  1. As ive got older and after 45 years in the game, and now im retired I can pick my ferreting days, so now no longer ferret in the rain, which is good as it makes your hunting days more enjoyable.
  2. Should read, ARE the Best Dogmen Work Shy Dole Bums, and fit as a fiddle OAPS Make the best Dog men?
  3. I would look into more rabbiting type dogs rather than coursing strains if rabbiting is your game. i realize you cant have a dog, but they are so useful apart from marking , and catching. when netting hedges with longnets, they are good at pushing rabbits into the nets, which can stop hole hopping.
  4. http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/270118-stop-net-or-25yd-basket/ One of these would be handy, i also used to do hedges solo, with purse nets, and had to get through to other side when a rabbit hit the other side i never lost a rabbit, but as you say hard work. The best way is too have a ferreting mate, and long net either side of the hedge, stand with a dog either side and you should have a few, keep moving the nets along the hedge. Apart from being ivective, its great sport. you are a long way from me, but if you are ever down this way I can show you. Look on longnetting on
  5. im not saying one bred off pets wont work, but for me it has too be worker to worker, because ferrets usually have large Litters, those that breed on here, that work them will have a few spare, so you don't really need to use pets, and some on here have their own strains going back a few years, all worker to worker. As I said it would be different if working stock was hard to find, but on this site its not.
  6. Leeview on here makes them, i suppose he could send them over, Why don't you ask him. or is carriage very expensive to Ireland?
  7. Pity it wasn't the ferreting season, a few days watching the rabbits hit the nets, may settle her down but at 3 years she will be settled in her ways, and would be difficult My Wee Whippet X Bedlington, only gave a few yips when running through a wood, any other time she was totally silent, she did this till the day she stopped working. wasn't a scream just the odd yip.and didn't stop her catching in woods. A few yips whilst lamping i could live with that, as long as the Dog caught. Its when they yip and don't catch.
  8. KR if your ever down my way, call in and i will show you, can also show you the traditional method, nets that is, as long as its not raining.
  9. Or go onto The Working Bedlington Forum, Dogs on there that work below and also on top , different types some a bit more leggy than others. Put your post on there, im sure you will get results, and you may find what suits you, near you.
  10. How long is a piece of string, you would think they would all charge roughly about the same, but no no, It all depends where you live, I phoned up one Vet whose surgery was 5 mins in the car from my usual Vet, and they quoted me £25 more than my Vet.
  11. Feck me are you and chalkwarren the Same person ............ No im a Scotsman hes a welshman
  12. I will do it, can you put me up, at my age i need a cooked breakfast, and evening meal, meat and three veg. I only drink the finest malts, and would expect you to take me to your local three nights per week, like a bit of the Craic.
  13. Thanks all I wont panic, I will just keep to my regime, but may soak the Gain puppy with Goats milk for a couple of months.
  14. Picking up my 9wk pup in a fortnight, doing my usual feeding regime. Raw Mince, Lamb ribs, and chicken wings, and oily fish once a week plus the usual veg, Will feed two meals raw meat, and two meals Gain puppy, A Greyhound trainer has told me to give extra calcium eg Calci Plus. I do know that pups have a quick growth, and they do need Calcium, but would the Gains and lamb and chicken wing bones be enough, or would it do no harm to give more Calcium, or would it upset the balance?
  15. As the season is now over, lots of babies, and pregnant Does I usually start late September October, depends how thick the cover is. If you keep an eye on this site, there should be a few kits coming on; looking for good homes, its up to you what you prefer to work, My preference is to work two Jills and also keep a vasectomed Hob too bring them out of Season, but he also works as well.
  16. That Pup of mine is looking good, in fact they all are. Yes CR is a top man.
  17. yes, but there are lads on here from most parts of the country with good working hobs, and even some whose ferts go back a long way bred worker to worker, would it not be better to source them first. you have all Winter to source your workers.
  18. Sorry Ferrets88, yes i was rude, just putting my point across, but could have said it better. accept my apologies.
  19. never seen one work, so lot of you will know better than me, but would imagine to be a better cross for smaller fields. interesting to see what you think.
  20. seen a few dogs run the land up here, the best i saw was a bitch, about an inch bigger than a Whippe,t breeding unknown, but could she kill hares, she had stamina a plenty, and once she locked on she was stuck to them like glue.
