What Deer Calibre For First Deer Rifle.
charlie caller replied to shropshire dan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
You can disagree all you like, however if you were filling a test sheet in and put down .243 as the legal minimum, you would be wrong , not technically wrong, wrong, end of, and your answer would receive a cross instead of a tick, he never mentioned .243 as one of his choices, and has, as you can see for yourself been granted a .30-06, stroke of luck there then eh? -

I'm sure you know that .243 is the minimum legal caliber for deer but so many other things to consider like the distances you re looking to shoot at given the vastly different trajectory of a .243 v .308. Added to that the type of quarry you are looking to shoot. But if wild boar is something you are looking to hunt then 30-06 sounds plausible but good luck getting a ticket for that! Actually .243 is not the legal minimum, on large deer, it is .240. technically correct but rather pedantic.. .243 is the normal calibre most would use IMHO Not pedantic at all, and no technically a -

its a necked down .30-06 .30-03 Charlie. Still a big cartridge though. No Alsone the .270 winchester is derived from a necked down .30-06 not the earlier, very short run .30-03 which was considered underpowered, so was altered and became the .30-06, the .25-06 .270, are simply necked down versions of the .30-06, parent case. -

Awesome series cant wait

I try to watch as little as possible, most of it is complete mindless dross, just stick to stuff like 10,000bc, and of course Vikings, etc
-
Well the last time I shot Canada geese with a rifle was a .22 hornet, doing 3100fps with a 35 grain v-max bullet, now that is a proper tool for the job I accept a 12ftlbs air rifle would kill them with a head shot, but as others have said, not the best tool for the job.

You aint going to get a much classier set up than that mate, top rifle and scope, good price too, if its all tidy gear, BUY IT.
-
Provided you get the 5/6/7/8/9/10 etc shot to hit the mark and don't just wing it with the 2. Not knocking anyone's ability but just saying. Point taken, but lets take a slightly different perspective, in a survival situation, where your life depended on your choice, would you choose an air rifle, or a shotgun? I know what my choice would be, the one with the big bang
-
Yes Barry, but you are forgetting the other 5/6/7/8/9/10 etc pellets hitting the bird at the same time also
-
Well my advice for what its worth would be BASC everytime, but yours the money, mine the advice
-
If anyone would like to set that up, I will rise to the challenge, shotgun every time and I do love my air rifles.
-
Mark, I would agree with most of your post, apart from the far more "skill, and field craft" if you think that being out on a saltmarsh waiting for Teal to drop into decoys on a splash 30 yards in front of you does not require field craft, or hitting a Pheasant doing 40mph, curling at 40 yards does not require skill, then I dont think you have done the same kind of shotgun shooting as me
-
Simps, the last five words of your last post says it all, "talk about putting you off" you have hit the nail on the head, DO NOT STAND FOR IT, join BASC, write to the CC, what a shower.

So applying those those rules then would suggest that everyone will be granted an open certificate in the near future when I had a closed certificate, I was told, if you are invited to shoot on some land, a quick call to the firearms dept is all that is required to establish the status of the ground in question, assuming it is passed for your calibre, you can crack on! Only last year a pal and myself were granted permission on some new ground, we both hold open certificates, but just out of interest, my mate phoned up to enquire what the ground was passed for, he was told in about ten second
-
I think he means they all piss in the same pot, and will throw their lot in against us without a second thought, just a suspicion
-
Totally agree SS, ground is passed for a certain calibre, on two main basis, the quarry the shooter is wishing to shoot, and of course, most importantly, if the ground is safe to use a certain calibre on, now anyone who uses firearms should be totally aware of the fact that if a shot is safe for a .22lr, it is equally safe for a .308, I.E if you do not have a completely safe backstop, you do not take a shot, simple as that. So when the police pass ground safe for a .22-250 but not a .243 for instance, they are not applying logic, they are making the rules up as they go, and this rule making is

What a pile of tripe, so ask them how would a person who has the condition "land deemed suitable by the chief constable" on their ticket, which means you can shoot on any land that is passed for your calibre, provided you have authority to do so, is expected to find out if new ground is passed or not? Absolute crap mate, speak to BASC in the morning explain your situation to them and ask how to proceed, has any one else apart from BH enquired as to the status of a piece of ground lately? I have done it several times over the years, just rung up and asked about ......Farm and they have given me
