Thats the way it goes Frank. Win some, lose some! Unfortunately most of my hunting stories turn into a kind of comedy sketch rather than tales of big bags but once your out in the countryside and enjoying yourself, thats the main thing. Those two ferrets look fantastic, a real credit to you.

I know somebody who nearly killed his dog by giving him a horse wormer, yes, the whole thing. The really stupid thing is that horse wormers cost between 10 and 25 euros, where he could have bought a proper dog wormer for 2.50 so it's not as if he was doing it to save money. The mind boggles.

Try cribox or cribhalt, it stops horses chewing gates, railings etc. You'll get it in any equestrian store but make sure you wear gloves when applying it.

Artificial Insemination
pointer28 replied to scouse moocher's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Used to work in a sport horse stud and we do this the whole time, it means that we can export semen all over the world and it also cuts down on stress, because you don't have to travel mares and foals all over the world. Simple enough to collect the semen from a dog I'd imagine, we had to do it with some VERY nasty stallions, which could very easily kill or maim you. -
Thats a filming of a concert in Earls Court in London in 1994, it was released over ten years ago on VHS, and this is just a new DVD version with loads of extras etc. Roger Waters is nowhere to be seen on my old VHS version so I presume that he's not on the re-released version either.

I've got 4, all born 2005, 1 hob and 4 jills. The hob was OK last year but tended to skulk after he finished hunting and was very hard to catch. One of the jills was a little cracker though, seriously impressive, can't wait to get some serious rabbiting done with her this year.

A few questions that have crooped up??
pointer28 replied to dickyboy's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Hi, My border x fell is a complete wimp around the house, yelps and puts his tail between his legs if you shout at him but will get stuck into any dog that makes a move on him. He sounds like you have him well broken to your ferrets which is a good start, just be careful when a ferret pops out of the hole as he may grab them in the heat of the moment before he realises what he has done. I'm lucky enough to be surrounded by lakes and canals so I always go down to the lake with a very shallow shoreline and just walk through the water in my wellies and that gets them used to spashing -
Would love one Dale, but I'm a bit far away from you. Just working out the breeding for the laugh, you've got 3/8 Whippet, 1/8 Bedlington, 1/4 Jack Russell, 1/8 Border, 1/8 Lakeland, thats some mouthful! But if they're not an allrounder, nothing will be. If u have any suggestions regarding getting the dog to Ireland I'd definitely be interested.

I've read some of Plummers and although you could probably take a lot of it with a pinch of salt, I found them quite entertaining and interesting. As for "How to", you're probably better off just posting any questions you have on here and getting advice from numerous different people, rather than buying a book and just getting one persons opinion. Saying that, I love buying all the dog books and I learn a little bit from all of them, just don't fall into the trap of buying one book and treating it as Gospel.

Span wouldn't be that important. Obviously you wouldn't expect something the size of a Labrador to go to ground, but a dog that's a little bit big in the chest will often get into a place that smaller dogs won't simply because he wants to. It's amazing what the will to succeed can make people and animals do.

I don't see the problem in looking at anyones profile, I often check to see where they are because some people might be selling stuff and theres no point in me contacting them if they are the North end of Scotland and I'm in the middle of Ireland. I have no problem with anyone checking out my profile either, it's not like theres anything that personal on there anyway!

I've read Dig Deep, Throw Well Back and I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Read it in one day. Still love picking it up and reading single chapters now and again, strongly recommend it to anyone. The World of the Working Terrier by David Harcombe is another MUST HAVE for anyone interested in terriers, great stuff, well worth the money. Neither of these are instruction books written by so called experts. They are more a collection of stories written by two men about the sport that they so obviously love. I haven't read The Midleton Strain and I never will. I have read s

Good solid looking spade Frank. That should get the job done for you.

Hi all, I'm looking for a lurcher type dog for some ferreting, some ratting, hunting cover for foxes and occasional lamping. The dog won't ever be used for coursing hares, only rabbits and vermin. It must be small, intelligent, game and have a good coat for rough weather. I'd love to hear your opinions as I've never really had a lurcher before and would appreciate any input.

3/4 whippet 1/4 bedlington x JRT / border lakeland?
pointer28 replied to a topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I used mine for lamping rabbits and he was grand, caught a good few for us, not as fast as some crosses but he was extremely intelligent, and he came from a very game line of Lakelands so he had no fear of foxes, although he was a bit light to kill one on his own when lamping. Like I said, I thought he was a great dog, I'm looking for something similar at the moment but can't find anything suitable. I want something small and quick, but it needs to be tough, that's where the Lakeland blood was so good. -
3/4 whippet 1/4 bedlington x JRT / border lakeland?
pointer28 replied to a topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I'd keep them, I used to have a Lakeland x Whippet which was an accidental mating and he turned into one of the best dogs we ever owned. Obviously not a dog for coursing hares, but fantastic for ferreting, hunting cover and ratting, real allrounder. I'd buy one off you myself but I'm in Ireland. -
Thanks all, Think I'll experiment with both, I love making my own stuff rather than just using shop bought stuff, I get a greater sense of satisfaction when they work out well.

how do you find the border? I have a border x fell who's 18 months old and he's only starting to show any interest in hunting cover now, he still won't even sniff at a fox hole. I know they are notoriously slow starters, but I'd prefer it if he at least had a look around, even if he didn't enter. If he's going to be no good I'd rather know now so that I could give him away as a pet.

Looks like the Russell earns his keep.

Hey all, This is a great thread, I'm thinking of buying a beginners knife making kit to get me started, can anyone recommend one. Would love to hear how everyone else is getting on with theirs and see some pics also.

Hi all, New here and i am looking for some advice on how to build a simple but effective live catch rat trap that doesn't cost a fortune. Any advice would be much appreciated, and pics also if possible. Cheers

Are u sure he's castrated? Usually you just vasectomise Hobs so that they can still cover the Jills and put them out of season, so they can obviously get erections. I had one Hob cover my Jills after he had the operation, I guess the stitches didn't hurt that much :11:

Don't know what it is but I'm glad it's not mine
