  1. Letting the whippet loose without any training could be a disaster waiting to happen. First thing first. . . . . break the dog to ferrets and live stock. . . . . then at least, if nothing else, it won't be killing things it shouldnt be. Other than that, for a first time trip, I guess all that is needed is decent enough recall and possibly the dog being trained to retrieve. There are a whole pile of other skills and things which would be very useful if you and the dog intend to make a career of ferreting, but most of these can be learnt as you go a long. Good luck
  2. Tom - We have some mrk6's out and cage traps as well. Just need some more mrk4's for round the pens and round our grain trailer, as some have gone walk about!
  3. I got a couple of pretty big freezers . . . . . But half the next lot is 'pre-sold' as it were. BRY - The first lot were pretty fatty, but the last lot were not so bad, I got the timing etc right. More fatty than the white pigs, but not too much, just right for those I gave it to. It's pretty much all gone, but I'd be interested in doing some bacon, how would I do it from the belly?
  4. Aye, what sindasox said. Jean is a legend. she's retired twice, but she's still in there everytime I go in
  5. An right mk4s are ideal for those critters then .......... Yer, I have a pile out, but could do with some new ones.
  6. Rats, squirrel, mink, stoat, weasel. It's for the shoot mate
  7. I was looking for mrk4's mate, for the tunnels. But how much for the mrk6s?
  8. That's exactly what I did. Found a little piece of bramble jungle that the owner didnt use . . . . and started with three glouchester old spots, just done five saddle backs and am aiming for ten in the near future Had pork chops for my tea tonight
  9. Hello All, I need to order / buy some fenns (or fenn type traps) pronto. Can anyone suggest the best place in terms of value and speed of service? Cheers, Jai.
  10. I wouldn't say I'm an expert but I'd say that wasn't the best advice to be honest mate. As has been said if the breeding is there it will hunt. But trying to reign in a dog that has started hunting without proper control and training and is hunting for itself is not easy. A lot of folk ruin spaniels entering them to game too easy.I don't intend to get into an argument about it. What I wrote is the abridged version of a 2 minute conversation I had with a professional full-time working spaniel trainer about a month ago. He did only say to encourage it to hunt. There was no mention of entering it
  11. I often think it. She is a good bitch and a credit to her owner :-)

  13. We all must pay for our sins mate. :-)
  14. so do you give 6 months hard graft and 6 months total rest???i fthats what you mean im sorry but i dont agree with that one bit I think you mis understood daz. I think he means that during the working season, when working flat out, the only 'conditioning' he does is through working them, as the time when they are not being worked, they need the time to rest and recuperate.
  15. My lads looking at your bitch and drooling haha Nice one matey
  16. Now I don't know much about conditioning I guess. And I know this doesn't really mean shit, but I was at the Pelenna Valley hound show recently, with my whippet, and the bloke judging the whippets seemed really impressed at my dogs condition when he laid his hands on him, and he struck me as one of the judges i've met that knew his stuff, at least about whippets. Also folk out with me quite often comment on the dogs fitness. So roughly, what I do is. . . .get him out as much as humanly possible. He's the kind of dog that is always on the move, always hunting and covers vast amounts of grou
  17. What about Ultra marathons, or serious mountain climbing? Or just climbing in general.
  18. I was not knocking you mate, in any way. I feel that, if one has knowledge of what one is knocking. . . . . one can knock away. It's an opinion, and it's valued, and worth listening to an considering. A lot of folk just like to crab, and make general accusations, without really having much knowledge of what they speak of. Or at least that's what it seems like on here at times. I'm no authority, on Mike Brown or whippets. . . . . but he was good to me, and the dog that I got from him, has been one hell of a friend to me, and what I would consider a pretty damn good working beast. . . . . f
  19. Now the . . . . . you do sound like a fool. I would hazard a guess that you are pretty young, probably a teenager? There are a few folk that have commented on this thread, who have done . . . .well. . . .to put it mildly. . . .a shit ton of ferreting. So just on that front, you are very very wrong. Also, if you knew much about ferrets, you would know that they are obligate carnivores, who in fact have an intolerance to lactose. In giving a weak or ill ferret that kind of diet, you would probably lessen the chances of survival. The best thing to quickly get a weak ferret back on it's feet
  20. It just comes down to money with people like that. same as Hancock breeds from non workers and charges top whack Y.I.S Leeview Funnily enough, Mike charged me less than i've seen most whippets priced at. . . .. from a pick of the litter. . . . . . . . As for the Hancock comparison. . . . . how many litters a year does Mr H breed? And how many does Mike breed. . . . . 1.. . . .2? Ring Hancock now. . . . you can go pick up a pup tomorrow. I know a lad who rang Mike the other day wanting a pup, and I believe he was told, that There wouldn't be another litter until some
  21. At this age, just build a bond with the dog mate, spend as much time as possible with it. Keep it close to you, get it looking at you. Get it to know it's name. That's about it really at the early stages, other than the obvious house training etc. I personally also wouldn't do a few things - i.e wouldnt play any kind of tug of war, wouldnt throw a ball for it, or let it chase anything etc. But most important at this stage is the bond and eye contact for me Good luck
  22. Because they knock folk for running bellied up hares, leverets and cubs. . . . . . . . and thinking they are gods of the hunting world . . . . .? Do what you do and try not to worry about others, either way. You want to seem clue up wat time a yr is stuff bredin now then. I was seein young in october still and seein young leverets in decem. Our climate not like it was 20yrs ago everythin change and so shud our seasons imo While I agree that you are seeing more young at odd times of year . . . . . anyone who is out enough in the countryside (and I know you are), knows that there ar
