I have just found a book called ''confessions of a poacher'' its available through Amazon but i will keep looking , thanks very much for the advice i have just ordered a book called ferrets & ferreting from Reads , its only a fiver & no p&p so i cant wait for it to arrive, so thanks very much for the reads info , i have added it to my favourites

I would like to find out what it was like to keep ferrets a hundred yrs ago, what was fed, did keepers also keep hobs , what the average life expectency was of a ferret in those days, that sort of stuff, so if any one nows of a book i could get hold off, a sort of diary if you like or a link to a site ,like an old gamekeepers or poachers diary that would be great. I have had a look on the net but cant really find much, i would like to see how they were kept compared to todays modern ferrets Thanks very much

The only way you will find out whats causing the problem is to take the dog to a vet, you cant expect people to be able to diagnosis & give out treatment advice -
can i cross post his details to a couple of ferret sites there are members in the areas who may not know about him

I totally agree, there is enough good material out there books & some good sites who will put most people right, i do agree with DS on not getting American books on ferrets though, there way of keeping ferrets is nothing like it is here, i mean they neuter them & de sent them at around 5 weeks old, at least Marshallls ferret farm do I dont think you can go wrong feeding rabbit Etc

Thanks Coneytrapper i was going to mention waardenburg's but i wasnt sure if it applied to silvers , i did hae a look on a site last night as i thought it only affected ferrets with white patches like the ferrets we see with the marbled markings on them , but i am gald you brought it up & i believe its linked to deafness like lots of other animals who are predoninantly white I think this answers my question Waardenburg's Syndrome Ferrets with a white stripe on their face or a fully white head, primarily blazes, badgers, and pandas, almost certainly carry a congenital defect

Let the vet see the dog then you know what your up against & what treatment to give

I woudnt breed silver to silver or to a black eyed white which i think is basically the same.

If you do use dry cat kibble use a good quaility oneas the cheapo ones are soya protein & its no good, it needs to be meat protein , its more expencive than ferret complete so if you can get that use that or any other ferret specific food, there are loads on the market

He dont look relaxed to me one little bit in the main photo or the smaller one, its not natural to keep a wild animal like that in the bloody house People who think they can make wild animals tame make me puke

So are you saying its the dogs make up rather than the way its trained once its in its new home that can make it attack, sorry if its a silly question but i am clueless when it comes to this type of thing & would like to understand if its nature or nurture so to speak But what ever anyone thinks its a tragic case, poor little lass

I had the same happen here some yrs ago , the bugger helped himself to half a side of beef from out of the kitchen he also managed to get on the work top & devour a huge box of after eights i had to get him to the vets on boxing day as he had vomited the most vile mess all over the house, there were piles of it every where He was feeling very sorry for himself for a few days but i had to watch him like a hawk with anythink edable

ferrets are also prone to drops in blood sugar & clinical signs are listless and or total collapse , i am told if its a regular occurance honey is wiped on there gum to try to get the sugar levels back to a decent level It does make scarey reading when you read about someones dog who has suffered it

I agree 100% with the under feeding of ferret to keep them from developing properly, i took 2 kits from a breeder who said they were small cause of the breeding, i was quite sickened by the way they ate, the poor things had been half starved & in a week they doubled there size but sadly it took months for them to realise my fingers were not on the menu They came good in the end and were of average size s i agree the bulk of tiny ferrets are basicaly tiny cause of there diet

Ferretlove can you tell me why eggs and milk are a no-no....i give mine eggs now and again and they love them. Why are eggs 'crap' ? I'm just curious because i've always given an odd egg as do most other lads i know. I didnt say eggs are crap, i should have worded it better milk goes through them so i choose to not let them have it, i dont shoot so i cant get birds , i do feed rabbit & chicken & very occasionally chicks, they have access to dry food 24/7 & water. What i ment by crap was the ridiculas amount of rubbish being sold on E bay suppliments & such stuff w

My ferrets get nothing other than what they are supposed to eat , no milk no eggs no crap

I think if people have tried every avenue without any success , naming & shaming is the next best thing

When i had a vasectomised hob i found him invaluable, luckly he was able to stay with the jills all yr long as he didnt bother them only when they needed bringing out of season. I also noticed the jills didnt have phantom pregnancys after being in with him either, so i would go for it personally
