  1. If a dog can be broken to livestock, why is it so difficult to believe that it can be broken to cats? All this macho stuff about killing cats is very damaging, and irresponsible. Cats are classified as property in England, and as such, anyone who kills a cat would be guilty of theft and/or criminal damage.
  2. 'My dog has more prey drive than your dog' What a load of crap. This place gets more and more like a junior school playground everyday.
  3. Fine if you are skint or tight, but they are called 'spent hens' for a reason. Good advise there. Modern hybrids will lay 300-350 eggs each year with little or no fuss. They don't cost much to buy and are very cost effective to keep.
  4. Warrens or Black Rocks. Easy to look after, prolific layers and not too expensive to buy. If you are going down the pure breed road, then stick to known favourites like Light Sussex, RIR, Legbars or Welsummers. Buy at POL rather than spent hens (AKA 'rescues') and read the thread by Ditchshitter on keeping rats under control.
  5. What a load of bollocks. How do you think a gundog catches a runner to retrieve it? A decent gundog needs plenty of 'preydrive' in order to do it's job properly.
  6. I shouldn't worry mate; it wasn't you that bumped the thread up: Same applies though. I've dealt with Brian for over 15 years now and while I think he'd be the first to admit that they aren't the most organised people out there, they do make some fine nets, and I've never not received an order when I've expected it.
  7. I've dealt with Liam and Brian for many years now; and I've never had a problem.
  8. Large scale population reduction is becoming more and more common around here. The reason for that is the ongoing battle with poachers who seem to think that it's OK to cut fences, drive through gates, take vehicles onto growing crops and then just throw away the hares they catch. Sometimes the running dog fraternity are their own worst enemy. It's hard to get permission to use running dogs on rabbits around here just because the minority take advantage. When you've experienced the level of relentless criminality associated with running dogs around here you can't blame the farmers
  9. Apology accepted with pleasure I happen to agree with you on many of the points you raise. What gets me going is all this 'hares should only be run with dogs' nonsense. Each to his own; the fact that you don't want to do something yourself doesn't mean that it should never be done. It's that kind of blinkered ignorance that got us a hunting ban. We might make seven pages yet
  10. A very wise man once said to me; "Just because he's a wanker doesn't mean that he's always wrong". Ideation, I don't know why you think I'm hard to have a logical debate with; I find you an interesting and stimulating person to debate with. While I appreciate that driven hare shooting isn't everyone's cup of tea, I don't think it helps anyone to condemn it and constantly slag off the shooting community.
  11. Yep. That is one of the most astute (sp) comments I've read on here regarding hares. Far too many folks thinking that they are better than others. Live and let live.
  12. Have you been on many hare drives Jesus? Or is this just an opinion made from 'what you've heard'. And as for suggesting that anyone who shoots driven game is somehow less of a sportsman, I think a few may disagree. Ignorance and intolerance is something we all fought against. It seems that there is an enemy within. As someone else has already said; what a bunch of hypocrites, some of whom are no better than the likes of LACS, Animal Aid etc.
  13. There is actual Video footage out there of Hares getting legged , on mass hare shoots and crawling away to die slow. Im all for Hunting and Sport but i could never condone Hare shooting , Never. Sorry if this pisses some off its just my Opinion. They are for Running . The Gun is Indiscriminate, it will Kill Fit and Healthy as well as old or diseased. Coursing tends to deal with the weak, the old and diseased thus giving a Healthy Stronger race of Hares after a Few seasons Coursing on any said land, Coursing is Beneficial to the Species, Shooting definatley aint. So how is a
  14. The Difference being Ian is they Dont breed like Rabbits. Once a Healthy Population of Hares are decimated in any said location they dont recover like Rabbits can. What rubbish. There are plenty of estates in East Anglia where hundreds of hares have been shot year in year out. If they didn't recover their numbers how would that happen?
  15. I'm not suggesting that people shouldn't be allowed to discuss issues that are important to them, even if it is just football; but that there should be a dedicated area for it. For example; we have a dedicated area for falconry on the forum. Falconry does nothing for me, and I rarely (if ever) look in there, does that make sense? It would just be alot easier to ignore if it was in it's own area. It would also mean that interesting topics didn't get buried under the plague of threads about Celtic United or whatever they're called. And yes Rocky, I know that a few folks think I'm a
  16. Any chance of a dedicated section for football and other sports? I write as someone who is less than fond of football, and the fanatics that follow it. More and more of the forum seems to be getting choked up with football related threads, and while I understand that it's the be all and end all of some folks lives, the rest of us don't really need to see it. A dedicated area (a bit like an asylum) would keep the chavball fans happy and mean that the rest of us didn't have to see the crap.
  17. But that's not legal any more! Even if it was, are you seriously suggesting that 3 or 4 hundred hares could be taken in one day by dogs? What makes you think that shotgun shot hares are not 'usable'? Millions of gamebirds are shot each year with shotguns and their carcasses find their way on to dining tables accross europe. Why is the hare any different? I think that on a recent hare thread in the shooting section it was mentioned that the game dealer came at lunchtime to collect the hares. Do you seriously think that they would do that if the carcass was of no use? Lot
  18. I'm thinking about organising a hare drive just to annoy some of the muppets on here.

    1. just jack

      just jack

      that should do the trick!!

      haha

  19. So are you suggesting that hare drives shouldn't be done because the hare is too sporting? What happens about all the damage they do if that is the case? Lot's of people get sport from rabbits, and have a great respect for the humble coney. Are you suggesting that they shouldn't be shot because it's more sporting to run/net/trap them? I can see both sides of this. Years ago I used to course, and I've also been a keen beagler for many years. While I can appreciate the sporting nature of running a hare, I can also understand that when their numbers reach high levels action needs to b
  20. You have to remember that in some areas the hare population is very high, and they cause lots of damage. In this kind of situation, the hare is not a sporting target, but a pest that needs to be controlled. Don't forget that the definition of pest is a plant or animal in the wrong place. It's rare that you see shooting folk coming on here and publicly condemning the running dog community, so why is it OK for the running dog community to openly run down shooting people just because they don't hold a quarry species in quite such high esteem? I'd love to see the lurcher that could ca
  21. Don't people break their terriers to stock anymore?
  22. Foxes are wild animals and are therefore exempt from the Animal (By Products) Regulations. You can bury them on site.
  23. Had a single shot Hushpower for a long time - it was a good bit of kit that paid for itself. Up-graded last year to a Stealth pump action (based on the mossburg) quieter, easier to clean and much more useful with the extra 2 shots.
  24. Why 'barbaric'? I know this isn't the lurcher section, but as they would say on there you sound like an anti. There is nothing wrong with population reduction where numbers justify it. All this lurcher 'snobbery' is getting tiresome. What the hell gives any one sportsman the right to proclaim his or her sport somehow better than another? I'm afraid that if I was a farmer in this area I would be pretty much shooting hares on sight just to stop the morons driving where they like at night. Let's not forget that running hares with dogs is now illegal, whereas shooting them isn't.
