Well said that man!! Though i have to say, when dealing with many of the people in high roles in some "conservation bodies" they do not know alot about the subject when compared to real countrymen. In every encounter i have come away disapointed at their general lack of knowledge and wonder how they can make informed decisions when they themselves are not experienced in many matters........JD No comment.

Linklater makes another good point in his article. Why are "conservationists" and "hunters" always going eyeball to eyeball? We have a lot in common (Boo Hiss Get Off The Stage Ric). I don't mean the soft hearted soft headed honey buggers, but people who have a sincere interest in maintaining biodiversity, and actually know a bit about what it takes, should surely be prepared to work together? We don't want to wipe out any species do we? (Apart from mink, greys and antis.) We could continue our sport while benefitting the countryside far more than those morons who release urban foxes in rural

Thanks for that Skelly. Linklater mentioned the Otterburn trial but I had gone on for long enough! Could there be an epidemic of common sense on the way? Dream on I guess but we can but hope. Ric

I read an article in today's Times with the above title. The author, Magnus Linklater, describes how the last breeding pair of curlews have recently reached the marshes near his land. There used to be flocks of them, and lapwings. As he says, just another species in decline? He then says well no. 30 miles away, in Angus, there is a different story. There are more waders than seen for many years. Lapwing and golden plover are at their highest numbers for years. Why? Because around Angus, landowners have embarked on a program to develop the grouse moors. They are trapping carrion crows, shooting

6.5 divided by 25.4 = 0.2559055. Calibre is measured in three ways. 1.) Internal diameter of the barrel across the lands. This is the usual measurement in Europe. 2.) Internal diameter of the barrel across the grooves. This is the usual measurement in the USA. 3.) External diameter of the bullet. This is increasingly used. ".308" is the same calibre as 7.62, .30 and more. British .303 is now defined as .311. Anyway, what da flik. 6.5, .264, .260 are all the same. Ric

Fair comments all. I was thinking more in terms of experienced guys "If I'd known then what I know now." It's called picking people's minds! Ric

If you are field shooting then buy the gun you like the look or feel of. It's only if you are really concerned about down range accuracy that twist rate starts to matter. Then try all the factory rounds you can lay hands on, see which works best, and use that as base for handloads. ATB Ric

If the rifling completes one turn in, say, 10", that is described in British or American terms as "1-in 10". It defines the rate of turn of the bullet in the barrel. Most sporting rifles use a twist rate of around "1-in 12". Basically, the twist rate affects how fast the bullet is spinning whan it leaves the barrel. A longer round requires a faster spin in flight to maintain ballistic stability, but a twist rate that is too high can cause lighter, ie shorter, bullets to break up in flight due to excessive centrifugal force. Long range target rifles tend to fire long heavy bullets which need th

Lass, I can live with that. It works, don't fix it. Ric

Quite some time back I started a thread on "What calibre would you have if you could only have one". Now I'm asking the opposite question. If you were limited by your budget, as we all are, to a small number of guns, what would you go for? You are allowed to start from scratch with your choices, but not to go berserk. If you are on a sensible budget to buy your guns, what would you have? I would have an Anschutz .22lr with a 20" barrel for UKBR22, and a SYSS semi for field use. Then a purpose built .204 which would be a "sniper" rifle for long range fox and pest birds. As a stalking gun I

Err, sorry gentlemen but if push comes to shove WHO GIVES A f**k? Get a life children. This thread started out interesting and has now disappeared up its own anal orifice. Ric

That confirms something I've noticed before. You were born in October and prefer GMT. I was born in June and prefer BST. I find this is the case for most people. Ric
-
There is a proposal to move to BST in winter and BST + 1hr in summer. Dark mornings, long light evenings. It's an administrative change so it could go through whatever the election result. Any opinions? I'm guessing the Scots will hate it but night hunters will like it. RicW

I have just read in the on-line Independent that the CA is calling hunting supporters to help with leafletting and canvassing in marginals to ensure a Tory majority. I don't want the Tories to win but I am drawing your attention in the name of democracy. Google Independent, click on Independent Newspaper. It's front page. Ric

"Mediocracy" is a great coinage. There is no such word of course but if there were it would mean "rule by the media". Pretty much what we have! Try mediocrity. Ric

The people or the raccoons? Ric

Cameron has promised a free vote IF the Tories get a clear majority. So Labour and Lib-Dems vote against repeal, Tory MPs in urban constituencies get the views of their local Constituency Party, vote against, and guess what? The ban stays. Dream on people, dream on. They haven't won yet and if they do so flicking what? Ric

How are the Wild Boar your part of the world??? Boaring. At least until I can afford a 6.5x55. Then it will be a question of duck or grouse. Don't snipe at me or you will get my goat. I could rabbit on for hours, but I am going to hare off down the pub, my deer. Ric

sick c**t Try a sense of humour transplant. Also, if you have an U-L-C-E-R bi-carbonate of soda is what you need. TCP and salt will make it worse because they send the PH balance of your skin acid. Ric

Have a look at www.pestgo4u/com. Sorry, can't get the link to work. Basically, what they say is that it is illegal to release any caged/trapped species which are classed as vermin. Urban foxes, for example should be humanely dispatched ASAP. They should not be released. Whether the species is native has no bearing on the legal position. Ric Edited to add, I have no personal experience with hand rearing cubs but a keeper (!) I knew told me that dog cubs usually turn nasty at about 12 months old, but vixens can stay fairly docile, although as said above they are very much one man, er, er

I've been doing some research. It is illegal to release vermin into the wild. Foxes are classed as vermin. So if you keep your cub you are stuck with it for its lifespan. Hand reared foxes can live up to 3 years. Ric
