Who Remembers When We Had No Gadgets
charlie caller replied to Peter Wyatt's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
In that case I see what you mean, and agree entirely, they always say the good old days are here and now, well they WERE the good old days as far as I am concerned, wandering for miles, with the air rifle, or ferrets, and not a care in the world -
For Sale Hw97Kt Blackline Tuned. 177

Me too mate, sure someone will be along soon, bargain considering the work you put into it mate. -
My hornet with the PES/MAE moderator on was quieter than any hmr I have heard.
-
Agreed, it will be back thats for sure, but unless its 5-10 yards away and you can head shoot it, forget the .410 mate, if it left any dead hens, stake one out really close and upwind of you, that way the fox will have to stay and tug at the hen and you would get a shot, but I really would discourage a .410 for foxes, have you not got a .22 rf, even quieter, and deadly with a head shot.

You WILL regret selling the hornet pal trust me, I know I regret selling mine, lots.

http://www.guntrader.co.uk/Guns-For-Sale/CZ_Rifle_527_For-Sale_140308154717143 Looks a decent rifle at a good price, I know this guy and he is a good honest chap, ring him and ask about the rifle he will give an honest opinion, you would need to get it screwcut for a moderator, but at that price so what.

charlie caller replied to mattybugeye's topic in Gun's and Rifle's
This is a belting tuned 97 for someone, a lot of careful work gone into this rifle, effectively a brand new tuned rifle, for less than a twangy new one from the factory, a bargain for somebody. -
As said some local chancer has being having a go at them without the farmers knowledge, all very good advice above, also try building a permanent hide in a couple of locations, let the bunnies get used to it, then creep in before light and bobs your uncle.
-
And just to add to that venerable list of pellets above, mine .177 absolutely loves H&N Baraccuda hunter extreme, 9.57 grain, it is pellet on pellet out to 40 yards+ and they pack a hell of a punch.
-
Best thing you can do is keep the hornet, and dont bother with the pop gun

Gtet the chokes bored out, cost about a tenner, most Russian Purdys are tight choked.

You got a good spade Dan?
-
And I am not sure its always for the better, I think there is a tendency to over egg the cake so to speak, I reckon most airgun and rimfire shooters, (myself included) would shoot just as much with a simple fixed power scope, as a fully loaded modern affair.

Pure scum, if that thing gets in we are fu*ked.
-
Back in the 80s a 4x40 scope was pretty much standard issue on air rifles and rimfire, with a 3-9x32 or 40 being for the seriously well heeled, I must have shot hundreds and hundreds of rabbits, squirrels, pigeons etc with a 4x40 over the years.
-
Cheers pal pm sent.

Now you are using your head pal, anything to stack the odds in your favour is good references can never be a bad thing, try getting to a few farmers markets and actually chatting to some farmers, the pub after a livestock sale is a good place to meet them, and a hot toddy or a single malt can pay for itself ten fold, keep at it lad dont give up.

As I have said elsewhere, using a springer is not too far removed from shooting my .243 cf I.E recoil, follow through, and the weight of my hw77 is very similar, so I tend to shoot off sticks quite a lot, which is superb practice for deer stalking and fast deployment of the sticks, very little of this would be possible with a pcp, with its dead firing cycle, and I reckon that I am just as accurate with my spring rifle as I am with a pcp, in fact the other week out on one of my permissions which is a 120+ acre wood I met two lads who had recently gained permission, we had a steady walk round,

The fact is through the fault of the media mainly, we live in a gun phobic society, so to the general public, irrespective of the fact its a 12 ftlbs pop gun or a 3000ftlbs .30-06 stalking rifle, a gun is a gun, and to a lot of people you are an evil gun toting maniac acting on the fringes of society, and not to be trusted, so anything to make life easier for yourself, without surrendering to them and ending your law abiding activities is a good step in my book.
-
Hi anyone got a chronograph they dont use lying about? anything considered (working obviously) cash waiting cheers.
-
And you are going to get a lot more knock backs pal, but keep at it, you WILL get some.
-
Why not try a springer for a while (if possible) and see how get on with it, if you are on good terms with your local dealer/gunsmith ask him to lend you one for the weekend, it will be a learning curve, but once you have mastered a quality springer your sense of achievement at pulling off a good shot will be double
-
Well let me just say, I grew up using springers, other than pump up pneumatics (and I do still like a good pump up rifle) there was no alternative, I have owned quite a few pcp rifles since the 90s and all have been good, probably very good indeed, do I still own one? No, but the tuned hw77 .177 gets used a lot, and is so damn accurate, and hardly ever fails to put quarry in the bag, that I just dont see the need for a pcp and all its attendant paraphernalia, of pumps, dive tanks etc,now I use an air rifle on the whole to provide food for my hawk during the moult, when a rich diet of squirrel,
