  1. I'd be inclined to agree with you ZZW but I'd be interested to see what reason was given in the magazine.
  2. Can anyone find the relevant issues of the magazines ?
  3. This came up inside another topic but it's interesting in it's own right. Matt - can you expand a bit more on the thinking behind your post ?
  4. http://environment.uk.msn.com/news/headlin...umentid=8375582 I'll avoid the obvious jokes, but this looked interesting Beaver set for comebackBeaver set for comeback pa.press.net The European beaver is to be reintroduced to the wild in the UK, Scottish environment minister Mike Russell has announced. He has given the go-ahead for up to four beaver families to be released in Knapdale, Argyll, on a trial basis in spring 2009. The beaver was hunted to extinction in this country in the 16th century for its fur. Mr Russell said: "I am delighted that this wonderful species
  5. I have just gone through the video clip that you posted and made a bit of a tally. The word Weapon was used 17 times Firearm was used 14 times Gun was used 9 times What was interesting was that the news team and the Firearms association guy were most of the 'Firearms'. Conlon always used 'weapon' but what swung it was that so did the lawyer - although otherwise his input was fairly balanced I thought.
  6. I was thinking of a 'Thickening of idiots'
  7. Blimey FR - what's upset you ? You're quite right that you can download all sorts of plans and in fact there are lots on here already. You'll notice that I've not gone round hiding any of that or deleting my own previous contributions either. The fact is that most of the plans that are available are fairly high level - diagrams, general measurements etc but if you've got skills as a chippy then quite buildable. What I've tried to do is take it a level further and give people step by step instructions along with cutting lists and stage by stage diagrams. Some of these traps I've ne
  8. Miss P Your options on rabbits are many and varied - this DEFRA leaflet gives a good basic overview of your options once you get to about page 7. Interestingly though it doesn't mention the use of dogs which is still legal. Rabbits are an exempt species under the Hunting Act but you need to be very careful that you don't get mixed up with any hares by accident. Trapping options include several types of spring trap as well as live catch cage traps and permantent drop boxes. Snaring is also still a legal method. You'll find lots of info on this site about those. Shooting ofcou
  9. Sounds like that's what they were doing in Galway
  10. Well I have learnt something - what's wrong with Galway tap water then ?
  11. Have a look here too http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=38494
  12. Reliable, helpful and enthusiastic - Richie is well worth having on your team. Cheers mate.

  13. Not anecdote DS but scientific fact, theres a book you might like to get hold of called 'The Private Life of the Rabbit' by R.M Lockley. It's a bit dry in places but details an experiment in 1965 to study the impact of myxi. The reason I mention it is that the local rabbits died out before they could get the study going so they took rabbits from a few 'clean' areas and created a brand new colony from scratch. During the following weeks and months they buggered about allowing access to new areas, removing dominant males etc. Sounds just what you're looking for .......
  14. Well the secondary evidence seems to support the hedgehog theory This little fella was scratting about this afternoon
  15. A lot of these 'poacher tales' books and DVDs love to romanticise the old ways of doing things. The truth of it is though that they're pretty much all illegal now, whether they worked or not.
  16. Beagles has asked me to let anyone know who has PMd him that his computer has packed up and he'll be back on line ASAP.
  17. Here you go - I have managed to extract some sample pages as JPEGs
  18. Well it took a bit longer that I thought, but it'sgoing through the print proof stage and should be on the shelves in a couple of weeks. You can pre-order a copy though now if you want. I put a topic up in For Sale http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...mp;#entry526079
  19. To be honest I don't know, but I did think it was hedgehog. The green bit isn't usually present on others I have found but there are pigeon nesting so the Meerihunters theory could be viable. Definately not goose though - unless they are stealth geese
  20. In case anyone has missed it ( Impossible) I have been writing a book. I've got to the point where I'm prepared to take advanced orders for it now if anyone is busting a gut to get an early copy. I'm awaiting a final printers proof and all being well I will have this on the shelf in about 2 weeks. Essentially it is a book of detailed plans covering traps of all sorts. I have made a real effort to give step by step intructions that I think almost anyone could follow. The book is 100 pages long, printed on A4 size with lots of drawings. The traps included are: Droptop Box trap Seesa
  21. These have started turning up all over the garden. I think I know what they're from but seeing as this one was presented on a slab I thought I'd see what you think.
  22. In the UK Gerjan the risks and penatlies associated with not letting one go are much more dangerous. On release most, if not all, animals will be focused on getting away not on attacking you. If you stand well back and not between the animal and it's escape route there will be no problem.
  23. It does raise an interesting possibility though. Is there an angle on rat trapping that's not been explored ? Would a correctly designed, powered and approved trap of a half barrel design be a useful addition to the toolkit ? I can quite see them being supplied with lengths of pipe of the right diameter with little housing slots cut out of them to drop your 'rat dufus' into. Sort of pipe trap affair.
  24. John I don't think there is one answer to your question. I am a mod on here which affects the way I act on this forum. It also means that I 'know' a lot of people on here. I go on other forums, sometime as me and sometime in a fairly half-arsed disguise. I am sure that people recognise me but my role is different so many of the reasons to talk don't exist on those forums. With the people I call friends we will usually acknowledge each other with a PM when we first recognise each other on another site - but after that; why have conversations all over the place ? You're more li
  25. Hi Gerjan I am not familiar with the laws in the Netherlands but snares for birds have been illegal in the UK for some time. I recommend that you check that out - but you may already have done. Another good source of old trap designs can be found in this topic http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=33388
