same night. Mike.
  12. "A woman has received a life ban from dealing in animals after she admitted arranging to have the tails of nine puppies cut off. Caroline Hall, 40, of Laburnum Road, Humberstone, admitted at Market Harborough Magistrates' Court causing and permitting the tails of the Rottweiler puppies to be removed, contrary to section six of the Animal Welfare Act 2006. As well as the dealer ban, she was also fined £1,200 and ordered to pay £350 costs and a £15 court surcharge. In the case brought by the RSPCA, Hall also admitted providing false information to a veterinary surgeon for the purpose of havin
  13. I had a dog take 47 one night,a lot of them were out of the seat. Same dog on another memorable night took none, the only rabbit run, ran into a pole and killed itself. The best dog in the world can't catch rabbits that aren't there !
  14. Yes mate , at least in England it is. Make sure it is micro chipped and has the docking certificate, then you are all legal and above board. Mike.
  15. You can't go wrong if you bring it on right, Leonard doesn't keep anything that isn't top notch ,never mind breed from it.

    That told 'em,well said mate.
  17. A true example, one of the best spaniels I ever owned, a kennel dog ,12 years old.If I took it out working it couldn't walk for 3 days, if I kept it in the house it peed any where it liked, mainly on furniture, it would actually jump up on to the sofa for a piss. If I left it in the kennel when I took the other dogs out it would scream like a banshee and rip everything it could to bits. It had one last day out, while it sat contented beside me looking into the distance, bang ! the lights went out. I had tears in my eyes all the way home, but that dog was better off dead. Good post ma

  19. Rats and rabbits are only exempt from the hunting with dogs act if you have permission, if you don't they're the same as any other quarry .
  20. i get what you are sayin but my bitch is the first working dog i have from day one and i have been thought my share in shit dogs but she has learnt me a lot about hunting so she will stay with me untill i can see she is in pain and the time is right I've nothing against anyone keeping them on mate, but then I've nothing against anyone that chooses not to.
  21. I've rehomed and regretted it, I've kept them in retirement and regretted it, I've got two fell terriers 14 years old, can't wait for them to shuffle off. The only ones I haven't regretted are the ones I've put down . Working dogs aren't meant to be old, when did you ever see an old decrepid wild animal, and for folks that kill for a sport or pastime to criticise others that take responsibility for their working dogs once they've finished is hypercritical, after all one life is worth no more or less than any other, might only be a rabbit but it's the only life it's ever going to have. At least
  22. What you doing while she's stalking ? Don't just stand there, as soon as she starts to stalk, walk or jog into the rabbit and get it moving, jealousy will make her want to get there first eventually. Does she not take them out of the seat, stalking is usually a prelude to that.
