  1. I've been roped into doing ferret racing for my local village gala this Saturday. Nearly finished making two 'race tracks'... not very pretty, but I think it'll be ok. There's no money in it, (I assume any money raised is going to a new church roof/kids playground or something) but I could pay your petrol costs, would be great to get another ferret or two along ~ even if just for a couple of hours? I have three jills, but I have a feeling that folk might get bored as one is pretty quick and the other two dead slow, when ever I put them in tunnels. Its a little village near Striling/Allo
  2. Working, walking dog and ferretting. But also love cooking and getting back into gardenning. Work takes almost all of my time, but my dog is with me so its cool and more like a hobby anyway.
  3. " it is a shame about this, I just wonder WHY they aren't prosecuting for the dogs? That just doesn't make any sense." The RSPCA have their own agenda. Its a charity, they make their own rules and regulate them as they see fit. Personally I would do away with the lot of them and have a Government run organisation. I have had quite a lot of experience with them. I've worked in their kennels, been questioned about my animals' welfare, reported cases to them. This was all years ago. I would have nothing to do with them now. I think they do a good job in about 10% of their work an
  4. I love all our wildlife - nothing cuter then fox cubs and baby rabbits and squirrels playing their games of chase up and down tree trunks. I was brought up in a bunny hugger home, and have a degree in wildlife biology. I'd still have killed it. Being a baby pest makes no difference at all. The only exception would be if that one wasn't a pest - eg. if you wanted one for a pet or something. Add to that the fact that it didn't run away and as already said, it'll probably, died of exposure/starvation, been run over or eaten by something anyway. The only argument I'd take for leaving it be
  5. 7 is great. I'll be out over the weekend (if I ever leave work ) as my boyfirend has had a load of gorse hacked back for me. ~ I was complaining about all the burrows it was covering a few months back. He's so sweet. I'd be very happy with 7 dead bunnies by Tuesday.
  6. My mum ran over my jack russel doing this :-( But I have my dog do it on private farm tracks - I like to keep him a good 30m behind - at about 20-25mph. Have been thinging about getting a straight rod with a short lead, or something so I can keep him next to my window- anyone any ideas?
  7. I had a big rat cage, and scrounged an old, solid wood cabinet with drawers and shelves inside. I cut holes through the different shelves and levels and then had a pipe to link to the rat cage. They loved it through the winter as was really cosy. I got another big rat cage off freecycle and joined this on too. Theres a bit of chewing on one side so there're just in the cages now, and the cabinet will need patching up before next winter, figured I'd put wire mesh around it too. But my set up is inside a barn, so doesn't have to face the elements.
  8. I'm 25. Got ferrets a year ago and air riffle at Christmas.
  9. My cage has like a raises plastic shelf and I put the rabbits on this and then tie their back legs through the bars of the cage so they can't drag it through the sawdust. I'm always suprised how much they eat - especially of the baby rabbits: they eat the skull and spine and claws and everything excepy a scrap of fur!

    Rent

My advise is to go farm door knocking. You get to tell them all about your hardships and mission in life and often a cheap rent for you and a rely niffty plaCE TO LIVE ( 8TH TIME LUCKY!) SORRY ITS IN CAPS (
  11. Sorry for the stupid post I put here last night, to anyone who read it. I was drunk and didn't mean to rant. Sorry.
  12. My ferets don't like they're swimming pool Its just a cst litter tray (clean!) but they seem to hate water ...bitterly disappointed ...
  13. Whay are pictures of courts frowned upon? don't understand... I'm missing something..?
  14. My three jills have food every day. A whole rabbit lasts more then one day, so I tend to replace after 2 days. Small rabbits/pigeons = one a day. If they've really gone to town by the evening and there's just a bit of skin or feathers left, they get a 2nd. If there's any left the next morning, they don't get fed till the following evening. Normally by Wednesday I've run of whatever I killed at the weekend, so use dried food to tide them over, only a little handfull in the morning and a wee bit more in the evening. I also like them to eat before I work them, so sometimes an egg too.
  15. I still have 90 pints to get through from last season! ~ But I won't give you advice as we did our sums wrong and now its more like apple wine or sherry... 90pints! When I was a kid, we used to mash up the apples in a tub with a fence post, and then had a proper apple press (like a small barrel with holes in it and a plate on top that could be screwed down to squeeze all the juice out of the pulp.) Last year, with no such press, we smashed the apples and filled 3 dustbins with the pulp. Topped up with water, added a wee bit of yeast and left in a boiler room for a week, to get a
  16. QUOTE (stubby @ May 7 2009, 07:52 PM) confussing as most farmers I know use salt blocks with their livestock, I too have small animal salt blocks hanging in the court, which Is used, and never had a fert die on me Salt licks are made up of minerals and salts, things like zinc and phosphorus (ie. not only the Sodium Chloride that we put on our food.) I don't know about how salt effects ferret health, but it gets a lot of bad press. Salts are essential componants of mammalian diets (not sure about other animal groups, but think vital for most life, plants, etc.). This is why electrolytes
  17. maybe something like soaked chick crumb? You should be able to find something on Google I'd have thought?
  18. My boyfriend receives a variety of Gentlemen’s' periodicals (Viz and tractor mags!) but I have yet to enjoy such manly literature. I’ve only seen one copy of Countryman’s Weekly, but have to agree with the general majority on here that it was rather disappointing. Are there any other hunting/country orientated magazines anyone could recommend? Perhaps covering the sorts of topics on here? (I am assuming EDRD does only cover dogs?) I'm into ferrets, and have an air riffle, but would like to know more about many things, shooting/dogs/shows/fishing/etc. Anyon
  19. Mine get ferrel pigeons whenever I get out shooting. I wouldn't want to eat them myself, but there's probably no reason not to; I've seen them opened up, and they're mostly feeding on spilt grain, shoots, and oilseed rape seed and other stored foodstuffs ~ things that will end up on supermarket shelves in some form, eventually! By the next morning there's just feathers left, and the ferrets choose pigeon over dryed food thats also in the cage, so it can't be that bad for them.
  20. Friend killed her cat by using dog frontline spot on it.
  21. Hi irish lassie, I think its a female St. Mark's fly. Kay had a photo of one a few days ago, but think hers was male. Its in the midge family, and there two other species that are similar, but from the front legs, looks like a St. Mark's. steph

    Swine Flu

And how much is it going to cost to produce, print and distribute a 'Swine Flu' information leaflet to every household in Britain?!?! This is not cheap!
