Frank, I know I've said it before and I don't want to sound like a broken record, but I absolutely LOVE that pup, would gladly give my right arm to have one like that. Maybe soon though, have a Greyhound x Whippet arriving Monday on the ferry, hopefully I'll have better luck with this one than the three I already have. I have a Brittany HPR that's only a HP, and won't bloody retrieve, but in fairness she's a cracking hunter. A Springer that doesn't like loud noises (such as shotguns) And a border x fell terrier thats afraid of the dark I must have been an awful bol

DS, You really should write a book, something along the lines of Pirsig's "Zen and the art of motorcycyle maintenance" How about "Brussel sprouts and the art of mink trapping" by Ditch Shitter. Guaranteed bestseller, this time next year you'll be a millionaire. I'd buy it, any chance of a signed copy? At least we know it would be entertaining anyway!

Cheers all, I've never had a lurcher and I was afarid that they might be a bit soft skinned or lack the agility and toughness of a collie or bedlington cross.

Hi all, Just got the offer of a well bred Greyhound x Whippet and have to make up my mind in the next few days as the lad that has them is in the UK and will be coming over next week and can bring it with him. I just want to know what people think of them as allround lurchers for mostly lamping, some ferreting and maybe a fox if we stumble across one (in Ireland).

DS, Stick to your guns mate, you're perfectly entitled to hold a firearms certificate once you haven't done anything to exclude you. I don't think you need to be in a gun club at all and they will just tell you that hoping you'll go away and save them some paperwork. Be persistent and try to get as much information as you can, once you know what you're talking about and call their bluff, they usually just give in. Don't be afraid to talk to your local politician and get him to fight your corner if you need it, after all, you're paying his wages.

Well done Frank Wish I was having the same luck, always being tol about places infested with rabbits and can never get more than a few on a day out. Still, better than being stuck indoors.

I'm At It Again! (At Last! THE Mink Trapping Post!)

I love it! Laughed like hell with the bag opening thing, bit like taking a piss after chopping chillies. You'll never make that mistake again. -
Totally agree about hounds being great for the job! Only one problem, they are far more stubborn on a scent that any terrier, lurcher or gundog, especially if you have more than one of them. If you get a dog fox in January a long way from home and he heads for the next county, you'll have some job trying to stop your hounds going with him. Not a bad thing if you're on a horse, but not so great if you're on foot. Trust me, been there! But I still woudn't go without them all the same, they'll find quarry that the others might never find, plus because its in their nature to bay on a

'Noose Poles' / Animal Graspers ~ How Do We Make Them?
pointer28 replied to a topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
DS I used to do a bit of pest control and always used an air rifle and still have it here beside me fully licensed and legal. My cousin is still a professional pest controller and he has was also and uses one on a regular basis. Whatever you do, do not ask the Gardai about licensing laws, 99% of them haven't a clue and they will tell you it's illegal rather than bother finding out for you. You would be far better contacting the NARGC (National Association of Regional Game Councils) who are doing a great job in fighting these cases for honest, law abiding people who are at the mer -
I had a Dobermann that took my mobile phone and chewed it into pieces, and this was 8 - 10 years ago when mobiles were bloody expensive.

I would see no problem in letting the dog play a bit at his intended job ie letting him mooch about in cover or retrieving a few birds or dummies. But I wouldn't do anything serious with him, just let him be a puppy and grow up to love the game rather than rush him and ruin him.

Did you ever hear the phrase "fit as a butchers dog"? Nuff said. We have a pack of beagles, and they are fed entirely on carcasses from the local hunt fallen stock service, and they look fantastic on it.

Same where I am, i'm sitting here listening to my roof creak, and the dog's hiding under the sofa. Probably the safest place to be.

There used to be ads in the shooting times, some company used to making training videos/DVD's and i think they also did films of the various chapionships. http://www.sporting-scene.com/ They have lots of training videos by Ian Openshaw, Martin Deeley and Edward Martin. I have an old Ian Openshaw video and its quiet good but I can't comment on the rest.

Absolutely super little dog Frank I can't believe how strong and well she looks, most whippets I've seen have been cowering, weak, think skinned horrible little things that look like they'd be blown away by a strong breeze. But she looks like a proper hunting dog, and I'd say she'll put a few bunnies in the bag for you. Best of luck with her.

Hi all, I've never been into trapping before but love the snares & trapping threads, I find them highly educational and interesting, so I'm a complete novice, but eager! I've decided that I'm going to try making a see-saw trap of some sort in the near future, and I have all the plans and info that I need from previous posts, so thats sorted. My other problem is that I bought about ten feet of half inch mesh (the type you use for ferret hutches), its three feet high so I have quite a lot of it and I only need a couple of square inches for the see-saw trap. What kind of trap cou
