  1. It seems words can easily be twisted when having a debate. Just to clarify I aren't some 'smug blood thirsty dick head' that enjoys killing anything that moves, I always respect my quarry, the land I am on and all other aspects of the sport. Just to clarify what I meant using words such as enjoy and fun. I enjoy myself when out fishing, ferreting and shooting. I don't particually enjoy killing a rabbit any more than I do smacking a a trout over the head with a headache stick, but it's part of a sport that I love and has to be done.
  2. I go out in my boat because it's fun, I go fishing because it's fun, it's a figure of speech, I do things I enjoy and hunting, shooting, ferreting, fishing are all my hobbies. The top and bottom of it is you don't agree with hunting/culling in the summer, that's fine, that's why we have open forums to discuss things. I new someone would strongly disagree with me that's why I posted my opinion, it has kept me occupied at work for the last hour having a debate about it. Going home now to sort out my nets.
  3. I use the word 'fun' meaning I enjoy beeing out in the field(summer/winter/whenever). If I had used the same words in regards to winter shooting or winter ferreting then chances are nobody would have commented. I dont understand what you mean by 'smug shooter.' As this is someone elses thread about a day out and not a thread about me controling rabbits during the summer perhaps you can explain what you mean in a private message.
  4. I always have "fun" too when I'm killing rabbits in the summer......NOT!See statements like that is what fecks me off.It should never be fun this time of year. If its fun in the winter, why cant it be fun in the summer???? Wether these rabbits are pregnant or not they still cause thousands of pounds worth of damage. The farm we are going to on sat has holes all over the fields where sheep, cows and horses are kept, the rabbits cause havvock. They eat the grass that the animals should be feeding on and over the winter they ripped all of the plastic of the sylidge bales. Thats not to me
  5. It doesn't bother me at all, we have been shooting and ferreting pregnent ones since february.
  6. A few permissions we have are estate run and we aren't allowed to shoot, so the only way we can get them is with the ferrets. Its doing these permissions we have got other permission where we can shoot so we like to show our face through the summer and keep at them. Where we are going this week we are now allowed to shoot due to us doing such a good job with the ferrets in the past so we are just showing our face. We will still enjoy it though, there mostly nice big sets in open grazing feilds. We might even take the hushpower and the rimmy which should be good fun. Sorry forgot to ad
  7. Good result mate, I dont know why people make such a song and dance about summer ferreting we did loads last year and loved it. We dont go every week like in the winter and we still had a few good days. If you dont mind a bit of waiting about and a few nettle stings then it can still be good fun on a nice summers day.
  8. Cheers mate, from Loch Awe last year.

  9. """""good luck pal ill be going out myself in a couple of weeks i dont really want to like as theres to many babys around but a farmer approached me the other day and said he wants rid of all the rabbits young or old on his land i tryed to explain that its not the season for going yet but he wants rid of them now so i said ill have a look up when hes got all his lambs out of the way suppose it will give me chance to see what my new ferrets work like."""" Sometimes you just have to do a bit in the summer, otherwise farmers will let other people on. We have got quite a bit of permissi
  10. Won't be in a rush, just giving the ferrets a run and keeping the farmer happy, will pop a few off with the rimmy whilst waiting for ferrets if get any deep kills or soke up the local surroundings. Just fancy a look out. We did quite a bit of summer ferreting last year and enjoyed it, you just have to expect a few more kills down the holes and expect to miss a few holes. We will be doing sets in open fields with the longnets and purse nets so shouldn't miss many (if theybolt). As for pregnant ones already had dozens this year and not had problem gutting them, the butcher wasn't complaining
  11. Going out on a local permission on Saturday with the ferrets just to show face and give the ferrets a run out. We haven't been out for weeks, hopefully the rain will keep away and we should get a few fully grown ones. We might have a wonder with the Riffles/shotguns as well if there's a few about. Will let you know how we do or don't get on, got a feeling there might be alot of waiting around!!!
  12. I was just wondering if there is such a thing as trammel type purse nets and if they would work or if anyone has used them. By trammel type, I mean a purse net that would catch adult size rabbits and baby ones. I know alot of you are against ferreting or don't like ferreting during the summer months but sometimes we have to, I personly enjoy it every now and again.
  13. I would tell him you want a 17 hmr for long distance vermin 150 yards and a . 22 lr for bunny bashing to yards and to use when it's too windy for the hmr. You need a moderator for both and expanding amo as well. If you are going to do alot of foxing then I would think about applying for the .22lr for rabbits and a small centrefire calibre like a .22 hornet or a .222 and not bother with the 17hmr. Just for the record, I got my fac last year and got granted fac air, a 22 lr and a .22hornet on my first application. As long as you can explain a need for each calibre then you shouldn't have any
  14. First of all I have seen this box and its no where near as big as it looks in the picture, the lad who has it on his back is 8 years old thats why it looks huge. Me and Pual along with his Grandson go out every weekend through the winter and often during the summer. This year we have got some good permission and sometimes need lots of equipment. We nearly always ferret dawn till dusk and often take 6 medium sized ferrets with us. We use longnets on some sets and we purse net some sets, we also purse net and long some. We always take between 100 and 250 purse nets and sometimes need plenty of
  15. I have a airarms 410 on FAC, but its been regulated by Ben Taylor. I love the gun and it does come in handy in some situations when a rimmy isn't suitable. One thing I would say is try and get one thats regulated so all of the shots are the same power. Air arms dont come with a regulator from the factory and it will cost you the thick end of £200 to get a regulator fit. The hw100 comes with a biult in regulator but its a heavier gun and so do some other makes. Ben taylor will supply a few different makes tuned and regulated but you do pay for the privlidge. Mine is in .22 flavour and is runni
  16. Hi all, My mate bought a webley verminator 2 years ago and has stopped shooting so he wants rid of it. I cant find much about them on the internet apart from crap reviews, so I was wanting to know how much he should expect to get for it. It comes with a cheap scope that works well and a 212 bar divers bottle and adaptor. He bought it second hand 2 years ago from a shop and reconds he paid £350 without the bottle.I told him at the time he should of got a AA410 but he wouldn't listen. How much do you think it would sell for now?
  17. Sometimes its good to ask questions that have already been asked, it gives newer members chance to answer the same question that might have a different answer or oppinion than the people that have previously answered. The people that have previously answered a question may also have a different oppinion due to more experiance or newer equipment or ideas may have been thought of to deal with a particular situation since to question was asked a couple of years ago. In short, a new debate on the same topic can sometimes be intresting, if you dont like seeing the same thread then dont read/answer
  18. I have three 5' double hutches joined together with pipes with 7 ferrets in it, I have 3 litter trays in total and they all use the trays. It makes life easier to clean them out because you can just lift out the tray, emty it in the bin, top it back up with cat litter and put it back in again. I use the small 'stone chips' sort of cat litter from pets at home, it called 'lightweight' cat litter(dont no why because it is heavy). When I have sometimes run out I have used graval in the past for the odd day or two, and even wood shavings, when they are used to a tray they will 5hit in it whatever
  19. I have 6 working jills and one working hob, the hob is probably the best worker out of them all but does tend to get more kills down the hole than the jills.
  20. I was wondering where the thread had gone that was pinned at the top for ferrets to be sold and given away. Its getting to that time of year again so if the thread in question has been taken off this section would it be a good idea to start it off again? By the way, I am after a small working hob that is at least a year old(preferably a bit older) and I am in the Middlesbrough area in the north east, I also travel to York regular. If anyone has one for sale could you please PM me. I also have 2 working polecat jills (mother and daughter) to swap for a small hob if intrested. Thanks
  21. We will be doing more shooting through the summer than ferreting but will still do some summer ferreting as well. If you have plenty of land to go at where you wont kill your sport for next year and you can put up with missing a few holes due to the ground cover, plenty of kills down the holes and getting stung by nettles as well as fighting your way through brambles then there is no reason why you cant ferret all year round. We have a few permissions this year with sets in open fields so they will be getting done during the summer months, no brambles or nettles. We had about 8 pregnant one
  22. Thanks for the replies, everything seems to be fine so no need for the manual hubs. The power steering still seems to be making a noise but only when I am going slow, I will have to let someone have a look at the belt to see if it can be tightend up
  23. Keep checking the classifieds on the forums and the 'bay'. I got the mk 3 locator and 4 collars for £220. Give it a few more weeks when the season is over and prices will probably be lower.
  24. At least we had time to fit the cd player, fix the wipers and the fog lamp on my car when we got home, the day wasn't totally wasted. And it was nice to have a fresh sunday dinner, not a warmed up one like last week because we got the car stuck in a field!!!
  25. Thanks for the reply. So basicaly I change everything while it is stopped and then move forward slowly apart from taking it out of 4 wheel drive(to put back into 2 wheel drive I press the button and reverse back a few yards first). Do I have to put it in 4h before i can put it in 4L or can I go from 2h to 4L. Thanks again.
