  1. If it's well set up, you can keep them with minimum bother and hardship, they are pretty easy animals to look after. And as has been said, there are a lot of ferrets that are happy enough to spend their lives in a big court / run and running about through tubes in the garden. Most folk only work their ferrets about six months of the year anyhow. . . . over winter, The important things are - They have company (keep two). They are well (and properly) fed and watered. They have a good, spacious and secure cage, pref with some stimuli in. They are handled regularly. They are taken out
  2. I also found that, cubs everywhere last year, not so much this year.
  3. Might make you feel better to know it's looking grim here, not seeing any young at all and very very few rabbits. It's grim mate. Looks like it's going to be another season of driving, driving, driving. . . . . .

  5. Was sat at work bored today, thinking back over some of the days out bushing (or mooching) that I have had, just out with man (or men) and dogs, in the day, seeing what could be stirred up. Sometimes it's surprising. So I was hoping to hear some of your stories, or at least some stories of the days that stick in your memory. I'll kick off with one, from last season. Not the best day in terms of bag size etc, but a real memorable one for various reasons. I think it was last season. although being honest it may have been the season before. I woke up early doors, and set off to pick u
  6. hes been to Wales recently, he must have brought some of that welshness back with him
  7. Aye and left Simo in charge. . . . . and look what happenned!
  8. Sorry Paulus It was just Simo being 'special' Should have gone to spec savers . . . . . . . .
  9. I'm in awe of some of the dog training on here. Dogs that as pup's were put back on a lead with an amazing intuition that you were about to bump into someone, before it happened, and had 100% recall, 100% of the time, having no interest in any other people, or dogs in any way, and immediatly returning to heal like a trail grade spaniel The man had his dogs off leads in a field, when other folk popped up and the pup had an excited moment of wanting to run over and play. . . . he's a pup. . . . that's what they (often) do. Granted it's understandable that the girls got freaked out.
  10. I agree in some respects. And have thought the same, but many cow dogs, don't have to do many miles, very often. And spend most of their time moving them about a yard or short distances, not much running. More bullying the stock. Whereas hill collies often have to run all over the fecking hill, all day long. Maybe a hill collie that also musters cattle lol.
  11. most dogs only yapp because theyve been started to early and had no chance of catching a rabbit as they havent matured enough and just got frustrated,so thats down to the owner,i would breed of a yapper in them circumstances but if you brought it on properly and it opened i wouldnt then I think it's just in some dogs mate And quite possibly a trait that could be passed on. But I know what you are saying
  12. I think there is a difference between. . . . yapping occaisionaly and being a yapper. Some dogs will give the odd yap at the start of the night out of excitment, or out of frustration when they say, slip on a turn. Some will yap more when they lose sight of the quarry in cover, either because of frustration or out of some kind of hunting instinct (maybe trying to drive the game out). However, some dogs will just sing like a canary the whole time they are behind something. The first is easy enough to handle and I think plenty of dogs will let out the odd noise from time to time, and
  13. To be honest, i'd stock break it, and sort it's recall, and maybe a few other bits and bobs, before I started trying to get it hunting hard. Just like any other dog. If bred right, the hunting part should just come.
  14. Have you actually been out with any of his dogs? Or many dogs from him? Just out of interest? And do you actually know how many litters he breeds mate? Or is it all total theory? Being honest, his dogs and the dogs that carry his blood have a very definate physical stamp, which I like. They seem a lot tougher made than a lot of other 'working whippets' I have seen about the place. When you say that his dogs 'will be on par with anybody who has a working whippet'. . . . . is that based upon comparing dogs from different lines, people etc in the field? Or because you have one
  15. Have you actually been to his yard mate, and know how many dogs he has got. It's not many at all. He has a small house I agree what you say about workers mate, but it's like anything else, i'd take a known line of worker over one worker where i didn't know the gens before, whoever bred it and where ever it was from Plenty other folk out there breeding decent whippets. Mikes has done for me
  16. Nice dog mate Looks like you dropped lucky there, and are going to have some sport
  17. Think there are some decent lakie x fells near me.

    Cocker.

Seen a cocker today, broken leg as pup, been fixed up. But now up for adoption at a vets. From working stock. Nice little thing.
  19. yep my mate has too, just wash as normal then use a squeegy to to wipe dry job done ... My local terrier man friend has tiled kennels, they are brillant. Pinky - Yes, security is being sorted, but I thought i'd rather leave the details quiet.
  20. Cheers pal. The idea is to have the run outside the garage and the sleeping compartments inside, with pop holes through the wall.
  21. Not sure why only the one photo showed up? The collar is so that we can hold onto the little sod
