  1. My mate who is clued up about all this stuff told me about it, he's watched the last frontier and said it's good too but not as much hunting/trapping as Yukon Men. I've been watching it with XBMC.
  2. Anybody else watched season 1? Follows the village of Tanana in the Yukon. Proper subsistence survival living! It follows a few familys through the year, fur trapping for their income, hunting for meat, fishing for winter food and their dogs feed, collecting drift wood and more. They hunt black bear, grizzly, wolf, lynx, wolverine, beaver etc etc! Even shows how dangerous their world is when one man doesn't make it home from the annual goose shoot and how their community deal with such a tragedy. Best series I have watched in a long time but i don't think it's shown in the UK. Probably
  3. A liner is often considered necessary with a log burner (even when using a chimney from an pre existing open fire) because modern log burners are something like 90% efficient where as an open fire is something like 20% efficient. So, with an open fire % of the heat is in the smoke and so the smoke and gasses leave the chimney very quickly through convection. Obviously the efficiency of a modern burner means the smoke and gasses going up the chimney are a lot cooler and in such a relitively large space they can and do condense before leaving the chimney. This can cause a build of of shite in yo
  4. I would poo myself! The Exorcist shits me up and that is too similar! That's a brave girl imo. Scaring somebody that badly wont always end in screams and cowering, the wrong person may very well belt the girl in complete terror genuinely thinking she is some sort of demon!
  5. Good to hear. It sounds like you'll smash previous years then. They syndicate won't let you leave! Our main crop is a sorry sight too. Other smaller patches that were looking worse initially have been great. We rely quite heavily on natural cover, something I would personally like to improve on, but that's labour intensive and is 3-5 years before it starts to pay off.
  6. Insurance is great if you have one dog. But if you have 4 dogs or more at 10-15 quid per dog per month it's pissing money away. You're better off saving the money up yourself imo. If my dogs were any good I'd maybe consider it.
  7. It doesn't make sense to me. Not many laws do but there is usually some sort of logic behind them, albeit flawed logic. So it's aparently illegal to have a dog in your enclosed yard that bites an intruder but legal to walk outside with a kitchen knife, fearing for your property and family, and stick all 12 inches of it straight the the b*****ds ribcage?....... while fearing for your familys safety of course.
  8. I don't understand this law on gaurd dogs........... So if you have a dog that is given the run of your enclosed yard and a diddy jumps the 6ft fence and gets bit you are at risk of prosecution? What if that same dog was in an open top kennel and run and the diddy jumped in there and got a bite would you still be at risk? If not, what is the defining line between kennel and yard? Why can't your enclosed yard be classed as a kennel? And why the f**k is the onus on the law abiding home owner to keep the law breaking scum b*****d thief away from their secured dog?
  9. It won't be long untill a dog theif is killed with 'excessive force' being widely viewed as legal in defending your home.....
  10. Just about every woodcock I have ever put up was out of a set a side margin or ditch by a hedge or out of a spinney/plantation. Just good old natural cover.
  11. You're not gonna find any on here, all land differs and some places that look 'garunteed' never hold and others that you would'nt give a second look explode on the one day you gave it a try. Get out there and beat the land! Look forward to hearing about it, we don't have a great many round here, but much better numbers this year.
  12. As far as I'm aware i haven't had a dog nicked Graham.......................? Touch wood!
  13. Haha, you joke, but my terrier goes f*****g mental at the hoover, she starts baying like hell at it ripping at the corners like she's working a fox! She flys at the DVD player when it ejects a DVD too! The Robots had better worry! Malt........... I want one!
  14. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20501091 "The scientists said that to dismiss concerns of a potential robot uprising would be "dangerous"." The Uk General License 2050; Rabbit Fox Squirrel Pigeon Rat Artificial Intelligence!
  15. My point exactly. If there were such a thing I'm quite sure I would have seen one by now. Facts are fox are a joke compared to real deer. I'd hardly call them little rabbits yall call Roe a dog gone deer. I'm not sure what ya getting at here dan. A US deer dog is obviously gonna be different to a UK deer dog, just as US and UK running dogs are different, and as has already been mentioned a UK deer dog comes in a few different flavours. A dog consistently grassing daytime roe with style is in my book a deer dog, or more accurately a good roe dog. A dog dropping 200lb fallow bucks sing
  16. I think that 2.2 Diesel Evoque engine is the same LR use in their Freelander and Defender. A friend at work has a 57 plate Freelander and he reckons to get 40mpg on a run and 0-60 in 10s I think. It's a Peugeot made engine as well, so bomb proof.
  17. I got stung for £270 for an x-ray and a bandgae two weeks ago! An x-ray and a f*****g bandage! Part of the cost was anesthetic but if I had known that I would have just stayed and held the dog steady for the x-ray myself! That bill shocked me a bit! The shitter was that the only reason the toe was x-rayed was because the vet said it was 'deffinately' broken, it wasn't, it was dislocated!
  18. Here's another one for our resident SFs expert; Socks can you tell me why the UK SFs favour the American M16 family assualt rifles over the British army standard SA80? Is it not an admition of infiriority of the SA80? I was always led to believe that the H&K ammended SA80 was a world class assault rifle yet our finest don't see it fit for their work.
  19. As mentioned earlier, they were absorbed by the SRR, who seem the most secretive of all the UK SFs.......
  20. You seem to know a lot more than is publicised socks. I wasn't aware the SBS was involved with the embassy seige in the 80s. In your opinion, and I know it's a trivial question, but how does the modern day SAS/SBS compare to their US counterparts? Green Berets/Delta and the SEALs.
  21. There's deer and then there's deer. I think most dogs with a bit of pace and desire could knock a roe over or a muntjack given enough chance. But maybe I'm giving the average lurcher too much credit? How many can take daytime winter roe though and leave a completely clean carcass? Then again, how many can knock a fallow buck over and run them with commitment? I think what one man calls a deer dog another would laugh at, but that can be said about rabbit dogs etc too.
  22. First time I've heard that, I thought there was going to be a profound point at the end. haha.
  23. Wear a thick pair of wellies Scot, just in case.....
  24. I've heard bits and bobs through friends and friends of friends as ya do, but I haven't really got a clue, lol. I completely understand the purpose of the SFSG just the rest are all a bit blured over one another. Btw, I'm not second guessing our forces, just confused on the exact purposes of our various regiments and squadrons, lol.
  25. Still blurs the line between them and the SAS though doesn't it? They sound more like spooks than soldier. Is it just to take a bit of the intelligence gathering burden off of the SAS so they can concentrate more of combat operations?
