    If a varnished stock takes a hard knock or scratch then it's going to need stripping and re-finishing again to keep it perfect. With an oil or wax finish is far easier to fix the odd bump or scrape. Follow Simon's advice about removing dents and if it picks up a light scratch just very gently rub it down with wire wool or very fine grade emery cloth and re apply some oil or wax to bring the finish back

    Use the heel and palm of your bare hand to massage the oil into the wood. This causes better friction that warms the grain and opens the pores of the wood to get the oil worked in. Got me all hot and bothered, that bit!!! Good advice though and as Simon's said, never laquer or varnish over an oil or wax finish, only do that on bare wood

    Springer all the way, mate, especially if it's going to be your main gun Co2 does have it's uses (I use it...) but as an all year round hunting tool it's limitations far out weigh it's advantages of being small, light, compact and very quiet with a mod fitted but the ballache that goes with it, cost of Co2 soon mounts up, general shitty quality of most of the guns, no use at all when it gets cold, unpredictable shot count etc... As has been said above, get a decent used springer, any HW, Air Arms, Diana or older UK built Webley (don't buy a Lightning, they're shite!! ) will do you ju

    It is worth stretching it out a little sometimes It's quite rarely that I'll shoot much past 40ish meters in the field but if the conditions feel right, sometimes I'll go a little further. We do practice out to some fairly long ranges, we were out today with a mate of mine (Paul, AKA theflashingblade) and the furthest targets were a measured meters, more for a challenge and a laugh as much as anything else but conditions were good and most got hit more often than not after we'd got our eyes in.     Simon, did you use a range finder in conjunction with mill dots to achieve such long distance kills? Hi, Shepp. In case Simon doesn't see your question, I can answer it. What he's done is along certain parts of the permission is to place marker stones at five meter intervals. Measured not paced out. He's a bit wick with his Hawke's Mil Dot ret Personally I can't stand the bloody thing, give me a 30-30 any time!! Cheers.
