The land between Ian's house and the quarry wouldn't be any good IMO. Too close to a main road and as you've said, there's the footpath at the base of the valley and there's also the nature reserve to consider which has public access too.
What about the land on the other side of the road, over by the beat store? Or on the other side of the village towards the old railway? He's a few fields that have been left fallow over there.
