there was a n, american trapper first made one from a cent coin , ron hanson a coyote trapper made them from washers , now the system is widely used all over n, america , ive used it here , and it works well , depending how its positioned on the cable it can be a locking snare or a relaxing snare , its been around a lot of years ,

if you snared to the instructions of an SAS manual you would starve to death , i taught one of these guys a good lot of years back how to snare properly , and he couldn,t believe the difference , as he was catching nothing , they are all taught to snare with tiny loops 4 fingers high , ive taught guys who went to the army and when the instructor started to show them how to snare rabbits they almost died laughing , anyway as moley rightly states who the hell needs a dozen snares on a pole , and the squirrels run up and down the top of it , 99 percent of these guys that write books and in mag

i did a fishery a couple seasons back for a friend of mine they had rats were coming from surrounding fields around the holding areas where thefish were kept there were good runs leading to the location , so i just snared them with the hazel benders , until all the runs went dead , caught quite a good lot , it seemed to do the trick, but all locations are not the same ,

those squirrel traps look alright ditch , at under 23 bucks , at the price you would pay over in uk the greedy bast.... , would be wanting 30 quid a throw , i don,t buy anything from field sports dealers over here , all the real tree stuff i s third of the price in canada and the states , the americans wouldn,t stand for the shit that we take when paying for equipment in rip of britain , so if we don,t buy it from them here , and send over to usa , they will have to bring their prices down, the mark up on a lamp is over fifty quid , i would not entertain them , at least dick turpin had the cou

i think you would be better making your rat snares out of two strands of brass rabbit snare wire , or thin stainless steel either one or two strands , the rats can bite through two strands of brass , but not the stainless wire ,

Making up some rabbit snares
snareman replied to Little Butch's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
go onto the hunting life and look at the rabbit snaring sections ive done in the pinned section , a snare noose needs to be 22 1/2 inches long , and a double tealer 2.5 mil fencewire 9 1/2 inches long , or a single tealer 10 1/2 inches long , why the hell do you need a fishing swivel , and all the crap , and don,t listen to people who don,t have enough experience on snaring that says you won,t catch rabbits the next day , i have made 100 brand new pegged snares one day , set them the next day , and killed rabbits the following morning , so get to it kid. -
there appears to be a lot of rats this year , ive just snared 20 with the hazel whips , and boy there were some big fellows among them , all fed on winter wheat , a few of the lads have commented about the amount of rats that are about this year ,

Excluders for springer 6 trap.
snareman replied to Sprucegoose's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
s. goose , why do you want to use springers, i tried them a number of years back on my mink line , and in my opinion they are not as good as a fenn , first of all , the fenn has 7 turns on the springs on either side of the trap pan , while the springers that i used had 5 turns on the springs , and werenot as strong or robust like the fenns , the springers base hooks were always bending and i lost a number of mink due to this weakness , as the trap came apart when fired , i had a prominant chap from a large fieldsports organization with me one morning , and he viewed this same problem first han -
i think poisoning moles with stychnine is now banned , but you better consult , some of the pest control lads likes of molecatcher, moletrapper, or moley, or proper job. as all of these lads catch moles . on a regular basis. gw.

Rabbit Snare Tealers Wire ?
snareman replied to devonlad's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
you will get it at a farmers supply , or some of the old ironmongers will order it for you , but they will probably sell it to you double the price , try the former it will be a lot cheaper , or ask a farmer , gw. -

i sure will be , ian b. is putting it up on site this week , and i know it will be of great interest to the amarican trappers also , its very very simple , and like my snares its made for practically nothing . and the beauty about everything idevise and make, it works, gw.

nuts are very strong and normal mild steel nuts do not need to be anealed , they have threads inside them these take a great grip on the wire watch and not hammer them over tight or you will damage the cable strands , sometimes they can crack and they rust ,the aluminium is good also, they can be hammered flat and hold very well , i use a ratchet crimping tool with a beak insert and this is a great tool for crimping ferrels onto wire , you need a good crimp with a thick wall , the americans sell good quality stuff you can get them here but a lot of the time they are crap , all depends where y

hi Ditch, i had two snares set & already caught 2 rats a pregnant doe & a buck a bit bigger than the one in the pic, threw them under the hedge they disappeared (fox) ? that rat was found 2' from the bender left on the ground, you can see how far up the wire was snapped and the little snap on clip was nearly straightened out but held, the only other thing hanging about is a wondering cat (not for long if i have my way) the farm dogs are penned up, i'm open to any valid opinions red dog if clip was almost straightened its been a predator of some sort , i have had rats totally eaten

one for the forward thinkers
snareman replied to mole catcher's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Cheers foxy. I didnt use them for my first season and i hated it, my hands were soooo cold it was scary. After that i used the waterproof "gardening" gloves from the poundshop. They are good at keeping hands clean but didnt do much at all for cold. Ive just got some neoprene gloves and used them yesterday for the first time. They kept my fingers warm but were too thick-it was a faff on setting the duffuses. Ive never found gloves a problem for leaving smells!?! i use gloves for all my trapping , they are the yellow rubber ones with a white cuff ,stink to high heaven at first of, er , -
i run mink lines for years , and can honestly tell you that two sticks over the front of a tunnel does not stop a big hungry otter , afew years ago one worked my line of traps on a good sized river every day . this big old dog who was in the region of 20lbs. would just go right into every trap site along that certain stretch of river and get caught by the foot in every trap eat every bait and he would do this every day , the traps did not even worry it he was so bold , so i just flung a handfull of mallard duck breastfeathers into the trap site and some fish oil . and that stopped his nonsen

sure ive used them in canada trapping mink and muskrats with my mate who is a pro. trapper and caught 2000 in three weeks , he packs 200 of these little floats on the back of his truck , not like the oversized monstrosities that they play with in our country , these floats have been used by the americans since the 1940,s so they are certainly not a new idea that everyone seems to think that they are in uk. snareman.
