ditchy, the water set your talking about has been used since i was a boy , up in the far north of scotland , using the old gin trap , its illegal now , but it was very effective ,

I am going after them for mink some of the areas I trap no foot holds. The three foot of chain is to take mink down in deep water. Make a pocket and stake the trap out in deep water on an angle with the current, the chain adds weight. I'll take some pics in the next day or so. night runner , you don,t need anything added to a fenn trap , to take a mink down , the weight of the mink caught in the trap takes it down itself , a 4 foot length of 6 ply electric fence wire tied to the trap ring , and the other end tied to a little thin peg pushed into the underside of the bank , takes them down a

shitty , you should watch and listen ,especially with your record on mink catching all mink traps should be set with drowning wires/chains , cos even tho we try ,as we all know not every animal is caught correctly and killed outright , therefore its of benefit to add this wire /chain to ensure an animal is not sitting pretty in a trap stapled to a box, i set all my mink traps with wires to allow the mink to drop into deep water wether its dead in the trap or not, i even set rat traps in the same way on stream banks just to be certain of a swift end these yanks are way ahead of us lads wh

s.g. why do you need to use such a monstrosity as a gtc. raft its like a vietnamese houseboat , far to large ,and cumbersome you would be there for a month trying to set out a mink line , my mate uses 200 rafts and can carry them in the back of his truck out in canada , and a float is not new as some people would have you believe , the americans have used them since the 1940,s my mate catches 2000 muskrats plus a number of mink on these small rafts in 3 weeks , a small length of 10 x2 plank will work as good , you never get real pro. trappers giving themselves hard work , its only the amateur -
n.r. why do you need 3 feet of cnain to kill a mink , all you need is a lentgh of wire and wrap it on the end of a stick , and push it under the bank . when the mink is caught , it pulls out and sinks with the weight of the trap anyway , ive trapped them up to 6lbs. a simple rabbit snare holds them also , all your doing is giving yourself work for nothing , a fenn trap does not kill a dog minkquickly they are not strong enough , thats why i used to use drowning wires . you don,t even need a swivel , i can see your overkill if there are coons around , and if they step on one of the traps they

your dog was caught in a fox wire , set on a kill pole , although the snare was free running , the fox wraps itself around the pole and expires quite quickly, your dog could have done the same if you hadn,t been with it , although some dogs have the sense to sit down and wait , this method is used i north america to kill snared coyotes .

micky its been a badger , they always eat in from the backside , and they are great at cleaning up fox carcases ,look what they do to the snared rabbits , sometimes you are only left with a head a skin and 4 paws i have seen this hundreds of times over the years .

a pegged rabbit snare holds a big mink , so does a fenceline snare . as long as the wire is spun firmly . my mate snared a 4 1/2 lbs. dog mink in a fence wire last week it held it no problem . a pegged wire holds large fox cubs , also.

gee whiz, i remember when the great wall of china was a wire fence , and that took some digging , i,ll just stick to the snares . -
the rabbit that looks freshly eaten all along body looks like a buzzard ate it
-
its a fox at work ive had this before , they seem to like biting the ears of the rabbits same in the snares , they also bite the mink out of the bodygrips in hard winter weather like this except they leave the ears . snareman.

SNARE QUESTION : RABBITS ON STEROIDS ?
snareman replied to richie's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
first of all your tealer is to thin and weak , shop bought snares are badly designed , half spun , and not long enough , with a wind down from the eye , they kink and snap more readily , a proper pro. rabbit snare 221/2 inches long and spun firmly is more than strong enough , to hold large winter rabbits of 6lb. it also holds hares and good big fox cubs and feral cats easily , i have had adult foxes caught and dead in them at times , but a foot snared fox just bites through them in seconds , an eight or ten strand is absolutely uneccessary i would not be bothered with them , a waste of brass w -

woodga don,t you believe it thats a roadkill that buck , he,s lost that much weight trying to get one , gw.

i think you may be right , why buy a caller when you can do it by mouth with a little practice , half of these fancyover priced american callers are more designed to catch the mugs and their hard earned money than the foxes or coyotes

they are not that tiny caught a couple in mink traps years ago , the male was bigger than any mink i have ever caught , and its winter coat , the hair was two inches long the heaviest mink ive had was 6 lbs,

Told you about that one in PM, Mr Memery Banks One I had going under that branch, down into the dry ditch. But he managed to ball up and break the wire. dithy, there is no need to leave rabbit wires hanging out mate , ive set a hundred brand new shiny wires and had rabbits next morning , its the human thieves thats the problem , and you will catch foxes no problem in a brand new undyedfox snare , except in certain conditions where you will not get them in a new wire , pm. me and i,ll tell you when you won,t be able to get them and why.snareman.

VV yes the snares are of 7/7 cables, single strand wire is not very useful for snares IMO. Thanks for the tips - do you find that the smell of the spray paint lingers at all or does it wear off pretty quick? OTCjust put snares in the sink with boiling hot water and liquid soap and rub with an old hand scrubbing brush , rinse them of and dry then spray with a can of auto paint , leave them to air out for an hour , then i fling them into a small tub of rain water for a few days , the cold water also hardens the auto paint and takes the smell away quicker , ive used them and killed foxes 3 o

by making the trap springs stronger , and increasing the the size of the trap pan , to correlate the stepping area in conjunction with the size of the kill area , brass triggers also give a smooth firing action , this helps greatly , the problem is that trap companies never seemto pay attention tothe real guys who use their products , its usually the bull////ers that are always on hand giving out the advice .
-
in my opinion having trapped hundreds of mink over the years using both fenn,s and springers , also bodygrips and kania,s , the springers were weaker than the fenns, and would often jump apart as the base springs seemed to bend and unhook themselves when they fired and i lost a few mink through this bad fault , they also only had 5 turns on the springs , on either side of the trap pan , as the fenn has 7 turns and was a far better trap , and never once did the fenn traps jump a part , neither the fenn or the springer kills a mink quickly , as i have watched on a few occasions good sized dog an
