  1. That's pathetic! I can't see how anybody could consider anything less than 15-20 years for what he did. Minimum of 5 1/2 is a joke!
  2. Outside, but they are allowed in. My preference is out as it saves mess, is less hassle and sometimes I just want the dogs to f**k off and let me chill. It's good to get away from them and relax. One drawback to keeping them out is thieves...... Something that is always niggling at me.
  3. There's degrees and there's degrees......
  4. The right type of pastoral dog, something biddable and trainable but hard and a bit wild, fearless with any stock or intruders. The right sort of good old fashioned farm collie would be a good place to start looking, but any pastoral dog fitting the description could be considered.
  5. I'm not suggesting it is now legal to pull out ya long range stag rifle and sniper the little feckers as they flee, lol. But there are plenty of stalkers etc who only own a rifle, would the laws common sense still apply to them when the outcome is likely to be more than an ounce of bird shot in the offenders gut and a bandage at A&E? Or what if the burgler came at you up the stairs and you killed him with your shotgun? Would the law's common sense aproach still be taken if it resulted in a death. That's the only reason I mentioned a rifle (more chance of lethal result).
  6. That's a good point but also what would have been the outcome had the burgler been killed and not just wounded under exactly the same circumstances? Suppose for instance a .308 was reached for as opposed to a shotgun with bird shot...... again under exactly the same circumstances, which in this case were deemed legal but had their been a death would it still?
  7. That's excellent news. A judge in touch with reality and not affraid of pissing off the soft liberals! No bullshit, just common sense......... don't break into someones home with foul intentions and not expect them to shoot you. Scum!
  8. but i think there will for the foseable future be a need for specialized front line troops trident doesent have eyes Proffessional soldiers play a different role to the Vangaurd/Trident force. Trident is purely a deterent, they can opporate with no outside instruction or assistance from the rest of the military and if ever needed, that would likely be the case. You don't need eyes on the ground to know where Russia, China, North Korea or Iran is! If our Nuclear arsenal was ever needed, chances are the rest of the Military would be pretty redundant....
  9. Of course not but lets not missread socks' orginal point. He was told anybody on the street could soldier, fact is that's bollocks the way things are with the modern British Armed Forces. It may well of been true 70 years ago but not in todays Britain. Soldiers these days are expected to opporate with top levels of technology and quality is valued over quantity, thank god.
  10. I'm really not sure but I think 8 min mile is the time required for an infantry soldier. Socks will know better? But most reasonably active folks could run that with no specific training. You can't really compare fitness to brains. Officers are certainly expected to be very switched on mentally.
  11. Not bad for a gift eh! I reckon it'll make a handy deer knife. Too smart for rabbits that's what them Moira plastic things are for!
  12. Well, I tried IanB with exactly the same request........ No reply........ I don't mind going else where but thought I would show a bit of loyalty to the site and save a tenner.
  13. So you do actually catch rabbits as well as just photographing their fast departing scuts? Good night for the youngster? It'd be a good night round here!
  14. That would be my preference. Something that is a handy beating/rough shooting dog as well as able to bush cover for anything from rat/squirrel to fox or roe. Steady when ferreting but will have venom when faced with hard quarry. I would also want a hard coarse terriers coat over the fury "bur magnet" spaniel coat. I would bring it on as a gundog and give it freedom to hunt on once the obedience was there. A bad spaniel (and I imagine the cross) is a f*****g nightmare.
  15. A wise man learns from the mistakes of others, a fool has to make them himself.... Dog and bitch yeah, same sex or terrier and lurcher no f*****g way. At the very least give them all there own beds.
  16. One, waiting for a pup out of my mates bitch. But tbh I'm in no great rush, I've bearly got enough work for this dog. I think two is plenty for most, hopefully each having different strengths but equally able to do a few different jobs.
  17. I find a terrier a little steadier when hunting, finds it easier to work rabbit in bramble but then will not be quite so strong hunting all day in heavy ditches etc. A spaniel should have enough bottle for rats, sqiurrels etc but if bushing fox is your game then I would want terrier blood in there to give it that hard drive on them. I've never seen a spaniel tangle with a fox so would just be a bit unsure how keen they would be after getting hit by one? Plenty of dogs show hunting drive before they realise that a fox bites hard.
  18. Off topic but this was interesting, Bite Force Quotient; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bite_force_quotient Pound for pound bite forces.
  19. For what it's worth I agree with you, spaniel terrier would be my preference. But do you not think the collie would make for a slightly less mad hunter? I think they would ultimately be as usefull as each other but I can see how a collie terrier would suit a different person to a spaniel terrier.
  20. The animal right fraternity hit a lot of different groups, hunters, shooters, fishermen, farmers, pharmaceuticals..... the list goes on. If we ALL united it's a war that would last a few weeks with 100% victory. It's never going to happen but collectively we hold a lot of weight.
  21. Personally I would go Springer x Fell. But tbh I think any terrier, collie or spaniel mix would suit, as long as the parents are of the right stuff. Collies aren't quite as mad when hunting as a spaniel but don't lack much in nose or drive either. Just gonna have to chance it reddawn..... When my terrier gets on a bit I'm going down a similar route. Make for a stronger animal on heavier ground and add a bit of nose. I wouldn't be keen on much if any hound blood because for bushing, beating and ferreting etc a terrier or spaniels nose is enough. And to get another straight terrier would be
  22. Funny you should say, I have noticed the same. Last year was really quiet with the rats. In a month or two I expect they will be well established around the pens and feeders, get to have to fun with the terriers then! Not great numbers of fox about really.
