  1. Well done to the young hob looks like he will turn into a good worker with time know what you mean about showing some newbies the ropes we had one and he was absolutly useless no energy/ bone idle/unreliable/ and generaly as thick as shit it was like talking to a brick wall he was a compleate waste of time he was very very hard work got a new newbie now and hes the compleate opposite a great bloke to be out with and learnt the ropes in no time at all all the makings of a life time ferreter
  2. we have had the same problem since the snow and hard ground arrived dig after dig we have had more hang ups in the last 2 trips out than all the rest of the season put together so far we started near the end of august the last couple of trips have been a nightmare but i do think its because the ground being so hard magnifies the sound when walking over the holes
  3. we started off well at the begining of the season with some good numbers but since the snow has arrived its dropped right off again
  4. we make all our own nets but this offer from longnetter is a BARGAIN thats where i would go if looking to buy some
  5. Have a good day mate we are hoping to get out monday and wednesday all being well
  6. keep practicing mate you will get there in the end making less and less mistakes when i first started making nets years ago the air was blue with F**KS but the more i did it soon fell into place can now make a net other than the 1st 2 rows without hardley looking at it and watching the tv good luck with it mate its a great feeling when you catch that 1st rabbit in a net you made yourself
  7. EXACTLY thats how i taught my daughter to kill rabbits it takes no power at all she can now do it with no probs she can also chin them in the net well done for asking how do it properly mate it saves any suffering to the rabbit good luck
  8. Does anyone else get this problem we were lucky enough to have been given permission on about 2000 acres of good rabbiting land to add to our permission list the place is alive with rabbits and the burries vairy from big uns and small ones in the open to the same under the hedgerows the farmer is a fantastic bloke and we can go whenever we want and drive the 4x4 to the ferreting area we intend doing that day the only prob is its a cattle farm no crops no sheep just hundreds of cattle and what we are finding because cattle are so heavy when the ground is wet and been wet in the past the ground
  9. we had a ferret come out on the other side of a road before quite a wide road as well not a little country lane couldnt beleive our eyes
  10. As albert64 says i have made absollutley 100s of nets in the years i have been ferreting and have never tied a single net to the end ring it makes no difference at all
  11. What sort of nets are you using ie size and made of what ? also were the holes you were ferreting clear of debris roots undergrowth etc as this will stop even the best of nets pursing properly
  12. At least now you have caught a couple now ferreting is very up and down somedays the rabbits will bolt easy and other days they dont want to know make sure you are as quite as you can when netting up try not to talk and be as light footed as you can on top of the holes this does greatly reduce the chance of getting hung up it doesnt stop it compleatly but does help the last 2 times we have been out have been the worse 2 trips since we started at end of august we got hardly any rabbits got hung up on every burrie got more hang ups in 2 trips than all the rest put together since august it w
  13. Good for you mate hope you get some good days sport from it
  14. The dog seemed to like the wheelbarrow anyway keeping her bum off the cold ground LOL my jack russell pup sits on my foot when we are out ferreting and its cold he hates sitting on cold ground
  15. I think we can safely say this one is a bit of a fishermans tale
  16. Same hear not over keen on the blue but all our nets are these colours in 4ft poly wouldnt use anything else now love hemp nets as well but got converted to the new coloured poly and now make all our own in this material still got about 50 odd 10z nylon ones as well but never tend to use them anymore but the choice of material and colour is endless and yours to see what you prefere but would defo recomend giving the coloured spun poly a go
  17. Try a few bolt traps they work and hold well use them on the side of the hedge or areas you cant get to quickly or on holes with bramble on them we use ours quite a bit but we are lucky enough to be able to drive the 4x4 over all our permissions bolt traps are not practical if your on foot as they are to bulky to carry but highly recomended if your driving to the burries you intend ferreting GOOD LUCK MATE
  18. So true about the shooting when we ferret and shoot the guns dont seem to make a great deal of difference and as caterpiller said if your gonna have to dig it might just as well to 3 rabbits than 1 thanks for the replies happy hunting for the rest of the season to all
  19. We went out wednesday and although not a bad bag we ended up with 11 rabbits we always try and be as quite as poss when netting up i personaly think that talking and crashing about contributes to a lot of hang ups The wind was very very strong and the rabbits seemed very reluctant to bolt have noticed this before in strong wind does anyone else notice this maybe human scent blows down the holes ? anyone got any ideas on this ?
  20. Thanks gents for the info will try and work out at what pressure on the gauge the rifle shoots best at
