  1. i've went over ground thats been 'lamped' before it's proper dark and the guys wonder why the bunnies are tight to hedges and close to buries........let them all go out at 9 and when they're all cozy and tucked up in bed the big boys can go out to play
  2. vin's got it right for me, my dog doesn't have a 'stop valve' and it's up to me to say enough is enough......is that one extra bunny worth it ?
  3. well done good luck wee man...be first take it to him
  4. plaid is something else up here, with all respect i think you meant played
  5. plenty about the tay and montrose basin but there'll be more to come
  6. i've came close but saw the signs, it's easy enough to do especially early season when we're keen, theres loads of green rabbits and the dogs not quite match fit, like willow says its the handler who makes the decisions
  7. was he a natural retriever, any foot probs, does he take fur and feather, what's his temperament like, does he work with ferrets or terriers or nets, did you know his parents what were they like, has he done well at shows ( as we can't see or feel how he's made if someone else has liked his conformation it'll give us a clue) any more pics etc .......i know that guy's are looking for collie based studs but before anyone will commit you'll have to provide a lot more info mate
  8. i think standing directly on top of the warren with four pairs of feet shouting and going may have something to do with it.......................................im no hunter...................but i hope they dont do that for living as it was pathetic......................imo maybe more than 4 pairs of feet, what about the production crew cameraman etc surely if your trying to promote something like ferreting youd pick ideal location and conditions so things went as smooth as poss and it was seen in a good light but just thinking was it the sport he was trying to promote ? or was it ......n
  9. any more info please. what lines is he from, what weight is he, is he a proven stud etc
  10. if your into ratting try scrapyards / carbreakers had one on the banks of the clyde that was heaving with the feckers in my youth, caught lots of them with my 1st ever collie cross not wise in hindset as she went very hardmouthed but we still had some fun
  11. 2 things here......my uncle in his 's now had a tiny terrier that used to drag rabbits out of holes, i think he had to pick his bury and probably spent a bit o time digging but it can be done......and with the camp just up the road here, ask the marines what happened when they tried all their macho shit in town
  12. and scraping about barren type places for the odd bunny or two teaches loads and you'll enjoy the freedom and open land all the more when it comes along
  13. i live in a wee rural town and it's just as hard probably because a higher proportion of the population go hunting or shooting, i spent my teenage years in a city and managed to get bits here and there, try sports clubs they hate rabbits, local industrial estate ? the backlots of factories often have a warren or two, if you have insurance why not approach the council they have to pay to get rid of rabbits, a wee ad in pet shops or a garden centre at the posh end of town can often get ferreting jobs in big swankie gardens, as for stock breaking work to get obedience spot on and take advantage o
  14. a big fast dog can learn to run slower with its quarry, a big dog with heart or fight will always be better than a wee dog with heart and fight, if i were setting out to breed for the job probably bull / grey x deerhound or saluki / grey
  15. but he wants to move up here wi us
  16. kinda awkward age for finding green bunnies this year, although every dog is different and mature physically and mentally at various ages i'm one of the cautious kind having seen a few spoiled pups entered too early, one of mines was a similar age last year and i gave her a few nights after the new year, just a run or two trying to get a wee bit of early success, i upped her workrate as the young bunnies hit the ground in the springtime, in my experience if you can find an outbreak of mixy in the next few months your pup will get bags of experience and confidence in a relatively short time
  17. they look ace mate, is it the pic or me ........are the blue ones bigger than the rest
  18. It's that same old mantra, more than likely originating from a book I think the terrier cross have limitations when rabbiting also, and I have seen a few in the field. Personally I would not be to concerned with the breeding specifics as a priority and go for two dogs doing the business However a medium sized strong pastoral based lurcher would be more to my taste. Me too It's that same old mantra, more than likely originating from a book I think the terrier cross have limitations when rabbiting also, and I have seen a few in the field. 19. up here it's best to wait till we've had a frost......keeps the crabs away from your bait
  20. i had a non ped years ago 32lb of fire and muscle took lots of rabbits and single handed daytime hares (pre ban mods) would bite me at the racing yet she played with our next door nieghbours pet rabbit as gentle as a lamb, my question for original poster would his dogs have recognised the scent of these 'pet' foxes when out hunting ?

  22. we had a ridgeback when we lived in africa so this is nothing against them but...isn't the ridge a type of spinal deformity ? not something i'd like to rear its ugly head in a line of lurchers a generation or two down the road
