  5. This is the topic that ended up becoming the 'Solway Thread' http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=45969
  6. John I think that if the birds can get underneath the trap and see/interact with the call bird you might struggle to make a catch. If the bottom is solid though you'll probably be OK. If you're purpose making a structure though I would make one post 'outside' the square and leave it significantly higher - that way you'll create an ideal sitting post.
  7. I've managed to get hold of some of the specialist clip pliers that you use to join mesh to make cages. I've got a few 'kits' for sale - a pair of pliers plus 200 clips for £29 all in. PM me if you're interested. John
  8. Well howdy Lodgekeeper - I'm glad you liked the plans. I have to confess I'm trying to catch a new call bird using eggs too at the moment with a similar lack of success. This in comparison with Woodga catching one almost immediately using a rabbit as bait. I am now fairly convinced that baits need to be seasonal; eggs and nest are OK in the springtime when birds are naturally nesting By this time of year it needs to be carrion - lots of young rabbits and other animals born in the year will be dieing off so that is what they'll be used to feeding on. Unfortunately in the spot I'm
  9. I might be having a couple of days down in Devon next week - nothing certain yet but I keep promising the kids I'll take them out on a Mackeral boat. Anyone know if there's much about ? don't want to waste my time and money
  10. This might help http://www.wiremesh.net/wiregauge.htm
  11. Really ? Go on then, I'm intrigued. I can't think of another type off hand. Can you tell us a bit more about the type you're after ? JB
  12. Have a look at Richie's post too if you want to see how the work. http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=53942 Oh and nice going Nealy - that looks very effective
  13. I can do you one of these but to be honest it would be a pain. http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...st&p=503197 These are on ebay but I've no idea what they are like http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trk...ian+rabbit+trap
  14. I do not believe you could legally keep one as a pet. However a small stock of call birds, to be used in rotation, could in my view be kept quite legally in a suitably sized aviary.
  15. I think it's just a split peg arrangement - bit like a Larsen. May be hinged at the ends
  16. Well done Stubby - about time too And very well done for getting them out of the wet - does show the need for regular checks as you were doing. They will be fine as call birds but personally I would keep the smaller one. My experience is that they are more effective somehow. As for pets ? I don't think it's legal to make any wild bird captive as a pet, although, as in the case of call birds, the law make some exceptions for specific purposes.
  17. I think those are really great. well done

  19. FFS people - leave you alone for five minutes and off you all go again. Can I remind you that us this primarily a Hunting site. There are lots of politics forums about on the internet I am quite sure so if you want to discuss racial integration, local politics and the rights of the individual go and do it there. I deleted the thread both times not because I don't agree any particular point of view and not because I am cowtowing to any social pressure. I deleted it because is the same bloody rubbish we have been round time and time again, that serves no value on this site and at wo
  20. Thanks very much to all those who've bought a copy - now lets see some of you making some traps ! There are plenty of copies left if anyone else is interested.
  21. I have now managed to successfully import a batch of Speed Dip from the US - but it's all been taken already. With a bit of luck there should be some interesting posts on here in the next week or so showing what the results look like. I am going to get some more and am willing to make it available to UK members on here. However it's a bit of a pain with import, customs and everything else and is a fair financial outlay so I am only prepared to supply it on a preorder and prepaid basis. I will supply a 1 quart tin of black speed dip for £19 plus £5 postage & packing. If you live c
