    The entire ethos of lurcherwork imo is sport. Pairing one dog against his worthy quarry. Double dogging removes most of the sporting element and I can't for the life of me see the appeal. Would rather shoot a fox with the rifle than double dog. That's just me though. Everyone is different. FTB

    For rabbits I usually find at least an hour of darkness helps to get them out in the field feeding and not just hugging the hedgerows. After 3ish or later they seem to be more flighty and want to head back to the burrows more readilly as they have been out all night. Foxes usually just lamp from an hour of darkness onwards and hope to bump into one. But each area is different and you will only find out by trial and error. FTB

    A good dog is worth his weight in gold. No sportsman worth his salt would part with one. If your after an earthdog rear a pup from a good litter off a line of proven workers and keep your fingers crossed. If your after a rabbiting/ratting dog say so., i am sure there will be pleanty of them about. FTB

    I have had to do it a few times. I had to do it to my first spaniel at the age of 17, who I grew up with and was not only a great wee worker but also like a friend. I cried like a wean whilst I was burying her and vowed to never get attatched to another dog Hardest thing to do, but it is the ultimate respect to give your loyal companion. Dogs are not stupid and they can tell when something is up, I.e dragging it through the door at the vets kicking and screaming. Take the auld yin out to the field, have a moment together and do the deed. You will feel 100 times better for yoursel

    Had an 'anti-type vegalesbian' student that worked for us last year. She asked me to trap mice in her kitchen and was told to go f**k herself. I eventually agreed to set a couple of traps. Two days later I had caught a shrew right by the beak aswell. She was nearly in tears and I was nearly in tears laughing. If they eat meat, eggs, milk, wear leather, fur, use cosmetics etc they dont have a leg to stand on. Daft cow. FTB

    I would say your best bet is get friendly with some keepers through lending a hand/beating/helping them lamping etc and get in from there. They may know of jobs going and a reference from a keeper is worth more than the certificate you will get from college. But I would seriously consider whether it is the career for you, at a later stage in life. You will be used to hard work through previous careers but will you want to be grafting away as hard 10 or 15 years from now? FTB

    I would think the embarrassment and shame of going to prison as an elderly gentleman beats that argument hands down. Whatever way you look at it he should not spend a minute in prison.     You can't compare breeding running dogs and humans with breeding earthdogs. It is not the same. You are comparing physical attributes with mental attributes. Breeding untried parents just “coz of the breeding” is reckless and any workers produced will be down to a much greater element of luck than if you were to breed 2 grafters. Just my opinion. Which is beside the point as he is not interested in grafting them. He wants a pet. That is a reason in itself why it should never be bred off. FTB
