    Snow

Had a sprinkling of snow today !
  2. Agreed completely, but what is to be done and by who? the law is now used to control instead of protect the masses ( or the great unwashed) so any protest has to registered and "managed by the police" having marched twice against the hunting ban and to be a part of one of the biggest and most peaceful civil protests seen in the UK i was still dismayed to see the Blairite cronies and their Tory chums vote the ban through using the parliament act this was a complete misuse of this particular act of parliament but the legal challenge to it was declined by the law lords who said that although it m
  3. Nice little dogs, but not big enough or fast enough to be termed an all rounder.
  4. Nothing whatsoever wrong with a bag if you take care, used bags for 50 years without mishap. I've seen plenty of boxes dropped, banged against posts and rolled down banks and just by fast walking you can hear their heads banging on the side of a box so don't come on hear making out that just because someone uses a bag they somehow have no knowledge of, or consideration for their ferrets. Some of you young folk think you've got the monopoly on care and compassion. Ps never used a muzzle, pulled teeth or fed bread and milk in my life.
  5. Sorry mate but you couldn't be further from the truth. I've explained this on numerous threads, till I'm blue in the face. I'll put it this way, chuck a mug full of yellow marbles into a bucket, then one of blue , followed by one of green, finish off with four mugs of red. Now give 'em a good stir, close your eyes and one marble at a time refill a few mugs , then tell me you've got the same percentage of each colour in each mug. good way to put it fella Sorry, but STABBA is right. Just like most people wanting a dog... you're basing it on LOOKS alone. No I'm not! I'm ba

  7. I've used bags for 50 yrs, never squashed a ferret yet. Best bags are made of strong canvas and I put big brass eyelets in for vents, ferrets stay warm and dry in jacket or rucksack. Only use boxes to get there and back in car. That way they spend no longer than necessary in the bags.
  8. Yeh ! the hob thought she's a bit weak looking , I'll eat her quick before she catches something !
  9. The point of the hock is the canine equivalent of our knees. Cow hocked means that these point inwards, causing the dogs feet to toe out,it is a confirmation fault ,but many dogs have it and pursue a long and productive working life,it can indicate a propensity to slipped patellas later in life, but it is far from a given. It's actually the equivalent of our ankle, and cow hocks are detrimental to good performance. Anything out of line in a dogs legs constitute a weakness, as forces go straight up the leg when the dog pushes against the ground. It works like two 3x2's end on , if you put w
  10. It makes no difference other than size, in both coursing and racing greyhounds the best dogs are the fastest dogs, both disciplines are a test of speed. The best greyhounds for lurcher breeding are dogs that have been worked and proved they can do the job.
  11. have a look here mate. http://www.totalfrance.com/france/forum/viewtopic.php?t=59565
  12. Not a 100% but I think you have to take a comprehensive exam on hunting in general , and I believe it's only available in French .
  13. The pup has to be capable of catching, I always look at it this way, when you first go out with a pup it will chase crows and gulls,it soon learns that it's never going to catch one, so stops chasing them. The same thing happens with rabbits, although it can be turned round with some easy ones, it's still a big knock to their confidence at a critical time in their development.
  14. You should never bollock a dog when it has come to you, no matter how tempting. But if you have to go TO the dog then a bollocking and scruffing is defenitly required! Get it on a long lead andd try again, failing that put the dog in a pen with a hornless ram in it! I doubt it would look at another sheep again. It wasn't playing with them when chasing the sheep The lad said the dog came to him, hence no bollocking should have been given, and the ram thing don't always work, seen a dog put with a ram, with horns, get a right hammering, it pulled a ewe down on the way home !
  15. Here you go, someone else saying you can ruin a dog... What evidence do you have for this please? Not evidence as such, but I've seen a few knee ligaments go in youngsters, never seen it happen in older dogs.
  16. Smaller dogs mature earlier .

  18. And while your "coming down on her like a ton of bricks " blow a refs whistle as hard as you can, she will associate it with a bollocking, then eventually you can use the whistle at a distance and she will feel bollocked without even having to touch her.
  19. Same as you mate, you can tell when a pup is well capable of catching a rabbit, I can't remember not catching first time out .
  20. I don't think that is stamina, recovery rate is related to fitness, the fitter the dog ,the quicker the dog recovers between runs. Stamina is the ability to maintain a high work load for a prolonged period without rest. thats what i ment a dog that can run rabbit after rabbit and not tier is good stamina so his recovery rate is also greater so stamina and recovery play a big part together Obviously a dog can be fit and have stamina. Stamina is the ability to run a long distance without stopping to recover. The ability to run lots of short runs with recovery in between, is more related to f

  22. You can do what you like ,but the only way to get them fen fit, is fen running.
  23. Don't know what it proves, but when I was younger, I ran cross country , road and track races, as well as marathons. I ran 10 miles in 56 minutes, 20 miles in 2 hrs.Now I've taken lots of dogs over the years on long fast training runs. Terriers, sppringers, deerhounds, deerhound crosses, bedlington crosses, collie crosses and saluki crosses and the only ones I didn't have to slow down for were the saluki crosses.
