  1. I've worked in the pits, they are in for a real tough time , I wish them well and hope they get out sooner rather than later, when you've worked down there it's got to be your worst nightmare.
  2. What's a rabbit worth ? £2 ? 13 rabbits you've made a profit. I've always believed ferrets are worth far more than you can sell 'em for.
  3. Not sure what your suggesting, but I don't pass mine either,I've two fell terriers here both 14 years old. And you were the first to mention wasted rabbits, in my mind they are never wasted, just there to catch another day.
  4. A rabbit that gets out of the net should be caught by the dog, that's what its there for, if a dog cant catch a rabbit that's delayed by hitting the net then you need a new dog. And a rabbit that gets out of the net and gets away, while your dog mouths a well netted rabbit is also a wasted rabbit.
  5. Not got a ferreting dog now other than a gsp that marks and then stays where I put it. When I did have a ferreting dog it was expected to mark and then stay where put until something did a runner, was not allowed to touch rabbits in nets .To my mind a dog mouthing rabbits in nets is just a nuisance.
  6. It's just a normal big rat, Most rats don't live long enough or eat well enough to attain there full size. A well fed fully mature buck rat is pretty big, bigger than most people expect.
  7. I can't see the problem really, the bulls get a brilliant life prior to the ring. They are not one of the modern beef breeds, so without the bull fight they would cease to exist. It may be reared in a semi wild environment but it is not a wild animal. And believe me, I've seen far more cruelty over the years from members of our own ranks.
  8. My "idiot" comment was directed at Kyle, for saying that the crowd deserved it for being there. I don't agree with the Afghan war but to say our lads deserve all they get is, well I don't need to spell it out. And if the Spanish tried to tell us to stop ferreting because it was cruel, we'd tell them to feck off. The world would be a much better place if folk learned to keep their sticky fecking beaks out of other folks business .
  9. It obviously wasn't 3 days old then, was it.
  10. No shave , just snipped them off right up against the leg.
  11. In the days when it was legal to do it yourself, we just cut them of with scissors at about 3 days old and but them straight back with the bitch, no dressing.
  12. Too big for proper bushing and not a patch on a springer or cocker.
  13. If you want a well trained dog ,don't matter what breed , it needs to be fully trained before it ever sees game. Mike.
  14. You don't need to be a full time hunter to have a hunting life, people have a working life, a social life, some of us have a sex life as well I've spent most of my life "hunting" in most of it's forms ,even lived off lamping, there was a time when I could earn more lamping than working so that's what I did. Just because someone appears to be on here all day doesn't mean they actually are. Take me for instance, I'm at home all day in the off season so look in on my tea breaks, others are looking in at work. A hunting life doesn't have to exclude all other aspects of life to be worthy of its n
  15. There is no set amount mate, it depends on the weather, amount of work, size of the dog etc. Just start with a set amount then monitor each dog on a daily basis and adjust accordingly. Mike.
  16. Flying 3 Harris hawks daily throughout the season, plus maintaining a breeding pair, It's pretty much a way of life, no holidays or weekends away, even in the summer your constantly on call, you can't find just any body to give you a day off.
  17. Don't know where you are mate, but I'm in Snowdonia, I can be in the mountains, on my own in winter, a couple of hours away from the nearest road, flying my birds. All I take is the stuff I need for the birds and a phone and I'm 58 years old. So I've got to ask, where Are you ?
  18. Yes mate , you call him in , haul him in if he doesn't respond straight away and give plenty of praise, a good recall means he comes even when he doesn't want to , because he's been conditioned to believe he has no choice. I don't understand how overdoing the retrieve training is detrimental to a rough shooting dog. Mike.
  19. Get your recall sorted first mate, although he's still a bit young, if you had good recall you could just call him in. Teach recall on a line mate so he believes there is absolutely no choice.
  20. It's believed that Romanys arrived in England around the 13th century, but I'm sure there would have been lurchers in use before then, I think the real reason for the original collie lurcher was to try to disguise a running dog as a herding Dog. In those days any long legged herding dogs owned by peasants were docked by law in the belief that it would stop them from catching game. Any dogs owned by peasants that lived within the royal hunting grounds, other than herding dogs, had to fit through a dog gauge. If they didn't they had a front foot cut off! You sure it was a foot mate? I th

  22. Lurchers go way back before miners and steel workers Mate, more like medieval times.
  23. Say you want to win the jackpot in a lottery, you get to pick a ticket from one of 2 boxes, one box contains nothing but winning tickets £10, £25, and so on. The other box contains all the loosing tickets, but the jackpot ticket can be in either box, which box would you take your pick from ? Same with dogs, you'd pick from the line with all the winning genes in it. You've a much better chance of coming out with a prize.
